When Copying gets morally sketchy | Art + chat

What distinction is there between copying and stealing? The difference might seem obvious, but there are nuances that can put us in a moral gray zone when it comes to copying from our favorite artists. In the end it comes down to your personal ethical compass. If your work is inspired by someone else, say so. If you directly copied or even traced someone else’s drawing, it’s only ethical to clearly credit the person who created the original drawing/artwork or at least state that you are not using your original art. What are your thoughts?

Proper use of social media is sharing other creators as intended. Stealing content and claiming it as one’s own is just theft. Same goes for copying other art in the process of learning techniques and skills, but the line is crossed if someone sells the copy as their own original art. Your work is lovely and greatly appreciated.

1) I stumbled across your channel about a week ago and your drawings have ignited my creative spirit. After not picking up a drawing implement for years, I went out and bought a small notebook and a couple of decent ink pens. And I’m copying lots of elements of your drawings! But I’m NOT posting them anywhere, lol! Your techniques and instruction are simply infectious. The fact that so many of us are following you is testament to that. Thank you for making me feel like a real artist. I wish you could have heard what my husband said when he saw my sketchbook! 2)There is a special ring in hell for those who appropriate others work and talent for their own glory.

I totally agree, one painting i did someone's sister inlaw took inspiration and did a similar yet different take on it, you could clearly see the similarities in it but it was different enough to be her own which was the most amazing feeling especially because at that point i didnt think my artwork was very good. I was actually very shocked they thought it was that good that they wanted to do something similar! But if it was copied exactly the same it would have been a different feeling and is the same reason i share videos to hopefully inspire someone to see that one thing they can apply to their own unique creations 🙏💖

Miss Betsi- I just found you. What a great composition artist you are. I, also, have been doing my own version of what is now called Zentangle since 1956. I find your designs quite inspiring and appreciate your honesty. You’re right. Recognizing and giving credit for inspiration has never hurt an artist. It only adds credit and trust to their own art. I'm so sorry you've had to experience this kind of betrayal in our arting world. I totally agree with everything you've said. I think it's good that we, the "choir," are reminded of this because we may know of someone who is misrepresenting themselves with their art, and we can call them out. You don't want to think there are people who would do something like this, but you are right. Unfortunately, there are, and they shouldn't get away with it. We should be giving credit where credit belongs. I love your work, and as a beginner, studying your and other videos is truly how I learn. Instead of using the word copying, perhaps practicing your process might be a more palatable term for those of us who are genuinely trying to learn. I pray that we all help to keep each other honest with our craft, and I thank you for having this conversation. By the way, this piece is gorgeous. I'll be studying and practicing this one for a while because I can't seem to get the flow, shading, and then what to do with the edges that need some fill-in quote right on my own. I'm just so new! ❤❤❤

I am a writer. On several occasions I have had people blatantly steal what I have written and claim it as their own in public and even in published works. They didn't even have the sense to hide it! I have had people take credit for my artwork and photography as well. Obviously, artists inspire others. Why bother doing anything if it isn't inspirational? There is a big difference between being inspired to try something and replicating something with your own name on it. You can't let it make you bitter or stingy though. Give what you have gladly. Creating is risky business! You have a great attitude about it all. :)

I do this for a hobby. I enjoy trying to draw what I see. It is satisfying when I do. These are my personal use, always on the back I write the original artist and where I got it. Sometimes on pinterest I see pictures I saved and when someone else saves it comes up saying " like this, let me know" as if I am the original artist. I apologize to anyone when this happens. I don't want to steal anyone's work.

It's very nice of you to take note of where you got an idea from 💕. In truth after multiple iterations, that information gets lost, and most of us understand that you're not trying to steal anything from anyone 😊. It's the kind of thing you can tell someone if they reach out to you to ask. This is why If I notice that something I'm doing looks like someone else's work, I'll reference it if I can, even if it wasn't what inspired my work. What matters is that we try 💜. This separates us from the bad actors who only take and never credit others even when they blatantly stole.

