Hilariously this is similar to a character I made for a campaign once. He was a half orc barbarian who had been conned into thinking he the world's greatest wizard. The result was that all of his barbarian actions were renamed after spells, since that's how he thought the spells worked and no one wanted to be the one to tell him since it made him so happy to be a real wizard.

for me it seams like why "fred" likes to use paladins is that it easyer to bully with for A: a pally with a great sword is a lot harder to deal with then a rogue with a short sword at best so there WAY more intimidating to fight. and B: if some one dos fight back well (Strength + self healing + spells + a good to high AC = likely to win in PVP) and with 'gray beard' DM the gods at the time don't care what he/she did or do.

@@dkronikmusic If you don’t discharge the spell in the round when you cast the spell, you can hold the discharge of the spell (hold the charge) indefinitely. You can continue to make touch attacks round after round. You can touch one friend as a standard action or up to six friends as a full-round action. If you touch anything or anyone while holding a charge, even unintentionally, the spell discharges. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates. Alternatively, you may make a normal unarmed attack (or an attack with a natural weapon) while holding a charge. In this case, you aren’t considered armed and you provoke attacks of opportunity as normal for the attack. (If your unarmed attack or natural weapon attack doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, neither does this attack.) If the attack hits, you deal normal damage for your unarmed attack or natural weapon and the spell discharges. If the attack misses, you are still holding the charge.

@@wellhello5098 thats actually the complete opposite of what I've come to understand. I thought that when you hold the spell you, for one, use your reaction to later trigger the held action, and two , if you don't trigger the held spell, it fizzles and you also lose the spell slot you used to originally cast the spell. Either way is not something that can be held in perpetuity What source book is your way from?

@@MsKeylas IK it's a year old comment, but UA Oath of Treachery fits with that behavior. Played one myself who was a CE shithole who's backstory is they've hopped from various criminal organizations, getting what they can before bailing to another, and another, and so on. The party just happened to be the most recent one she latched onto like a parasite. Her death came when many of the people she screwed over decided to collect their dues and get some sweet, sweet revenge. The party (whom barely tolerated her because they were using her just as much as she was using them) decided enough was enough, and it was time for her to face the consequences of her past deeds. T'was a fun time and everyone had a blast with it. (The party knew ahead of time what kind of character I was going to be bringing in, and we worked together to where it was "yes, she's a bitch and is going to 'use' the party" but she won't actually sabotage anything serious and is gonna still be a team player as far as the game actually goes.)

I once had a party where i was basiclly the one showing the reins to the others since the dm and me were the only ones used to play the game and the other 4 were all newbies. The dm told me we needed a spellcaster with battlefield control and i was happy to make that because i love wizards and sorcerers. However when i saw the party's characters we also needed a frontline fighter. So i came up with kanuna. A tortle divination wizard ancestral guardian barbarian. This combo should never work but somehow it did. The ac is 19 (we had a homebrew rule where you could stack racial ac bonus and class ac bonus ontop of eachother) and at lvl 5 i had 69 hp. My stats from top to bottom were 16-16-16-14-14-12. This guy was a beast in the field, absorbing hits like a sponge and dealing damage like crazy. If they did manage to hit him i still had shield to still block it so my total ac could be 24. He is still my favourite character to play next to my all time first character. How this combo works we still dont know but whenever i get a chance to throw him into a oneshot the dm knows he has to up the difficulty because i will wreck everything XD
@Dmaster2k
@Dmaster2k 2 года назад
How is 19 AC stacking both the tortle and barbarian ac bonuses? tortle have 17 flat, and according to your stats your barbarian ac would be 16. If you were stacking them then your AC should have been 23 without a shield, and 25 with it (or 20 and 22 if no dex). This seems a bit made up tbh.

