Mort, I really like your channel. Not just because it's about gaming. But you as a person really draws me in to the channel. It's clear that you are a very caring person and your insights on collecting and just general life stuff, I relate with. Love it 👍
I really like how you focus on the psychology of collecting from a personal perspective. As a collector myself with a nearly complete NES, SNES, and a "complete" CIB N64 set (minus the Sculptor's Cut manual as well), I also felt the diminishing highs. But as I started getting sucked into the variants, including the outrageously priced "Not for Resale" variants, I started to really think to myself "What am I even doing here?" I realized I was chasing a high that was being fed for the past decade with literally 10s of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of my time. I'm in the phase of dissollusionment , so who knows what will happen. Right now, I'm focusing on enjoying what I have, which is arguably a lot...and saving money.
@@MortsGarage For sure - it’s a matter of goals. The disillusionment is from realizing I need to choose between saving for a house in northern VA ($750k and up) or continuing my collection from my condo. The wife may have something to do with it as well! 🧐
Wow, Mort! I'm really surprised by how well you were able to weave together 3 different storylines into one video. It kept me watching all the way through
The pastel title screens are giving Wes Anderson vibes. Dig it. Great video. This format is very cool and you’ve managed what I think is a very unique-to-you way of presenting it. Kudos, Mort!
We just realized our seasons of collecting are in a sort of quantum state where they are all happening at the same time. So happy for you about the manual! It’s such a milestone to reach specially given its value and meaning to you and your collection. The gift is obviously for riff and Ricky guys they are a couple of friends hehe It’s a long road for us between getting games and game related things, upgrading conditions, definitely a marathon not a sprint.
I think as I continue through collecting and vending I realize that nothing is really that rare so I am more patient. I am also willing to let things go and trust I will get a condition upgrade down the road. I always go back to the games I had growing up and finding the nicest CIB copies (my favorite way to collect) is good for me. Catch and Release. I enjoy exploring systems I didn't really get when they came out Deep diving on ps2 shooters or DS puzzle games. It really helps to have a focus character/publisher or at least a subset collection. I'm having fun going after the nicest condition complete nintendogs set.
@@SwishaMane420 it’s true - though the data on disc rot is kind of all over the place. I’ve had some stuff be broken now and other stuff that people predict will outlive me.
I feel like I'm perpetually in Stage 1, despite having many of the games from my childhood in my collection & never having sold most of them. Unfortunately for my wallet I've played a ton of games in my life as a spoiled only child who got to rent a game almost every weekend, so every so often I think of something I haven't played & want to then go to find a deal on it. Most recently it was Re-volt, but instead of getting the N64 version which I have memories of playing I grabbed the Dreamcast version as it's a newer console & presumably more rare as well (not that I really care about that). Also that's amazing about your daughter with Star Wars, reminds me of watching the original trilogy with my dad in the late 80's/early 90's all the time. I feel like my version of that with my on the way son will be Goku turning Super Saiyan. Also for a modern take on Road Rash give OnRush a try, one of my favorite racing games despite it being more about car crashes than getting first place.
I have a good sized collection, certainly nowhere near the scale of yours and others, even though it takes up a lot of space, at least it has re-sale value for your family now and in the future. People that collect or accumulate useless trinkets or fill space with other stuff don't get much for it, usually garage sale prices. I almost sold my collection because I'm starting the process of moving, and have had good offers, but I'm holding out as long as possible, hoping I can come up with a plan to not have to sell it, but at least it's there and has good value when I need money.
Great video mate! Like others have said, I appreciate your reflections on the psychology and even perhaps philosophy of game collecting. It's one of your 'points of difference' in comparison to the other YTers making similar content. You should triple down on it! Also, Super Metroid is the best game of all time!
You missed a Star Wars movie! Clone Wars was released in theaters. Sounds like a good opportunity to introduce the girls to the series! It’ll make prequel fans out of anybody.
@@MortsGarage it’s wonderfully animated as it progress in the seasons. The kinda show that grew with the intended audience. From a narrative standpoint, the series touches on some incredibly rich themes. Something a man of your taste would very much appreciate.
Loved the video pal. And congrats on approaching 30k, everyone needs to subscribe to this channel. DO IT!! Anyway, such great deals at that swap meet. And that ending lol. I'm guessing the manual is almost in your hands. Brilliant. 🙌
Bah! This was awesome! I mean all that stuff in the beginning was fun and I enjoyed it. Even saw my face on there repping The Quarry (which is a really fun game! ) But the reason to stick around until the end has me intrigued for the next video 👀
I think the term “grail” should be changed to something more like a “nostalgia bucket list” as that is more of the high we are chasing, when trying to find them. To play them and feel “that age again”.
I love you Mort and I love your channel. I know you were trying to give some love to the PS3, but both of those Lord of the rings games you pointed out for the PS3 played better on the 360 lol.
