That year he was bar none the fastest....big time until the thunder valley crash. What's crazy is if he could have stayed on 2 wheels that season he may have been able to roll on with a record for out doors better than he currently has.
@@coltoncarpenter3790 yeah I remember being little and watching that crash, i was happy because i wanted reed to win, which he didn’t anyways. But looking back on it and eli now being my favorite rider i hate watching that crash. Imo one of the biggest championship crashes in history. Lots of people fantasize about eli going undefeated or close too that year, and i really think it was possible
He has his suspension guy from this race working for him at star. With stars open rider setting tomac will be putting on a clinic this year. Herrings will be in for a surprise. Be nice see them 2 go full season
Eli tomac will go down as one of the all time greats. 3 straight outdoor championships, and 1 supercross title. (hopefully a second this year) 6 daytona wins and 5th on the all time wins list. People say dungey is the last of the “dynasty riders” like MC, Ricky and Villopoto, but Tomac certainly took that spot in the limelight once they all left. Hell, dungey retired flat out because of the hell that Tomac gave him his last year in 2017. He was contracted through 2019 i think. Goes to show how crazy this dude is on a bike! Edit: He won his second title in Denver this past weekend, ushering him into the title rankings (2) of James stewart, chad reed, and Cooper Webb.
@@johnnyvivic8730 It was either in a podcast or another similar racing video. And it is kind of a word of mouth thing since Dungey didnt say it in what i saw but someone else saying he did. The back injury scared him and certainly helped his retirement but from what i heard he knew he was getting older and in 2017 with how much tomac was progressing he knew he could no longer hold him off to win another title
And here we are with Tomac still slaying the field. So sad he won't race outdoors next year. At least Sexton was able to elevate himself to that level. Tomac will stomp in supercross with that new yamaha. Won't be riding a whale so you know he will kill it.
This has to be the closest thing to Carmichael lapping the field that will ever happen, and honestly is a little more impressive given the conditions and racers in this race
The GOAT had a mudder to lap the field, still crazy, this was fun to watch. The lap times, which aren't mentioned enough, Tomac was 5 sec best better than Dungey but when they show Dungey's lap and leader's it's around 8 sec sometimes. Crazy, these guys are all so fast and to have Tomac making everyone look like they where on 125's is well, this was very cool.
@@johnnybgood774 So? RD and KR both were, and they raced with and beat James plenty of times and Tomac smoked them both. Tomac has beaten James before, too. Not a relevant point to make. James was _never_ as dominant against the same level of competition as Tomac has been. He even said outright that Tomac was the only younger rider he was genuinely afraid of because of the blistering pace he's capable of.
@@alondite215 js7 semi retired in 2009 so keep that in mind... he was never the same after reality tv, skip mx seasons/ fire baker etc, we only saw glimpses of his talent after that. et was very very impressive but rd won champions with podiums instead of wins and kr was injured back then
@@williammactavish3913 sorry but a mud race from Ricky is the only race more dominant than this and they were going at a snails pace that race. This is the fastest pace to this day in motocross. 6 seconds a lap faster than the champion Dungey. Sorry Ricky never smoked the second place rider this bad outside of the most boring race ever.
Since his thunder valley crash back then it toned him down big time. Tomac has the speed to be this and capability but finds it too much of a risk. There was an interview of him recently where he explained his mistake of pushing that speed especially back then with less experience on the 450.
And that track was BRUTAL. They don't let them get this gnarly anymore for some reason. When I was younger I raced Millville all the time, and it always sorta pissed me off how smooth the track was for the pro race because how absolutely destroyed it was for any average amateur day, because when you have 1,000 amateur bikes vs 80 pros, it just doesn't break down the same. This track was like 1,000 amateurs had been on it. Makes it even more impressive to me, probably also part of why he was able to stretch it out so far. Those conditions really separate the men from the boys.
@@jake02cute I agree it is a very capable bike, as we saw AP and Ferrandis do very well on it last season but I don't think you can say Tomac is washed up when he became a 5 time Daytona winner, 3rd in points and won 2 of the last 3 races outdoors.
He’s disrespected because of his random weirdo races where it looks like he belongs on a privateer bike. He’s untouchable at times. He has the stats to be one of the greats and I believe he is. But the all timers were that dominate every day, every race they ever did.