I don't wish to speak for others, but as a player who started under a magnificent D.M. who had Greybeard's attitude towards things, (& who is working on learning the ins & outs of the game in hopes of one day becoming one myself,) this is exactly what I think most laissez-faire D.M.'s HOPE will happen to problem players - there's no need for the D.M. to play babysitter in petty squabbles when characters proudly handle problems themselves, & that lets the D.M. focus on storytelling, world-building, plot twists, & cool custom quests which integrate the characters' unique ideals, flaws, & backstories. BRAVO et GLORIA! May many learn from your example!

Before I say anything else, I just wanted to say that that was a FANTASTIC way to deal with a bully I think one of the most fun things about D&D is that when you choose your scores, there is no law saying you have to have certain stats. I mean, sure, if you wanted to play something like a rouge for example, you would most likely want high dexterity. However, think of the interesting ways you can make the rouge unique with having a skill higher than dex. Strength rouge- Intimidating as f**k and could be a good body guard Constitution rouge- Deadly killer that is harder to kill. Just picture that Intelligence rouge- You don’t even have to play arcane trickster. You can be really good at learning new information as a spy Wisdoms rouge- While it’s hard for people to perceive you, you can perceive others and be able to read people like a book Charisma rouge- Honestly I think this is just really fun! Beings so good at persuasion, deception, and intimidation can make you scary to deal with outside of combat D&D is one of the most fun ways to create unique characters, even if they “logistically” don’t make sense. It doesn’t break the rules or the game if one or your stats is higher than the one recommended to your class. It can get boring playing the same thing over and over again. Having a charismatic barbarian, a dexterous paladin, or even a strong wizard can be insanely fun and inspire creativity!

I ran a game years back. 1st edition. We had a fighter that was like that, always demanding to be first at the treasure, intimidating others, etc. One time, our halfling theif had just unlocked a chest and as soon as he did the fighter said "move , shorty" and knocked him out of the way violently. He took a few points of damage. The fighter was checking the treasure when the theif suddenly said "I go for a backstab". At that, the fighter said that he was looking behind himself. I said "no, you're not. But everyone else can see it." He started off confident that one of the other three party members would stop him. That didn't happen. Both the fighter and theif had been pretty banged up in the prior battle so the backstab took him down to something like 6 HP. Before he could recover his sword the theif took those, saying "never insult a halfling" He got seriously indignant about players attacking players. I told him that he'd started the fight and the little guy finished it, end of story. He stormed away. Never saw him again. A great pleasure for both of us, I'm sure. For years after we joked about it, and "never insult a halfling" became one of our running gags.

Reminds me of the time I was playing a muscle wizard in 3.5; we all used pictures printed off the internet for our characters, and mine was Master Roshi. I had the entire party confused about what exactly I was because I was constantly stoned, created a "smoke screen" to distract guards ala History Of The World Part 1, and was constantly selling "medicinal herbs" that dulled pain and promoted healing, but they eventually decided I was a comic relief wizard when I let loose a few cantrips. I usually sat out battles, acting as support to heal wounded party members, or just distracting enemies with my antics, only directly intervening in battle when absolutely necessary to prevent a PC from being killed or badly wounded. Everyone just rolled with it, and they loved my character, especially once they started getting hints that his jolly, happy-go-lucky attitude and funny substance abuse were a coping mechanism for a past trauma, which apparently involved working at an academy for paladins. Then we met the big bad's second-in-command, who it turned out was a fallen paladin who had slaughtered most of the students at said academy and left my character, a member of the faculty, as one of the only survivors. I immediately challenged him, and the DM informed me that at my level I stood no chance of beating this guy. "I'll make a bet with you: if you can withstand a single punch from me, I'll let you kill me here and now." The party kept trying to talk me out of it, but when I persisted they let me do it, though they declined to get involved since they'd all be slaughtered fighting an end-of-story level boss. The DM shrugged and, in character, said if that's what I wanted then that's what I'd get. I shrugged off my wizard cloak, swapped out my character image for Super Master Roshi, and then said "one punch, let's see if you can handle it." Five minutes of rolling dice later, the right hand of the big bad exploded into a pink mist from a single punch. The DM demanded to see my character sheet, and I showed him, plus all the rule books, and reminded him that he'd looked at all this and approved when I created my character. I also commented "now you know why I sit out most battles and only do the bare minimum; I gotta let everyone else have fun." The DM reluctantly approved of it, made a dramatic show of throwing half the contents of his story binder in the trash can now that one of the major bad guys who would drive the plot was dead, and the campaign went on. After that, my muscle wizard was less of a stoner and less of a comic relief character, growing more quiet and contemplative, and slowly transitioned to the role of mentor to the rest of the party, still obviously suffering PTSD but satisfied at having avenged his students, and his excuse for only doing the bare minimum in battle was "I gotta give you kids room to grow; if I do everything for you, then what happens when I'm gone?" They loved it. That was a super fun campaign. It also featured the world's tallest (5'11") halfling, thanks to a newbie player misreading things, and his wife played a barbarian with intelligence so low that her character communicated mostly in incoherent screaming and hitting things.

