In case you did not find out where the name kapsalon came from; The story of the snack kapsalon starts in 2003 with the hairdresser Nataniël "Tati" Gomes (1976-2023). The hairdresser asked for a bowl of fries with shawarma, cheese, sambal and garlic sauce at the Rotterdam kebab shop El Aviva. The boss of the business, Dervis Bengü, immediately named the snack 'kapsalon' (hair salon) - after Gomes' profession. The name stuck and is now sold all over the country by kebab shops & many Snackbars.

Why is a platypus called a vogelbekdier? The platypus is a crazy animal. It has the characteristics of three other animals. It has the beak of a duck, the body of a mole and the tail of a beaver. The beak of a platypus is not hard like that of birds, but softer, so it can dig around in the mud. Mammal or bird? The platypus is a mammal, but lays eggs like a bird. The eggs are very small and blue, yellow and white in color. Platypuses grow to about 60 centimeters in length and weigh 1 to 2 kilos. The animals live in rivers in Australia and Tasmania. Platypuses love to eat! They like worms, frogs, crustaceans, shrimps, frogspawn and insects. They eat up to 1 kilo of food per day!

A kapsalon is a Dutch dish consisting of fries covered with shawarma, topped with cheese, briefly placed under the grill so that the cheese melts, with salad on top. Instead of shawarma, the kapsalon is also prepared with kebab, döner, gyros or chicken. The kapsalon served with garlic sauce and sambal. The sauce is under the cheese and lettuce and above the fries.

Ezelsbruggetjes: Mnemonics: There are few people who don't use tricks to remember things - who don't use mnemonics. But where does this come from? The word probably comes from the fact that a donkey only needs a very small bridge, such as a plank, to get where he needs to go, but without that aid - without that trick - he can't do it. (A fun fact. In the first century AD, Pliny writes about donkeys that do not want to walk over a bridge. If the donkeys see the water through them, the donkeys have to be guided to walk over a bridge)

If I'm not mistaken, there is a snack store in Eindhoven - and maybe it's not the only one - which sells a 'friet kernoorlog' (literally 'fries nuclear war'). The difference between that and the regular one is that curry sauce is added as well. I believe this kind of topping has been called 'war' because it wasn't expected that the cold and slightly both salty and sour mayonaise and the warm/hot peanut sauce could work as a good combination. Also, I don't know if it's true (probably not), but there have been stories about the colors of both sauces and the origins of both combined being a representation of racial riots. I think it's nonsense. However, it seems more reasonable to believe that our history with the Dutch East Indies has something to do with the invention of this topping (saté/peanut sauce from the east, mayonaise from the west).

Klokhuis - Imagine an old wall or standing clock with 2 weights attached by chains. These weights were sometimes enclosed in the case(housing) of the clock and sometimes these were visible from the outside through an opening. Now imagine the weights being apple seeds and you get to the clock house idea. Handschoenen - If i remember this correctly then Dutch is completely correct in using the word shoe for covering hands. I think Modern English is limiting the use for feet only while it had a broader meaning originally, a long time ago.

What does 'Now the monkey comes out of the sleeve' mean and where does this expression come from? When it suddenly becomes clear how something is going, or when someone's true intention or character is finally revealed, it is very common to exclaim "Now the monkey is out of the sleeve!" This expression probably goes back to a monkey who was literally in a sleeve. Some artists used to hide a monkey up their sleeve that had to emerge unexpectedly at a certain moment.

sure makes you think, how thinking processes in general are shaped by language eh? Even English is a hodgepodge or many languages, like a formal kinda Pidgin or something, just all stemming from similar tribes of course.... language is fascinating, which is also why songs and stories with music and poetry is so damn fun. we love little patterns in the brain that just take us away, and sometimes hypnotizes us into a wonderful daydream, or not so wonderful........ but the sharing of thought and thought patterns is fun. here is something you can trick someone with, my grandmother taught me as a kid, there are two tricks to play on people to mess with mind a bit and make them and you laugh. they have to answer the question as naturally quick as expected for a simple question. here goes number one.... first you tell them: [you] "spell POTS"......... [them] "P-O-T-S" [you] "What do you do at a green light?" [them will probably say stop] second trick: [you] "Spell FOLK as in old folk" [them] "F-O-L-K" [you] "What's the white stuff in an egg?" [them will probbly say yolk}

Maybe you shouldn't write of the "patatje oorlog" so easely. It is almost never made with mayonaise, but with frietsaus(fries-sauce). That is not as soure as mayonaise. And in the northern half of the country, we do not put unions on it. Tastes really good.

the dutch discovered and owned Tasmania for a while, they were not the first to discover the platypus, but they did come up with the name before platypus was the official name, so it's not one that is changed from latin to dutch, also kangaroo and koala aren't english names, they are aboriginal names, the english and dutch just adopted the original aboriginal name into their language so not being creative goes to the english as well

Vogelbekdier is birdbeekanimal. 😂 Kapsalon was created in Rotterdam. A hairdresser would always order the same dish when working late and the shoarma shop then named it kapsalon because of that. And from there you now can get it in almost every shoarma shop in the Netherlands. Talking about cows and calves is in English chitchat.

Actually, it's from luip aard where the verb luipen means loeren (English: lurking). Since both lui and paard are more recognisable words than luip and aard the change is understandable.

@@maartenwitpaard1737 It's not though. From Middle Dutch lupaert, leupart, liepart, from Old Dutch *liupard, from Old French leopard, from Late Latin leopardus, from Ancient Greek λεόπαρδος (leópardos). From λέων (léōn, “lion”) +‎ πάρδος (párdos, “leopard, panther”)

Butter is (or at least used to be) a protected name (so that margarine could not pass as butter), so peanutbutter was called after another spreadable thing called leverkaas. But yeah that doesnt contain cheese neither so i guess there's no point to explain all this.. Have a nice day!
