I grew up in Florida and we grew these in our back yard. Dad would never cut one until he could shake it and hear the seeds rattle inside. Then we would eat it the same day we first heard it rattle.

Three easy ways to tell if it is ripe. First: it will have a more yellowish color not green like an unripe one. Second: the end where the stem is broke off from will be yellow around it. Last: the smell at the end of the stem peice or around the melon should smell sweet.

I wanted to thank you for responding to my request. I really love cantaloupe, but have hesitated to buy them because of my last few experiences. I think it's about time for me to go out and buy one now.

Great video on deciding if the cantaloupe is right but you didn't mention you have to wash a cantaloupe fairly before you ever sliced into it you can wash them with warm water and I use just a tiny a bit of antibacterial soap or you can put a cap full of Clorox unscented into a sink full of water make sure that it sinks down and completely covered for 5 minutes you have to disinfect the outside of it somewhat

@YourProduceGuy That's terrific ! Here in Ontario Canada we have a great recycling program where we have "Blue bins" that we put our cans, bottles, plastic, paper, cardboard etc which is picked up at the curb wkly by the city...also a Green bin to put compost materials plus bones, cooked food wastes that are somehow composted/recycled by the city. Ea. spring the city offers free compost at a designated spot - just bring your own containers & shovels..they also have mountains of mulch for free

@YourProduceGuy Recyclables are picked up wkly here & garbage every other wk. We are only allowed 4 bags of trash per pickup...thats 8 bags/mo. Even our street corners have multi-bins for recyclables in addition to trash...sep bin for cans/bottles, paper/carboard. It all helps. Its great to see people today into growing food in their yards rather than grass. Brings us closer to Mother Earth & responsible for our environment...great hobby too. I have 2 composters in my yard plus a worm bin.

I have read several times when a cantaloupe is picked it stops ripening. I find this not to be the case. I let it ripen for 3 days at least. When it feels soft I cut it open and it is so sweet and juicy..

I bought a nice yellow melon here in the UK .Dry firm with no signs of ripening ,but I do not want to leave Until it goes bad. I tried the stalk end and the root Cantaloupe. end and no signs of ripening , How would you know when to eat it . (Is this because they are transported over here when they are under ripe , to last longer in transit .) Had one before ,not nice when hard, unripe, with no flavour .and they take that much longer to ripen ? . Many thanks E M

Yep... that big one sure looks like a musk melon to me. If my dad, grandfather, great grandfather and other relatives from Rocky Ford, Colorado would see this video.... they would be laughing their heads off! One of the pieces of folklore in Am. is to "smell" a cantaloupe for quality.... funny to watch the old ladies in the store do the smell test. Good cantaloupe = one that has a tint of green on the skin and a "clean slip" where attached to the vine. Smelling a cantaloupe .. laugh!

Hello 🤗 I'm new to your site. Came in looking for a bit of help. My last 2 cantaloupes were hard, rubbery from the rim inward. I just took notes, so hopefully I'll get a good one next time. I got a laugh when you mentioned the vanilla ice cream in the center. I grew up having it this way in the summer. Grew up along the VA beaches on the Atlantic Ocean...summers got hot! Oh, this was so refreshing. I'm now using a couple spoons of Vanilla Bean, honey laced organic yogurt. Ohhhh, so good. I have a quick question....you were mentioning the sizes, does the size of the cantaloupe affect it's taste any? And I'm in total agreement with you, support your local growers, farmer's market and join a co-op ( not a big chain, groups of farmers owned). There's where the best tasting foods going to be 😊🍉🍓🫐🍇

I do have a question if you be so kind to answer. If you pick a cantaloupe and it is not ripe what can you do with it? Will it ripen on its own? I was thinking maybe taking some of the oversized gourds and using them as bowling pins and using the cantaloupe as a ball. Do you have a better solution?

I cut open a cantaloupe like the largest one on your video, I guess a homegrown local one. It was refrigerated for about a week after buying it from grocery store. I cut it open and there was no juice whatsoever and the rind was quite thick. It was not skinny to the outer shell. Does this mean it was likely under-ripe, not developing juices yet? thanks

If a cantaloupe is very watery when you cut it, is it good? Like the juice runs out of it...

