Hi Larry great song.... i come from Birkenhead i left 1985 when i was 26....i live in Sutton greater London .... I Lived in Clarendon street from 1958 til 1971...
Only just heard this. Absolutely brilliant, Larry! I was born at St Cath's, lived in Tyne Street for a while (next to Birkenhead North and Ilchester Square) then moved to Moreton where I lived until getting a "proper Job" in 1974. With your permission, I intend to introduce some of the Warrington and area folk clubs to this.
Absolutely love this Larry. Havn't heard it for years, used to be someone at Butlins Pwhelli who sang this in the early 90's, I'd never heard it before then but couldn't get it out me head lol! Funny enough we are going to Blackpool next week & going to the Bloomfield Club & who should be on the bill on one of the nights but Nicky Newsome who wrote the original version.
Somebody just sent this to me, what a flood of memories😉. I used to go cockling with me Dad, we'd get the train from Birkenhead North to Moreton Shore and I can remember Dad telling me we had to be careful because the tides could cut you off, a kid named Tony Devlin was drowned out there.. Then you had to walk back to Moreton Station with a big bucket of cockles and when we got home Dad would but in a bowlful of oats to make them open up. Deelishus! We used to live in Ilchester Square #114.In our block were The Crokers, The Sands, The McKays, The Ainsleys and the Colleys. The Blood Tub in the old flats was where we were sent to get your Dad home for dinner. We'd get fish and chips from Barnes on payday and I remember Mr Whitty had a shop on the corner where you could buy a tupenny lucky bag... He had a vicious dog named Major which occasionally got loose and terrorised the entire square . Anyone who lived there will remember Pemberton's the greengrocer and Loudon's the sweet shop on Stanley Road or Lydiate's on Hoylake Road. Poor but happy times.