@@MortsGarage oh definitely lol. I just always think it's funny when people are talking about the top games or good memories from the PS3 and it's cross-platform games lol
I share your opinions on StarWars. Did you ever see the clone wars cgi animated seasons? If you can get past the outdated cgi they have really good stories. First few seasons are for kids, but then it gets dark in season 3 and was more for adults. Also Mandalorian was pretty good too.
I would never have guessed I would be getting life lessons and a philosophy session in todays video. I am kind of jealous at the pickin's you have, It's been slim pickin's here for games, Alot more movies, vinyls & comics though. Good luck with the manual Mort!.
great freaking video dude !!! idk why but that quick seal bit got me off guard haha that was a good laugh and cant wait for next video with the manual !!! im suuuper excited !!! and also the collecting i totally agree yes of course the games are fun but its the ppl u meet and interact that make it so much fun ! also when acquiring games some come with stories from its previous owner so in a way we are collecting memories and trading our childhoods for others childhoods get me ? haha Well yeah love the vid and MORTS GARAGE IS FREAKING RAD !!! ❤🔥
I do not collect video games, at least i cant afford to right now,lol But i do collect Comic Books and a lot of what you said about collecting goes for me with CB too. My question is when you decide to widdle down the collection and sell off things, have you ever gone back later, wished you hadnt sold them and started collecting that batch again? i'm talking about more recently and not back in the day selling off the 64 and then going back later and buying again but like now when culling the collection down.
I wondered if I would - and I’ve sold off stuff that was kind of tough to let go of, but I’ve only 1 or 2 times gone back and gotten it again. By and large, everything can go.
Just started my n64 CIB journey collection love learning new things about the n64. Also keep it up love how caring you are towards other ppl in the community
Hey Mort. Most recent comment so far. I know, I’m ALSO impressed. 🧐 But seriously loving the vids. Really liked your take on “grails” and “rare” when it’s all rare and grails no none of it is. A strange reality that people allow themselves to be manipulated by. Much love my guy 🥰👊👊 Ps. That ending was so cheesy I was giggling like an idiot 😂
@@MortsGarage aww thanks Mortimer! Not being a collector I get a very unique perspective of being on the outside and looking in. Whether it’s through RU-vid or people that I meet in person driving for Uber. I’ve also learned there is a MASSIVE difference between being a Fan of something and a Fanatic or Idolizing something/someone. It’s wild 😳
Fantastic video throughout. I never expect anything less than the very best! I’m going to claim Doom 2 on the PC as my favorite first-person shooter. My fondest memories of the game are those from 1999 when the internet was a relatively new idea and my brother was away in college. I was a senior in high school, and I recall the two of us connecting via 56k dial-up modem to co-op in Doom 2 :) I’m actually stunned by how smoothly it worked out! I could even tell when someone was trying to call the house phone because we’d experience major lag. But the experience was a treasure! There was something cathartic about busting baddies using a telephone line to span the 200 miles separating us :)
It's never enoug hahaha. I LIVE for that next amazing deal lol. I had stopped collecting before 2020, and all it took is one amazing yardsale haul in 2022 and I am always on the lookout for games and have gotten so lucky these past 2 years with amazing and quality hauls.
Darkwatch on PS2 is one of my favorite FPSs. Old west theme with supernatural enemies? Sign me up! Personally collecting becomes enough for me when I run out of shelf space. I'm also 60 years old, realistically I already have enough games to last me the rest of my natural life. Since I'm not The Highlander as far as I know, that sets a definite time limit. Ooooo put a bunch of Final Fantasy VIII stuff in that bag for the JRPG couple! I assure you it will be well received 😉
"Will Mort indeed secure the manual, or will this nefarious figure pull a dastardly trick? Just who is this mysterious character who possesses the manual? Be sure to tune in to get the answers to these questions and more, as the saga continues! Next time on Mort's Garage!"
22:35 I really enjoy Built to Win. When I was a kid and did sleep overs at my best friend’s house this was a frequent weekend rental for us. And so, when I started collecting a few years ago, I knew I had to hunt down a copy. Glad you got one, too.
I took my lunch break to watch this and the end reminded me of that scene from Family Guy where Peter is negotiating a price on a coffin for a funeral lol
Theres a super cool/weird horror game for the Wii, that exclusively released in Japan, that uses the Wii Balance Board. Other than that, the thing collects dust like I collect games.
@@MortsGarage no, thank you! Also as a kid I loved star wars, I'm gonna try and go through them all like you say as a whole, see if I can rekindle that love!
Power of the Cardigan! ✊🏼 I really hope Camerman Mike bought that helmet. It was made for that beard! 😂 Heckuva day of hunting dude. 🤙🏻 Whoa!…The dude at the end sounds suspiciously like the guy who bought that Clay Fighter Sculptors Cut manual I had back in 2005 for $5….🤔
Collecting things is a mental illness. Every time I go to good will and look for movies and games to buy, I just wonder who’s gonna bring my stuff there when I croak? Or even worse, is some loser reseller going to buy it all in a lot?