Funny thing is you can absolutely make this work long term if you plan it out well too. For example, you could take Fighting Intiate on a Bladesinging Wizard to get the Unarmed Armed Fighting Stlye and actually have a pretty badass wizard that strikes down enemies with a combination of magic and their bare hands. Heck, if you really want to lean into that, throw a couple levels of a Monk multi-class in there.

Story of mine: I've been running my campaign for almost 2 years. Sometime a couple months ago, I moved my game to Foundry VTT because I found it much more manageable than Roll20's pay x a month for basic features. So when moving character sheets from one VTT to the other, I started reading through my party's character sheets. The wizard has more strength than the barbarian. I asked my party's wizard on why, he said, "no one ever asks me to help with intense labour, because everyone thinks I'm weak" Literally, I have a wizard who has a more chiseled six pack than the samurai barbarian.

@All Things Dnd. This give me a character idea (not optimized, just fun). It could actually even work, I just requires some lucky rolls for attributes. 3 lvl in wizzard, rest in monk, open hand. Percival was always a good student, discplined, paid attention to his teachers. Good grades and a talent for magic got him into wizzarding university. There he studied arduously. He had a roomate, Xiang Li, an exchange student from the eastern edge of Faerun. Xiang always seemed to move naturally, like a cat, we maximum efficiency. Never made a single step that was not necessary or would not help him get where he wants. Once at a party, Xiang was threathened by an Orc. Percival was ANGRY. Altough he studied books, he was far from a pushover. Quite the opposite, he played all kind of sports, lifted weights and had a general active life a young boy, and a young adult has. He rose from the chair and prepared a big firebolt in one hand, and the mother of all punches in his other hand. But there was no need. Xiang moved the bare minimum to avoid the Orc's punch. No flinching, no head bobing like Percival has seen in bar fights. Just a well calculated step sideways. In the next second the orc was hit.. with a blur. Xiang Li switched to battle speed, this was no longer play fight in a gym. Percival has seen only about 2 strikes, one to the liver and a weird slap to the base of the skull. The rest was not traceable. The orc collapsed to the ground but otherwise, not harmed in any way. Percival also sensed something.. he first THOUGHT it was arcana.. but it was not. It was clearly a magical energy, but something much more focused and efficient than the complicated "schools of magic" he was studying. It was raw, elemental. The very fabric of magic, where the source and nature of it is meaningless. He immediatly asked Xiang to teach him how to fight.

It was fun playing with the Barbarian watching the Wizard swing a Greatsword dealing 8d6+3 damage to whatever I happened to drop on. It got better when I learned Fly and could just straight up go 60 ft in the air for free if I wasn't within 5 ft of the enemy.

Once had a barbarian who liked to dress as a wizard. Robes, pointy hat, even a (empty) spellbook sticking out of his pack. Even specialized in the quarterstaff and pretended to lean heavily on it, as if he were physically weak or lame. His logic was that most enemies will go for spellcasters first, so why not let his enemies come to him instead of having to chase them down? Many a foe ran up expecting an easy kill, only to be beaten into bloody paste. Worked beautifully as a tank.
