The fact that the guy behind it did a Reddit AMA and IMMEDIATELY received the flair *"Villain of the Wastes -9999 points"* has me on the goddamn floor, good lord
My favorite part of the survivor 2299 story is a very real fallout 4 leak happened right after and everyone just ignored it because of how burned out they were
Imagine how to creator of survivor 99 felt when fallout four came out with the main character being the soul Survivor set in Boston with one of the main fractions being the Institute. I mean, the man called it.
Inside job. I imagine it was originally supposed to come out then and they wanted to leak it, but it turned out not being ready (as if any Bethesda game is ever, or ever becomes ready).
I highly doubt it was a dev, since I don't think anyone would risk their job like that. But maybe a friend of someone at Bethesda who spilled a bit more information than he should have.
I remember there was a bunch of leaks during the early stages of Fallout 4's creation, he may have taken some of that info and added it to the web site. Possible.
I legit had NO idea about any of this until now. Some friends bought me Fallout 4 when I was like, I think 16? And I had a hell of a fun time. I can only imagine them (Who were adults and worked in the gaming industry) saw all this come crashing down and real time and didn't want to spoil my fun xDDD
This had to be somebody with connections to Bethesda I'd think How did he get Boston setting, Institute faction and Sole Survivor as the character correct if not
@@nomorepartyinlaI mean if he’s an MIT employee, it’s not much a stretch to say that he was likely privy to knowing that Beth scouters were sniffing around
Fallout 4 was pretty clearly going to be set in Boston anyway though. Maybe his story was true, maybe it wasn’t. But either way, Boston was a pretty safe guess.
The amount of info the guy guessed alongside the Cease and Desist order makes me believe he was either an employee or got some genuine info leak from one Wonder if they'll do something like this for Fallout 5, tho i don't believe i'll live till it's announcement in the year 2369
I am shitting everything. drawers, my goddam trousers, the seat gon be color shifted brown and I'm driving into the nearest traffic railing that is near a body of water.
For those curious about how the leaker managed to accurately predict so many details, around that time the community largely already suspected that Fallout 4 would be set in Boston and involve the Institute. This conclusion stemmed from hints in Fallout 3 suggesting Boston as a potential location, alongside reports of Bethesda employees seen in the Boston area for research purposes, similar to their activities in Washington D.C. before the release of Fallout 3. Bethesda has a tendency to drop hints about the setting or storyline of their next game in their previous releases. If I were a betting man Fallout 5 will take place in San Francisco, I mean it’s pretty obvious you go into Kellogs memory and see that he is from SF, we also see the Hubologist make a return in Nuka world who are from SF, and supposedly Bethesda told Obsidian to not mention SF in New Vegas as well as the writers of the TV show were told to not mention SF either.
@@Knights_of_the_Nine it’s referenced in Fallout 3. But spelled out? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It’s ok to give props to people for making correct inferences. Fuckin idiot.
@@jackalexande No, me and all my friends even thought there would be a DLC in the Commonwealth with the Institute for Fallout 3. The quest in Fallout 3 fleshed it way out in a way that just seemed off, like it was definitely meant to be more than a 1 off quest.
They complain about the writing, yet Capcom has even worse then Bethesda’s, and yet they make masterpieces that would make anyone happy, Leon went from exploring a abandoned village to denying gravity in a hi-tech lab, Chris went from a mystery in an African village to punching a boulder in a active volcano while having a slap fight with a BOW enhanced coworker. What is wrong with Bethesda’s writing now? Just a couple oofs with the story?
@@Aguy522 That feels like a major false equivalency. For one, I think there's a ton of issues with modern Bethesda releases on top of the writing but to say the writing shouldn't matter because other popular series with bad writing (subjectivity aside) is like saying that no one should enjoy any Mario or Zelda title because "Bad man take princess. Guy save princess." , isn't an amazing, captivating story. Good writing is always good but like graphics, or even gameplay, any given game can rely on it for various amounts, for an RPG like Fallout to be lacking in that way is a much bigger deal than an action game having campy or poor writing.
@Jaffersin I probably should of done Skyrim or some of the other RE games, but still, Skyrim is a gift from Godd and nobody except 4 people play, yet it still is very much a masterpiece, the other RE games still have bad writing, “you were almost a Jill sandwich”. But I get it, have a good day
That last comment about how Bethesda uses the same engine is insane but very accurate I played Starfield and it felt like Skyrim mixed with Fallout and Space.
It's not the same engine, not even a little It's tantamount to saying the original Unreal is the same as UE5, or better yet SOURCE is still just Quake The amount of changes made to the system it's hardly recognizable anymore, and of course it's always people who don't actually mod or who know very little about mods that say this
You forgot that not only did matty blew up over survivor2299 but also yongyea who became the new english voice of kazuma kiryu and lonevaultwanderer who does a lot of stuff. And nowadays well, it went from just a select bunch of fallout youtubers to pop culture and everyone talks about fallout. Also, you forgot the leaked fallout 4 documents that were released when survivor2299 was kicking off and the fake survivor2299 ties like "The Propheteer" and some facebook group that matty reported on but i forgot its name.
From my memory, there were people from MIT and the general Boston area that spoke up publicly about meeting Bethesda employees while they were scouting the locations pre development.
Also there was an oddly detailed side quest involving both institute and railroad agents from the Commonwealth in Fallout 3. I don't remember if Boston was mentioned, but it's possible.
