One of the best training methods in fiction, is fighting yourself, you see your own actions from another perspective and find your strengths and more importantly your weaknesses. This doll was Goku's exact equal except for one detail, the doll had no thought and moved without any constraints, which is why Goku had such a hard time against it.

Well, between the fact that Toriyama had always been famous for forgetting details like this and the explanation that plenty of people are supposing is the case(that the doll technique has its limits, which is reasonable), it definitely would make sense that this just got completely swept under the rug

Like Whis, Popo is/was Kami's guardian. Meaning he's an agent of the gods more powerful and given special abilities than the guardian of earth. We just don't see him do much as, like Whis, he's not supposed to interfere too much.

The one thing I still remember about this thing is that when it uses the Kamehameha wave, it does creepy breathing noises instead of the usual shouting of the attack name that anyone else using it would do. Like it's trying to speak, but since it's just clay, it lacks the anatomy to actually form words.
Fun fact, the uniform colors of the doll are the original uniform colors by toriyama in the manga: light orange for the pants and shirt, white kanji instead of yellow and blue belt. The only thing are the red arm things (don't know how they are named) because are blue

I remember this episode traumatizing me when I was a kid. The doll's eyes were just too unsettling, and if that wasn't enough, the DVD reader started having visual glitches and lags. Even thinking about it now kinda gives me goosebumps.
You know how Goku steals/ gets trained in other's techniques, but sometimes disappears for weeks/ months/ years at a time? You can bet there's a Chichi doll out there somewhere, "helping out". Good job Popo! I'm kinda glad the after image technique didn't come up all that much.
When dragon ball actually had life creativity and uniqueness. I try to love dbz and the other series but I can’t as much as the original series. I grew up with dbz Kai but as a young adult watching dragon ball for the first time I knew I missed out and my goodness do I love Dragon ball. The goku doll is a very cool character and it’s only in one episode and still interests me more than a lot of characters from db super.
