When I was a kid, back in the 70s and 80s, goalkeepers were just blokes with no other talent than catching the ball and being able to hoof the ball upfield. Since then, I’ve watched them go from that to impromptu sweepers, then to a third centre half, and now to the point where they can be a DCM with an eye for a free kick. That bicycle kick, though, was another level. It definitely shows that keepers can act as an eleventh outfield player when they train with the rest of the squad. And to think Stuart Pearce was laughed at for sending on David James as a striker, yet it turns out he was a pioneer. Who knew?