Synths, the Commonwealth, the Institute, the Railroad and the SRB were all in Fallout 3. Then a bunch of different people spotted Bethesda scouting locations in Boston during 2012 which is a year before the fake countdown anyway. We knew Fallout 4 was going to be Boston.
I'm still shocked at how accurate it was. I guess he just zeroed on the hanging thread from Fallout 3 and nailed it, but it's really crazy that he got that.
Not really, Bethesda are easy to predict. Watch this Elder Scrolls 6 will be set in both Hammerfell and High Rock with DLC in Orsinium and the main bad guys (who you can also join) are the Thalmor, whilst the opposing forces will be the Alik’r warriors. The player character will be the Hoonding (sword singer) of redguard legend. See? Easy af.
im so glad someone still remembered thesurvivor2299. This was also when fallout was relatively niche as fallout 4 marked it on the map (no pun intended). Heck i remember that mlp fanfiction of fallout had more reddit traction than fallout itself for a bit... we fallout fans were STARVED even tho new vegas literally came out for 3 years... I remember mrmattyplays getting so upset when it ended up being a hoax. really wish fallout icebergs included it.
It’s pretty funny how the sites predictions came true so all the effort that went into to deciphering everything became retroactively meaningful. Also I subscribed, this was a very well made video.
Nah a long time between game releases was anything longer than 5 years Look at it this way, if Todd & Co. had never wanted to do a space game ESVI would have been out for an entire year at this point. They added another IP to their wheelhouse which means 3 to juggle and each one takes at least 4 years to make minimum, they just gave us a tv show to hold us over AND made Starfield. To expect another game so soon is both unrealistic and entitled. Easiest way to look at all this is like this: Name me a single dev with more than 1 IP that they themselves make instead of just publish, now how many of them have more than 2? CDPR JUST NOW has 2 IPs to their name with the most recent one coming out 4 years ago and it's only DLC coming out 8 months ago, they've only JUST started physical production of the next Witcher game. That means it's going to be a total of 9 OR 10 years before their next release(W1 remaster don't count). It's very unusual for a Dev to have multiple IPs thats why publishing houses are generally the ones that own IPs and hand them out to their owned Dev studios
I legitimately don’t think I’ve seen someone cover this before, I remember an acquaintance made me aware of the website as it was happening, and I was beyond intrigued. Thanks for talking about this!
Hey man, stumbled across this video because of the algo. Basically a lifelong fallout fan, and I distinctly remember this drama and the ensuing chaos. Your editing and scripting is solid, dude. Excellent video, thank you for taking me for a stroll down memory lane. Best wishes.
In a perfect world they’d hire that 2299 guy as a marketing consultant or something that’s how you do a fuckin reveal I remember waking up at 4am to screen record the official countdown as it clicked over good times before life sucked… I had hope back then 😂
wrong, the settlement system was literally a last minuet add on Literally 3 months before the E3 reveal someone suggested settlement building during a meeting and everyone liked the idea so much they added it(and iirc the minuet men came around at almost the same time)
This video reminded me that this website was probably the first place I watched the Tunnel Snakes Rule video. Wild. I remember following this story using my school's and my local library's computers, because I didn't have the Internet at home.
This is a crazy memory unlocked for me. I shockingly, after all these years, still have a link in my bookmarks bar to the 100+ page shared google doc that was the source of record for new findings. It appears to have been deleted :(
Dude, the editing and humor in this vid is just immaculate. Glad someone took a moment to document this period of internet history. Never subbed to someone so fast!
Damn this was a trip down memory lane and very well done, kudos. December 6th is my birthday, and I remember when Bethesda sent that tweet out I was so disappointed lol. Was the worst 16th birthday ever
i mean.....that "trust me bro" source was dead-on though....... The institute was UNDER MIT afterall.......not a stretch that he'd see someone from Bethesda getting a tour of the campus or something
Y’know what’s weird? The guy behind that arg got everything right. Fallout 4 was set in Boston. The Institute was the main antagonist. The protagonist survived a great calamity, the Great War of 2077.
I was around back when everything was happening the first time. Why does everyone forget is that TheSurvivor2299 actually end up predicting exactly when Fallout 4 was to be announced.
I do remember following this through his channel and reddit. Being a senior high school with nothing better to do, this literally consumed my life like many others. Was literally gutted when it was found to be a trop... though I will say thank you for shouting out MrMattyPlays. This is how I came across his channel and if there's anything good that came out of this, it was that I found his channel and how he's now made a career out of RU-vid.
You know looking back at this, MrMattyPlays and I had a mini fued back then because he kept talking about that and I openly mocked him in the comments from all this. I guess he won because well he's famous and I'm a nobody lol
- Trolls Fallout Community - Accidentally predicts the setting, antagonist, and lore of Fallout 4 in the process of le epic troll - I love this f*cking community lol
i remember following this as it was happening, i genuinely think something more in the direction of this arg wouldve been better than the fallout 4 we got. also that 2013 mrmattyplays clip was such a throwback lol
It was too accurate for me, man. Either this guy had insider knowledge and this was his way of disseminating it, or Bethesda planned this and got cold feet for whatever reason and pulled the plug on it.
I was a HEAVY Fallout BGS forum user when this happened. The WALLS of texts I witnessed during this period were some of the most hilarious and frightening things I have ever seen on the internet. Man I miss those days
