When Getting Parts For A Edger Goes Wrong 

Nice edger, I like the angle adjustment option on it, mine doesn’t have it. I also came across a unit with right wheel height adjustment for working curbs. And thank God and internet for used parts market and community like yours to help us rookies have some fun with these machines in our garages. Keep’em coming brother

My Roof mower, 28 inch cut with the Briggs 8 horse I/C was backwards and I made it that way for that same reason. The way the throttle setup on the carb was made (vertical shaft) the cable had to run underneath and no use in getting new when the old was working. I just marked 'C' for choke by the upside where the lever travel was after I forgot and had trouble starting it. I was the only one that ran it, by the way. And a blob of Seal-all in a dry tank will fix pinholes in a Briggs tank like that or smaller. My old 85 Snapper was fixed like that when I got it. My old pal with his own saw shop told me about it. I've ether done 3 or 4 tanks like that and it fixed them all. Seems like Dollar Store or Dollar General carries Seal-all or even hardware stores like ACE or maybe Lowes. Ace does, I know. Good old flathead motors. BLESSINGS and Happy Weekend!

I believe the correct belt is a 9L. I have two of those. One with a two horse Briggs(probably was a replacement) and one with a 3.5 Techumseh.

i recently was removing door mirror from my old pickup truck . rivnut insert was spinning , so screw wouldn't come out . removed inside door panel , and to my surprise , found a pair of vise grips already clamped to the insert . i vaguely remember having to use them when installing the mirror over 25 years ago . best tool ever .

With an old McClane edger, the weakest link is always going to be the engine; and, as good a these old flathead Briggs were, that is saying something! Last time I checked (which was probably a decade ago) they were still in business and stilling building this same exact machine, only with a modern engine, which I found to be just amazing that they hadn’t cheapened the product and remained in business! I would have only returned the cable if I could have done so without cost to me and if the correct cable was available for the same price. Otherwise, I would have attempted to make one good cable out of the two, made up a corrected decal, or just learned to live with it. McClane did make a single front wheel model so I believe, in this case, I would have paid a visit to my local hardware store and purchased some metal or pvc plastic tubular spacers or a length of pipe with an ID just large enough to run the “axle” bolt through, centered the wheel on the shaft, measured the length of space on both sides of the wheel, then cut and installed the spacers to close up the slack on either side. About a decade ago, my father in-law really wanted a McClane edger and I was lucky enough to located a good older model at a nice price, but the engine smoked badly. I took the entire machine apart and cleaned each piece. I disassembled the engine and was surprised to find everything was in excellent condition, except the wall of the piston was completely smooth and shiny; having absolutely no “crosshatch pattern” to stop the oil from getting past the piston rings. I honed out the cylinder bore, reassembled the motor with new gaskets and new crankshaft seals (the lower was leaking badly). That solved the smoking and a presented my father in-law with a “clean as new” and well running machine. If you take care of a Mclane, it will last forever; if you neglect one, it will still outlast everything else!

The engine is for sure worth keeping if edger cannot be fixed reasonably.

Nice fix. I wouldn't worry about the throttle lever being backwards in operation. The one on my mower works that way.

I've only seen one of these free and it was gone when I got there ! Rare in these neck of the woods . Them old Briggs sure do run nice though don't they !!!

I have the same edger but havent used it here in awhile might this year for lawn maintenance for other yards

There's a flower bed edger at work, powered by a Honda. Runs excellent. That's not the issue, the shaft that turns the blades is bent. A new shaft couldn't be found but it can be made in a machine shop for almost a thousand dollars

On my old Mc Lane I would really like to have a breather like this one with a removable element rather than the one I have now that requires oiling.

It's fine the way it is.. He'll remember or figure it out. Or like you said, call you.

As long as the safety's work no biggie on the mods.

You can pop the housing apart there should be different holes to fix throttle

I wouldn't messed with the done project, as long as it works that's what all counts

Shame this edger was abused as long as it has - this is a great brand of equipment and this was a solid edger back in the day.

I had a stihl hsa 86 battery hedge trimmer 2019 model to fix and restore the blades but I insaled the wrong motherboard but I fixed it now

Well from my view as long as it works and does the trick well no problem really.

Maybe if it's all possible you could flip the level upside down inside of the housing !

I don’t think the throttle cable matters that much if it works it works you know if I’ve learned one thing I’ve heard this in a RU-vid video it’s just a lawnmower not a space shuttle

I would try to keep it original if possible but if not then l would do what you did.