@YourProduceGuy

I would guess that your hypothesis is correct. A lot of the good old stuff has been bred out of our current fruits and vegetables in favor of longer shelf life qualities. I know that you can find sweet fruit without finding all the signs of ripeness, but that 'smells like a cantaloupe' works every time you find it. Room temp is the key to that. Refrigeration will keep you from smelling that smell every time, and so many stores display most of their product now under refrigeration that it makes it hard to find that smell. Find all the signs of ripeness you can, and then go for it!

Hey cool, I've seen a few of your videos now while just checking how to check for ripeness, and I just heard in this one that you're from Utah. I'm from Utah as well in an adjacent city just south of Ogden. I'm relatively new to a healthy lifestyle and I've been trying to find a nearby outlet that sells bulk produce at a discounted price. Such as boxes of Banana's and such. Do you happen to know of any? Do you have any other recommendations for anything local to Ogden? Or any recommendations for having a more healthy lifestyle? Also, I just subscribed, thanks for all the info!
@YourProduceGuy
@YourProduceGuy 10 лет назад
How many people are you feeding? Boxes of bananas come in 40 lb increments. In any regard, I will tell you where I like to go to find great produce. Harmons has beautiful produce (Ogden, Roy, Farmington Station) but it is on the pricey side, so that's a treat. My go-to place these days is Rancho Market. They don't sell bulk, but they have some great sales on different items most every week. Other than that, you can find organic stuff, if that's what you want at Smith's and Good Earth on Riverdale Rd. Does any of that help? Thanks for watching.

I don't think Aldi exists in your area yet, but we are expanding to be coat-to-coast in the US by 2016 I believe. (I work for Aldi). If you ever get the opportunity to shopthere, you will be amazed at the produce prices. And it's the same stuff the other grocers have. Same farms, same brands. Just ridiculously low prices. Good luck with your healthier lifestyle!

the cantaloupes in the store arent cantaloupes. cantaloupes grow on the coasts of Europe the ones in the stores are rock melons which are why they have those lines the other type are musk melons which are practically the same thing but without lines real cantaloupes are about half to a quarter of the size of that i beleive and that big melon he had is most likely GMOwhich means genetically modified

My friend, I've worked in produce departments for 9 years (with a very recognizable, and trend-setting company), and I have to be honest…I have eaten many, many delicious cantaloupes in my time, and I teach customers how to pick ripe cantaloupes frequently, but I have almost NEVER smelled any sweetness coming from a cantaloupe (either conventional or organic, peak-of-season, or out-of-seaon), except for the ones my father used to grow…Again, I've had exceptionally sweet cantaloupes without any noticeable smell. Is this just a symptom of large-scale industrial agriculture (the fact that most melons I handle have been off the vine for quite some time, realistically)?
@YourProduceGuy
@YourProduceGuy 10 лет назад
Hello Austen, When I was working in the stores, we had never heard of the refrigerated table. Our wet rack was the only place we had refrigerated. When we would set out the melons, of course they would come to room temperature. When smelling melons for that 'sweet' smell, they have to be at room temp. Refrigeration kills that smell. So, in the modern department, you likely have your melons displayed on a cold table, thus the smell will not develop until those fruits warm up at home for the customer...assuming they don't pop them into the fridge right away. As for the modernization of the fruits (genetic selection, etc.) that could have an effect as well. The old heirloom varieties produce a wonderful aroma, while the hybrids, while impressive looking do tend to produce less of that sweet smell. Thanks for commenting!
@austentravis81
@austentravis81 10 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! Though my company doesn't merchandise them on a refrigerated table, the modernization of the fruit makes a lot of sense to me..I appreciate your insight...

fresh is always best ? quite amazing ! Lions (Lioness ) hunt and eat it immediately hardly is left out because hayenas are usually follow but TIGERS (Bengal) has strange hunting habit ! after she kills the prey , she drags it to tall grass or thick bushes where she hides the kill and eats for days even it is rotten.Tigress are usually shy and timid ,not as aggressive as lioness. Neither male lion nor tiger are good hunter. very clumsy and slow.