Back then the field had no where near the talent depth it does now. You had 3 guys that could win in Ricky's era. And you had rv and dungey. When they came in and Stewart on the backside of his career. Eli's era. You've got 5-6 guys that can win at any time. Really it's more impressive now in my opinion for him to get a mediocre start on a tight supercross track and still win. When there aren't many spots to make up time most of the tracks
That was a Historical Performance by Eli Tomac. To win by 1 min 23 seconds over the second place rider Ryan Dungey, on a normal day is something that doesn't happen in pro motocross.
Sad because Tomac has never pushed himself as hard as he did in 15' people say here comes beast mode but this is his pure beast mode. That crash made him step it back a bit and he still slays.
arguable, he won 5 motos in a row out of 24 motos an RC & stew both went undefeated yet ive heard alot of people in the moto media say 2015 eli is the fastest theyve ever seen. herlings just said he crashed because he was going to fast for the bike n track lol
Agree. Hurlings is certainly dominant and is certainly the greatest motocross rider in the world right now but I haven't ever seen him put in that kind of performance.
I'm American, but dog.. he came to America where he'd never ridden the track , fell , dead last and came back to win. I can only think of a couple riders that's done that . Give the respect where it's due. Herlings is fkn gnarly bo
Yep ur right his dad just gave let us all know on the podcast he had his bike dialed and his suspension guy on that year on his honda but didn’t have same guy on Kawi but now he does on the Yamaha again so he has the bike dialed in for him
I wish Jett would ride like this, to the maximum. As an MX fan, I want to see someone ride to their fullest. Just managing races and winning by going the slowest possible to win is smart but it feels like a cop out.
I think that this was the last time that ET3 looked totally comfortable on the bike. He never had the same flow on the Kawi. Let’s see how he clicks with the blue bike!
And according to an interview with his dad, the Geico Honda team went to the moon and back to get that bike suitable for him. But he didn't want to race that frame for supercross so he left Geico Honda for Kawi. It's interesting watching these old races knowing some of what was going on behind the scenes.
yeah but you gotta remember the overall skill/speed gap between the fastest and the slowest pros is significantly smaller than it was. RC and CR22 both have said that some weeks against James the only thing you could do was hope he'd crash. it's not like that anymore. i think most guys who are capable of qualifying are just as capable of winning a moto as anyone else on the track, which is great for competition, not so great for seeing someone just come out and do something insane, like ET3 here, JS7 coming from 40th to 1st, RC lapping the entire field, etc
If Eli is going to be the king of MX he has 7 more titles to win and he has to have 3 undefeated seasons to beat RC. so quick to forget about the GOAT RC has the largest gap in a win in moto history he lapped everyone.
@@mehoffjack1874 yep everyone still lined up and he still lapped them and he had plenty of big wins in good conditions and Eli still has a lot to do to be considered "the king of moto" just think it's funny people see a video of 1 of Eli's many incredible rides and say he is the king of moto when Ricky never lost a championship outdoors and had 2 24-0 seasons among many other accomplishments and skip over him so quickly just my 2 cents 😉
@zim7489 lol, not RC's fault his competition couldn't hang or didn't train like him. Also he beat JS7 on the regular, and JS7 isn't dog shit. So by your logic, Mcgrath's wins in sx mean nothing because he was racing old men that couldn't figure sx out?
@@AlexBekkema in my opinion they sre equal on their best day. When they racet at ironman herlings had nothing to loose. Eli was fighting for the championship
@@Motoinc hmm yeah that sounds about right, but i still do think herlings may be a little more skilled at the outdoors. At supercross he doesnt stand a chance for sure
@@AlexBekkema SX is cool but IMO moto is where boys become men. But Eli and Herlings is the 2 best in the world with very cool styles on the bike. When they bring their Agame its looks so brutal.
He would’ve been the third rider in history to go a season undefeated this year when he was doing this if it wasnt for that crash. He made it throught thunder valley and went 7-0 he woulda just kept on going
For those 5 motos Eli was the fastest racer ever. I know we don't like to compare guys that didn't actually race each other BUT I think this one is pretty obvious. The only exception to this would be the 2006 Spring Creek mud race where RC lapped the field.
He should've NEVER left that honda , he never jelled with that Kawi , he fought that bike until he left it. I believe he'd have 2 more supercross titles and another outdoor
It was a simple mistake of the rear wheel bouncing to the wrong rut. If you look back on RCs past he had many lucky close calls, but like Travis Pastrana said RC had the best luck of any rider always being a weeble wobble.
@@coltoncarpenter3790 Is it JS something sluggish)? Every time someone started to press down on RC, he always started to go faster, and most importantly, without injuries!
