I was watching a podcast the other day and the guest (whose name I can't remember right now for some reason) was saying that habits are made to take out of our lives any negotiation with ourselves. What he meant by that is that when you get into the habit of doing something every day, you stop thinking about whether you should do it and how and when, but you just do it. To me that's more powerful than making plans and trying to stick to it. Just telling yourself "every day I'll work out/write/practice Italian/whatever", even if you struggle at first or you don't do it well, the sheer simplicity of daily repetition is far more efficient at accomplishing great things in the long run. That's what the French writer Gustave Le Bon summarized in saying "great accomplishments are rarely the results of great efforts, but more often the results of repeated small efforts".

This was really down to earth, I like how you didn’t try to peddle any secret formula for doing things because the secret formula is just doing it. Thanks for sharing, just subbed ❤️

I've been watching your videos for a while now and I finally noticed how small your viewer-count is. I am stunned. Thank you for what you do here. I have found it helpful.

It sounds you've already got a very good handle on things, so maybe this won't be of much help to you, but I'd figure there's no harm in sharing some ideas, and you can decide what to do with the information yourself. So the best way I've come to understand what 'motivation' is comes from how Dr. K explains it. He has a video on motivation, if you ever feel like making the time for it, but it sounds like you don't, so I'll just leave a couple highlights here: Motivation has nothing to do with behaviour; it is a purely mental thing. Motivation is simply the ability to hold a thought steady in the center of your mind and keep it there for an extended period of time. (Which is why "Just do it!" kind of advice doesn't work for most or many people, because that's external stuff; it's not motivational. It might help create a spark for you to light motivation with in your mind, but it's not motivation in and of itself. Motivation has to come from within, and it's essentially steady focus on one thing.) It has nothing to do with enjoyment or non-enjoyment; simply holding a thought without displacing it. This can be practiced through doing meditation (namely focusing techniques, such as 'fixed point gazing'), which will literally make you more productive. "So long as you can hold the thought and don't displace it, you can do the thing you're motivated about." Anxiety is one really powerful thing that bumps motivation out of your mind. Procrastination is another great example of a thought-bumping process. It's literally your mind TRYING (and failing) to motivate you to stay focused on a particular thing - and you're actively pushing that thought away (with other thoughts/distractions). You can't HOLD multiple thoughts in your head, you can only hold ONE thought at a time. (They might be rapidly bumping each other, but that's not the same as HOLDING several at a time.) Wanting or not wanting something is also not motivation. You can be motivated to do a task or duty that you don't want to do, because it's simply just a matter of keeping that thought steady in your mind. Again, you seem like a very motivated person already, so I don't know how useful any of that is to you, but I thought maybe if I made you aware of it you could become even more motivated and make greater progress in what you want to do. I wish you all the best in your writing and other endeavours!

That IS very helpful. I've never thought of motivation or procrastination in quite that way before. Thank you!