It will be a headache for your heirs. My parents are dealing with this and my grandfathers enormous collections of (nice) things. Do them a favour and when you are in the end of your twilight years put a massive amount of effort into selling the stuff they don’t want off for a fair price. They will appreciate a nest egg way more than your old nostalgia fuel, which won’t be their nostalgia fuel.
I love your videos, the way you narrate is so much fun and with a good amount of genuine energy. And what you say about what means to collect echoes thoughts I have in my head about continuing to pursuit my n64 collection or even the PCE collection I so wanted to start
Just found your channel. I really enjoy the concept of this video. I’m getting to the point where I feel like enough is enough. Thanks for this rare but very valid viewpoint
If you liked the brothers in arms games with their squad controlling aspects, (while not on consoles) "Ready or Not" is a game that sees you as a commanding officer taking on different scenarios within a SWAT unit. A good mix of challenge and creative scenarios give a really great game! 9/10 Play as a single player style or play multiplayer as well with up to 5 others!
love to see hot wheels velocity x being picked up. one of my personal faves; i love when racing games have a corny little story in it. Combine that with decent enough gameplay, vehicular combat, a challenge mode, and a joyride mode with extra collectibles to find with more unlockables, i think its a surprisingly enjoyable game to play through!
Never been to a swap meet or convention. It’s fun to see ya go out and find neat things! I really never played the Wii, but I have great memories of playing wii sports. I mainly focus on switch but will sometimes get other console games but not very often. I do enjoy come across nes/snes but I don’t collect any. N64 is one of my favorite consoles so I’ll get games here and there but switch is my jam.
Such a great video, and it appears the end is near for the manual, unless that monster burns it, then I agree you may never find one. Love the content. Was listening/watching this one as I cleaned up the finds from the weekend. Made a stupid decision though, used nail polish remover (100% pure acetone) to clean marker off the back of a Gameboy game (Adventures of Star Saver), so the back is messed up now, but I will find one to replace it with (the back I mean) at some point lol. Thank you for all the amazing content, hope you're doing well and have a wonderful day. #Roadto30k
I often wonder if it will ever be enough. Even if I stopped collecting games, I’m 1000% sure that I would just move on to something else to fill that unfillable void. Not sure what that is or where it comes from, but I’ve got it lol
Hey Mort! If you’re looking for a new Road Rash game you should check out Road Redemption. It’s available on multiple platforms and is the same general concept of the Road Rash series. Racing and beat em up rolled into one game. Plenty of upgrades, characters, and weopons to unlock too. I highly recommend it! Thanks for all the quality content.
Personally, I cant wait until you find an actual decent game on the N64. One would think that you would already have one by now considering you have the full set and all... 😏
I believe all powers should be in your bookbag, so you don't accidentally buy one more broken console. It's obviously a former blockbuster employee, they all had voices like that
the NES is a low priority console for me. Games are a pain in the ass to get to run on the system, unlike most other cartridge based systems. Most of the good games for the system are available elsewhere with more/better features, and the colors are UGLY compared to the Master System.
Currently playing Midnight Suns. X-com 2 is one of my favorite games, and I really wish it was more like that, but its still pretty good if you like turn based tactics. The dialogue is cringe to me though. Everyone is less of a character and more of like an off the shelf bad impression of what people think they sound like. Every time someone talks is always about a Macguffin, and always with some reference to something. Contrast with something like the Arkham games where everyone sounds like a real character.
Hey Mort, if you are missing Road Rash, have you heard of / played Road Redemption on the last gen? At its core it’s the same idea + more weapons and a bit more of a crazy setting but adds on a rogue like style progression. It really scratches the Road Rash itch for me.
I’m a Musician, and I know the feeling I have a bad case of GAS..(Gear acquisition syndrome) one bass to another guitar to another Bass and on and on, I do play them all though.
I honestly would just watch the unofficial condensed version of the prequels, the original trilogy with only the good additions and changes from the SEs, but mostly the original versions, and Rogue One/Solo if I was going to introduce someone to Star Wars today. Then maybe the good shows, like Clone Wars, Rebels, Andor and Mandalorian Seasons 1/2.
@@MortsGarage I like most of Phantom Menace, it only needs a few tweaks to be much more enjoyable. The biggest thing that the condensed versions removed was a good amount of Attack of the Clones, since most of that movie is unnecessary and boring. Overall I still think the prequels have more value in watching them over the sequels. I won't even watch those movies anymore, and would remove them from the canon if I could lol.
Need to adjust your statement on the PSP batteries there. I have two Sony OEM batteries from around 2006/7 that are still going strong. Of course I cycle them yearly. Still getting about 3.5 hour game time life too.
@@MortsGarage They can last for a few years without cycle if kept in climate controlled rooms too, but the longer they go with out electricity through them the more capacity they'll lose.
