It's like this. If you're buying anything ask the seller if you can have a shop. Do a pre-purchase inspection. If the seller says no. Do not purchase the vehicle. Might cost you 100 bucks. I'd rather lose 100 over thousands any day

I tell people this all the time. They never do. Some get lucky, some do not.

Most people don’t actually allow that. They are afraid someone will do something.

I thank my lucky stars I bought my 5.0 42 years ago new! No one touches my car but me and my wrenches.

Same here, got mine new 33yrs. ago..i do all the work myself, except i had new tires installed by costco. They did a awesome job..If i had access to a tire machine and a wheel balancer then i could have done it by myself.

@@Neil5.0lx Yep, tire changer also. I haven't been to a tire shop in a long time although the last set I got from LMR... gold mesh wheel set.

I also bought my 85 GT 39 years ago. It’s extremely low miles. I wouldn’t even know what it is worth. Only paid like $9500 for it.

Very good advice. A lot of times we just don't listen. When we bite the bullet we have to take the responsibility 😢.

If you're buying car over 30+ you going to have problems let alone if it's been tampered with

I second this. Almost bought a 13k original mile svo mustang last year and it was perfect..... except that it had been sitting for over 20 years in a garage. It looked great, didn't have a dank smell inside from bad seals, but knowing the car hadn't been started or driven meant that if it holds fluid or rotates, it will need to be replaced just to drive it. Sure, you can hit the key with a hot battery and fresh fuel but the rubber efi lines and coolant hoses are still going to give up. I know the guy that bought it and he's spent more than what he paid for the car(8500) just to get it dependably roadworthy. Worth it though? Hell yes.

I always take my wife. I'm usually excited and have half blinders on. She starts pointing out everything, and does it in front of the seller. Lol

No good deed goes unpunished. Best not get involved unless you're being paid to look at it.

I had a buddy sell a really clean fox at one of those classic car dealerships here recently after not having much luck selling it on FB Marketplace. He established a reasonable asking price for what he needed to get for the car to let it go and they put a 1.5x multiplier on his asking price for their posted selling price. The car sold in about a month. You are not getting any deals at those places. It will for sure be some more work to hunt what you want down, but there is a lot more potential cost saving dealing with a private individual.

Another thing to remember is that 99% of these cars as well as 3rd gen Camaros have been beat to within an inch of its life. My first car was an 84 Z28. It was a clapped shitbox when I bought it in 1997. It didn't get any better I was not nice to that car.

I was at lunch with a friend, and his friend who was an old guy car dealer that had sold cars since the 60's. He was bragging about buffing/polishing a car and rolling the odometer back to "make it like a brand new car". Glad I never bought from him. Great advice from you, Caleb, but ultimately the buyer is responsible. Caveat emptor!

I stick to private sales. Too many dealers are willing to bandaid big problems and ask premuim price. Bought my fox from a retired army Sargeant. 48k miles looking fresh as the day it was bought in 86.

I know an extremely knowlegable custom body shop and mechanic car builder.... That got the screaming purple hornies over a tri-5 that looked fantastic. When he got it home it was house screen bondo and bullshit. Lost 20k getting rid of it.

I've been working on cars for 30 years and been in small shops, chain type muffler shops and big dealerships. If you don't know cars do some homework and find a shop you can actually trust. Always I mean Always have someone else look at it before you buy it. I had my Best Friend who also has been working on cars for 30 years look at the Fox I now own as I didn't want to miss anything before I bought it. You turn into a kid in a candy store and look too fast and can miss big things. It happens.

Sux that he got screwed, but wow.....due diligence guys. Common sense should tell you that if you are not compent to thoroughly inspect the prospective vehicle, take, or hire someone who is! These dealers are not your friend. Their money is in your wallet, and they feel it is their job to get it out of your pocket. They are good at what they do!

The only person at fault is the buyer that's it. With these old foxbodies swapping so many owners you never know what's been changed.

Yeah a total screw job, someone has to look over the car for you if you don't know take it to someone who does for a pre-inspection, if they don't let you don't buy it. Last year I went to go look at a New Edge 03 GT, looks good way overpriced at this dealership that deals with older muscle cars it was about 3.5 hrs away, I knew it was overpriced but went anyway looked at with my wife owning a 02 GT that is garage kept and me being the only one working on it. So I knew the ceiling, it had less than 75K miles but looked good from a distance but underneath looked so bad, looked like it was driven in high waters most of it's life, shotty repair work, patched paint work. They wanted over 15k for I offered 8K but they didn't take my offer.
