In this video, we dive deep into the hidden dangers of smart motorways and expose how highway operators' mistakes with gantry signage are putting lives at risk. As an HGV driver, I share my firsthand experiences of driving on smart motorways, where incorrect or delayed sign updates can turn a routine journey into a deadly gamble.
We’ll examine real-life incidents where faulty signage has led to catastrophic accidents, explore the role of manual operations and human error, and highlight the terrifying reality faced by both HGV drivers and car occupants. With lives hanging in the balance, it's time to uncover the truth about how smart motorways are managed and the urgent need for change.
Join me as we reveal the life-threatening reality of smart motorway signs - and why we must demand safer, more reliable road management now.

Yes, motorways are now far more dangerous!!! I drive on them early hours of the morning when hardly any traffic. Where/when ever possible I will not use the motorway during the day. Those signs are never updated, variable speed limits, caution queues when there's none same with non existent road works or workforce in the road, etc etc.....I love driving but now the anxiety it causes I'm always exhausted upon reaching my destination or returning home.....also traumatised from seeing regular horrendous accidents...

@@NerdInMotion23 It would be a very nervous moment for sure, after I got experience in 7.5T I instantly saw heavy vehicles in a totally different light and have gone out of my way to give HGV's extra room since, its got to be an endless stream of cars doing idiotic things and has to be a stressful job.

I have to wonder why you seem to have ended up with such a bad implementation of this in the UK. We have virtually identical dynamic signage in the Netherlands, but to my knowledge they're not causing any issues there, and actually _have been_ safer because it allows them to close off lanes when accidents occur in the middle of the road (with plenty of advance warning signs). But to my knowledge we don't try to repurpose hard shoulders as driving lanes either... which is in and of itself a pretty bizarre idea to me.

@@crytocc because as always we don't do things properly and bureaucrats get involved it all goes down hill trying to get jobs for the boys. In the UK the public sector is notoriously officious and lazy.

Smart motorways are like our bike lanes, someone high up has seen it when on holiday i would imagine, thought it would be a great idea here, and bring it over half done without actually looking at the bigger picture, either that or as so many speed camera's popped up on the motor ways when these were brought in and with the amount of slow downs for no actual reason it was purely a money maker.

@@MrLeejohn02 if I remember correctly there was some statistics that the M62 fines had covered the cost of the smart motorway section in a matter of months.

25 years hgv driver! Smart motorways are lethal! You have a legal obligation to get upto speed and merge in!how....how do u get to 60mph from those breakdown areas?
@NerdInMotion23

Exactly! It's impossible my truck takes over 30 seconds to get to 56mph.

@NerdInMotion23 I was m5north, truck overtaking me. Car in breakdown area! It was daytime. Car had no lights on, no hazards, no brake lights on! Idiot decided to pull out 50m from me! They just dawdled out without a care in the world! Horn, lights flashing...car just didn't know or understand the danger! I had to bang on the brakes, pull into lane 2! I was down to 20mph!!!! Car then cut off a car as it pulled into lane 2(middle lane hog) for no reason! Then car put hazards on!! It's a shame we have to share the roads with uneducated drivers! I think to use the motorway, it should be an extra driving qualification! I believe every driver should drive a unit, brake. Then do the same with a fully loaded trailer! I bet every hgv driver, 1st time they brake from 50mph for a junction while 44t, shits themselves as it won't slow down fast enough!

@@terrystratford1235 Yes definately educate and let all drivers experience all types of vehicles. Growing up I started on a bicycle, then motorbikes and all makes and models of cars...once a bus and a couple of times small vans. I've not had a go at hgv driving yet...not sure I ever want to, they look big and scary...

@nixswatson same here! I passed bike, car, c2 and c1 1st time! Anyone who isn't scared of 44t isn't the type to drive them! It's good to have respect for hgv! Artics are easier to drive and manoeuvre than ridged trucks! Give it ago! You maybe surprised on what u can and can't see, blindspots! There's so much more to being a hgv driver than just driving! Try it! If your youngish....it can be a great career! Deliver food, easy life!

You haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. I work on the motorways, I work In traffic management and I drive the truck with the cones on, the whole point on the refuse area is if your broken down or for an emergency. If you can’t get out the refuse area you call national highways and they will put a big fat red x on the hard shoulder and most probably call the police or the wombles to assist. The reason people get hurt or die on smart motorways isn’t because of the way it functions it’s simply because people do not read the gantry’s. I’ve seen it, I see it first hand everyday. And you so called✌🏻professional truck drivers ✌🏻are the worst for it. As I said I drive the truck with the cones on, with the big flashing arrow that goes up 5m above the truck that tells you to move over to the next lane, the big cushion that folds down to take the impact of a vehicle hitting us, do you know what vehicles is mostly involved with crashing into the back of the trucks? HGVS, 99.99% is trucks because you ignore the signals and signs, so all this rubbish about smart motorways are dangerous is compete and utter garbage. It’s you drivers are to blame.

@@XLbullyZeus have you watched video by the other RU-vidrs. Links on the description. I also don't disbelieve you in their video you see an HGV just roll through a sign. The issue is you're not getting the red x anymore to get on when you call highways.