Because of multiple issues with my spine, I have had to give up the many artistic persuits I have found great joy and pride. The litany of those pursuits as well as those I found suscess in, mainly painting florals in watercolor ( I love painting and drawing leaves) I can no longer enjoy due to the limitations of my back and neck. I found your wonder art, I love shading and just doodling. I always have pencils and ink pens and have a collection of drawings pinned up on the walls of my art room. I carry a small art journal with me now all the time. Yours lit up my mind and I thought "could I do this"? Well yes I can, not with the gentle flowing of ink to paper you display. But when I do copy and practice your work dispite the fact that they are nowhere as beautiful as yours, I always feel like Im stealing a portion of you. And meanwhile in the world of zentangling..... people copy a simple pattern, from others, and some add their own 'flair' to the design..... lol. i always credit the person i got the pattern/ideas from. Mostly out of just plain descency. i like the way you fill in the negative spaces and heavy outlining. :)

Dear Miss Betsy, your work is absolutely gorgeous! I have just subscribed to your channel. Every thing you have discussed in this video is on point! What that person did was not honorable at all. That person was taking your creative work whether subtle or not, and claiming it as their own. That is thievery…Period!!! Shame on that person for doing that. On a lighter note, I must say that, as I try to follow along with you, trying my best, to be creative, your voice is so soothing to me. Sketching while listening to your voice is the best ASMR that I have come across! Thank you Miss Betsy. Keep up the great and very inspirational work. We appreciate you 😊🙏🏽💖

You ARE good. Great, in fact, in my mind anyway, and in many others, I'm sure. I actually attempt to copy your drawings in order to get the method and technique down, but they're hardly recognizable, and I certainly wouldn't share and try to pass it off as my design. This was awesome. Sorry you’ve had negative experiences with that but you deal well with it. It is good to hear your perspective regarding the ethical line that can be easily crossed without fully comprehending the consequences, however, as the judge will tell you, ignorance of the law is not a defense. On a different note, I love the process you’ve shown in your tutorials and I’m impressing myself(mostly an appreciator of art, not usually a creator) with attempting to copy your process as I learn how to create the shapes and learn shading. @Miss Betsi Something that's morally wrong can be just as bad as stealing. The people who copy your art down to the circle (you draw circles 😊) may not be getting financial gain but they are still getting visual gains. People are thinking that picture belongs to the thieves advertising it which could hurt you down the line. What if people are looking at the thieves as the originator and come after you as the thief? Don't apologize for feeling however you feel. I can appreciate you giving thought to what's going on despite your feelings about it. Emotions aren't logical so it's good to go over things logically. Just as there's a thin line between love and hate, there is a thin line between admiration and thievery. Thank you for sharing. so sorry that you had to go through that.. my son is an digital artist and gets commissions and that is how he makes his living. some body stole his images and even went so far to put his own name on the images and tried to pass them off as his own art. however.. my sons work is quite recognized and people started messaging him to tell him what this person had done. what a mess trying to get that all straightened out legally. it made him so upset.. and of course it would. I enjoy your videos so much.. you have been such an inspiration and are the reason i have delved into doing zentangling. i have learned so much in the last week.. you make it look so simple. i did indeed do one of your tutorials... and shared my result on my facebook page. it was different than yours, because i dont follow instructions well.. lol.. , and i told everyone that it was inspired by a video tutorial on youtube, however did not name you . ( im old and had forgotten your name to be honest as you were just one of many zentangle videos i had watched before settling on one to learn from ) i will go back and change that though, to make sure that my friends know who to look for on youtube. you do awesome work and i am so glad there are people like you that are there to help people who are new to this kind of art to find their focus. i also forgot to mention that i do not sell my artwork, but keep it in a file along with my colored pencil, pastel and watercolor projects. i used to do a lot of pet portraits back in the day, and made some nice pocket change, but took a 35 year hiatus from drawing while i raised kids and worked full time. now that i have retired, i find i have more time to find that creative side of myself again. i have branched into a bunch of interests to find one that really grabs me..sadly the talent that used to flow so easily for me has got rusty ( like my joints and eyesight have..lol. ) so it takes a bit more practice to relearn what i used to know without trying. 3 dimensional is a real challenge for me now. and i want to learn the weaving and knots patterns so i can do celtic crosses and so on. you have a wonderful day. :) @@betsi_jae

I don't really share my drawings beyond family & friends, but even with that, I let them know who or what I've been inspired by. If for no other reason than possibly pointing them towards someone or something to look at as well. It's just the nice thing to do. But you have pointed out something to me. I have noticed that a few of "my" pins have been removed on Pintrest. I add something I like so that I can look at it later. Now I wonder if people think those pins are mine. Something I need to look into. I've just never thought about an online presence like that before.

