When is it TOO MUCH? A World with too many Roller Coasters...

When is it too much??? Like, will there be a day when there are too many roller coasters, and the demand will dwindle down to barely a drip? For coaster enthusiasts, this is like talking about the apocalypse. How could I ever say such a thing, there being too many roller coasters? Well, it's an interesting concept for sure, one that we might have to deal with someday, maybe sooner than we’d hope...

I took a trip to Cedar point a few weeks ago, and after riding every coaster, one after another, they all start to kinda feel the same. I don't think that adding another big coaster there would really make the park much more special, they need some variety

This video has a lot of fair points but I can assure everyone that we will never reach this point. Old attractions will be replaced with new, and there is so much empty space with potential for rollercoasters all around the world. Many densely populated areas don’t even have one for hundreds of miles, and if they do it’s likely an SLC or kids coaster

It's possible for a park to have too many. A lot of Six Flags parks have multiple kiddie coasters, feels like that was done to artificially pad coaster counts. We'll ride them because we're enthusiasts, it's what we do. But if a park markets 20 coasters and has multiple kiddie coasters that are exact clones of each other, is that really needed? Or something like Discovery Kingdom only having 2 coasters not built as clones (3 non-clones operating because of modifications to V2, which barely ever runs)? Yea, it's possible.

I see a lot of impending ride closures in the next decade. We have a glut of rides that were built in the 90s and early 2000s coming to the end of their service lives, and I don't see a lot of these parks having the interest in keeping them around. Plus, add the high cost of steel with all of the wars going on, and I just don't see it. I can hope that some of the more iconic rides will be refurbed and saved, but places like Cedar Point are going to have to decide what should stay and what should go rather quickly. I love some Magnum, but how much longer can this ride last?

For me, cedar point needs a modern wooden coaster. After that however, I'm not sure what they should add.

I would love a B&M hyper but ik its not realistic because of the limited space

B and m hyper, just an out and back floater because they have every other layout style covered. But they have magnum already haha. A mack xtreme spinning coaster or a mack hyper/giga that is inversion focused so its nothing like magnum or steve or millennium

Coasters are a pretty dynamic market. When one thing goes out of style the industry invents a new way to thrill guests, companies change up their ride styles, old rides get replaced with exciting new ones, new parks emerge, old parks close, etc.

In RCT2, they have you build a theme park at Ayers Rock, The Amazon Rainforest, The Ruins of Aincient Rome, and Alcatraz.😂 that MIGHT be a little too much

There are already too many. Too many for me to feasibly be able to ride in one lifetime.

I have good reason to believe that most of the major US parks have already fully capitalized on their markets. Attendance is pretty stagnant across many of the major players for the industry. Also, these rides require an enormous staff of qualified mechanics and electrical controls specialists. That’s a big cost to consider on top of the price tag of the rides themselves.

I don't believe there will ever be too many coasters for this world. However, I do believe there can be a point where there's too many coasters for a single park. Case in point: Six Flags Great America. What do I mean by this? Really I just think the park has more than enough coasters that we just simply don't need one despite coaster enthusiasts wanting the "new B&M Dive coaster with 5 inversions" or something like that. But I'm worrying Great America might add one, and more until it completely destroys the theming. I like the park now, but I don't want to be all thrills like Great Adventure and Magic Mountain

Since people are becoming more mobile, they can just travel to different parks for new attraction experiences. Food and holiday festivals are easy to keep fresh for a 'home' park.

Magic Mountain should be done adding coasters after 21st coaster next year. They don't need anymore of them cuz they barely opperate all the 20 coasters at the same time, and when they do, it's their "beautiful" one train ops. SF knows that they're the favorite child and keeps finding their way to get new coasters every 2-3 years.

Obviously, this title is meant to grab attention but I see where you're going with this. It's not a question of if we will not want more coasters but if it will be worth it for the parks to keep adding more as opposed to refurbishing or replacing them. On a micro level it depends on the region and audience for a specific park but clearly there is some kind of breaking point where even if a park has the space they simply won't see the boost in ticket sales if they add more. My thought is that the general threshold is how many coasters can most people realistically ride in a day when the park is on the busier side. If in the future a park had 40 coasters that might seem cool to enthusiasts but obviously that isn't a collection that a casual vacationer can enjoy as part of a larger trip. However, the population of the USA (in the case of most of your viewers) and the population of planet earth continues to grow which just means longer lines. I think the solution is to increase the overall number of parks. It signals to the park goer that you have a resort complex that merits multiple days. It also makes the overall ride collection something easier to bite off and chew. WDW and Universal Orlando may be special cases but they still illustrate the point well. Everyone knows to schedule several days and break up their vacations by each park. If WDW was just one continuous expanding park then it would be WAY too much and a lot of people would leave feeling dissatisfied because they thought they could fit more in on that one day and instead they'd miss so much. Land is the real issue. It would be awesome to see some parks add a second gate. Here are a few that might be able to make it work. Dollywood could add another park in the area, though it might be tough to put it immediately next door. Same is true for SDC. BGW could probably do it. Kings Island could probably add a second park but they might have to split the current park in order for the new park to make sense and I don't know if they'd want to do that. Cedar Point could probably add a second park on the mainland as they planned to do years ago. Hersheypark could build a parking structure like Disneyland and use some of their massive parking lot and the surrounding area to make a second park. And frankly the Houston metro area to could support a multi park resort right now. I'd love to see parks move in this direction but it would be a very long term investment and a lot of parks seem to be driven by annual ROI and not have the patience for large 5-10 investments.

If BGW fans is right about 2025 Busch Gardens Williamsburg will have 4 launch coasters and 2 inverts albeit one is a family invert so multiple of the same type of ride are absolutely possible

I agree, I feel we plateaued in what roller coasters can do and what the human body can take. It's also impossible for a park to really shock guests with a new innovative ride. Coasters today are refined versions of older models but nothing really new.

I don't think Cedar Point needs newer rides, I think they need to work on the reliability of the rides they have.