That's so interesting... So someone else took down your pinned photos on Pinterest? I wonder if the originators flagged it or reported it? That seems odd since I thought the idea behind Pinterest was that someone would post a nice photo and other people would pin it in order to share it. 🤔

I think the problem is that if someone saves your video on RU-vid it can save it as public in the account that saves it. I didn’t even know I had a channel until I found out that I had 13 followers! I think that RU-vid shares stuff that folks have saved for their own use not knowing that it was saved as public in their account. I know their are people that do steal content but some times they don’t know their saved videos are being posted by the RU-vid algorithm. Just a thought.

@Solitude11-11
@Solitude11-11 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for this, it really clarified some of the thoughts I’ve had floating around my head (they do that at lot 😂) Thinking about it, virtually every artist is inspired by, learns from, or is taught by, another artist. You very often see it being talked about even with the great masters throughout history. And techniques and tools are definitely learned. My grandmother taught me how to use oil paints. I used her technique for painting eg trees at first, but I never copied her subjects, I was inspired by different ones. I was hugely inspired by Aubrey Beardsley at one time, I used his technique a lot, but never actually copied his subject matter. I still have that inspiration many decades later. I think that’s why I like your art so much, there is something about it that feels similar. Of course years ago before social media people could get away with outright copying other people much more easily, as long as you weren’t exhibiting in a prestigious gallery you could copy a painting and sell it and no one was any the wiser, I’m sure that went on. Now everyone wants clout on social media and many don’t care whether the clicks and likes are actually for their own effort or just for reposting someone else’s. Which is sad, because they are kidding themselves, and somewhere deep down they know that. Out and out stealing for profit is a different thing, and that’s always happened, with everything. Many artists, particularly makers of sculptures and art dolls, are having their photos used by Chinese companies who scam people into parting with cash for something they never get, it’s a huge issue and all over the big selling sites. You are right about people taking inspiration making you happy, it really does. Teaching something to someone and seeing them succeed is the best 😊
@betsi_jae
@betsi_jae 9 месяцев назад
Wow! Yes, there are so many problems going on out there in the art world and there always have. It’s unfortunate that people’s gorgeous photos of their own work are being used in overseas marketplaces. I used to be a crochet teacher, so I started a presence online back in the day so I could share inspiration and patterns with my students. Even then, I would search google images for copies of my patterns and I would find them all over the place. I even found a blog where a woman claimed that she was using her own original pattern 😂. I laughed and moved on. What was there to do?
@Solitude11-11
@Solitude11-11 9 месяцев назад
@@betsi_jae It’s awful, and most artists have just given up trying to fight it. The selling sites do nothing, FB or Amazon etc, I suppose they don’t care as long as they get their cut. Crochet! I learned years ago, made baby clothes and such, a few things for me, haven’t done it for years. Then recently started again, inspired by the many channels with patterns and tutorials. I sale cards, I use stamps, I don’t copy what I see with the stamps or reproduce someone card. I make it my own and put my touch on it I can’t even make the same card twice and I have a lot of cards. When doing pattern drawings even if you copy someone’s drawing it can maybe look like it but it will never be it because it’s done with a different hand. So I do see we’re your coming from and understand also to make something your own from something you see has to be changed 80% and that makes it yours. So if your going to change something just do it 100% and then it’s inspired by you and a credit to you would be nice.

thank you so much for the wonderful drawing you just did and for the inspirational conversation. Having never tried art of any kind until almost 3 years ago, I didn’t even think I could draw a stick figure. Then I found Zentangle and I am amazed at what I have created over the last three years, but I still am lacking in thinking up my own ideas to draw so to speak. I follow lots of videos and like you say they come out quite different than the original, but I always try to tag the creator because I couldn’t even think of claiming it as my own. Like others have said in the comments I read, if you ever see anything that I have done, and I’ve crossed any lines, please be sure to let me know, because it would be purely unintentional. Even after three years of drawing, I still rarely can just put pen to paper and draw first line and see where it goes. I am learning 😂, But at almost 77 years old, let’s hope I learn soon although my mother did live to be 102, so I may still be around for quite a few years. 🤪❤️

As far as pens, if I'm at an office supply store I will get the Sharpie Roller 0.5 . At an art atore, I prefer the Tombow Fudenosuke or at least a small set of felt tip fineliners. For your wolf drawing I unfortunately wouldn't know what's the right choice. Often when I can't decide on a pattern I just use the simplest one I can imagine.
