Some more points of interest. JFK's crew 'acquired' a 37mm Anti-tank cannon to mount on their boat. They found it to be effective enough to replace it with the 37mm autocannon from an Aircobra fighter. Which THAT proved so effective it became standard armament for every PT boat afterwards.
There's also the fact that the natives who rescued JFK were actually invited to his inauguration, but the island authorities decided that they were not "appropriate" enough and straight-up prevented them from going. It rather irks me off
@@craggleshenaniganseh JFK came to presidency when systematic racism was still pretty widespread, he made major strives in civil rights before and after his death. So even though they couldn’t be present he helped to ensure that it’d be more achieve-able in the future. He was huge on posterity and great at it.
I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.
The rescue of JFK and crew was entirly down to one Australian Coastwatcher Reg Evans and two Solomon Islander men, their job was to operate behind Japanese lines and report on enemy troop and naval movements by SW radio. He watched the sinking at night and sent two of his Solomon Islander men to investigate, they returned with the coconut and Reg passed the co ordinates on. Reg survived the war, so JFK entertained and thanked Reg personaly at the White House. Coastwatchers were spread across the Pacific and operated in secret until after the war. A total of 33 Australian and 22 Islander people Coastwatchers were killed by the Japanese. US Admiral of the Fleet, William F. Halsey, World War II "The Coastwatchers saved Guadalcanal, and Guadalcanal saved the South Pacific".
By this time, it had been discovered by the submarine service that the torpedoes were defective. At Pearl Harbor the navy would modify torpedoes as they came for service on the submarines. The PTs continued to use defective torpedoes throughout the war, only getting the replacement torpedoes near the end of the war.
In March 2015, in Tokyo, the "JFK: His life and legacy" exhibition was held, where Caroline Kennedy, JFK's daughter, and Kazuko Hanami, wife of the captain of the destroyer that collided with the boat, met and confirmed the partnership between Japan and the U.S. At the exhibition, a letter sent by JFK to Captain Hanami in 1953 and a photograph of him with a handwritten message "To Captain Hanami, late enemy and present friend" were displayed. The two had been corresponding, and letters of encouragement were sent from Captain Hanami and former crew members of the destroyer when JFK ran for president. This was featured in the official magazine "American View" of the U.S. Embassy in Japan.
Amagiri was the head of a column of four Japanese destroyers, Amagiri, Hagikaze, Arashi and Shigure. Hagikaze, Arashi, and Shigure opened fire on "two burning torpedo boats", which was just the halves of PT-109. Tameichi Hara was the captain of Shigure and wrote about the encounter in his book "Japanese Destroyer Captain".
I was shocked at the number of people who went into the Navy without knowing how to swim. They got remedial pool instruction and had to pass a very basic swim test
I enlisted in the Navy before HS graduation in 1976. And, in fact I was a good swimmer, yet had to sign an affidavit testifying as such. Nevertheless, all including myself of about 75 men in Company 334 @ Orlando were instructed in basic swimming, treading water & drown-proofing techniques. I recall about 7 or 10% had to march in the evening after classes & drills & report to the Swimming Pool for remedial lessons. I don't remember if the remedial class rejoined as a whole company for the advanced drown-proofing lessons; the hardest requirement being to have enough confidence & skill to not panic.
information from wikipedia: PT-109 was an 80-foot Elco PT boat (patrol torpedo boat) last commanded by Lieutenant (junior grade) John F. Kennedy, future United States president, in the Solomon Islands campaign of the Pacific theater during World War II. Kennedy's actions in saving his surviving crew after PT-109 was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer earned him several commendations and made him a war hero. Back problems stemming from the incident required months of hospitalization at Chelsea Naval Hospital and plagued him the rest of his life. Kennedy's postwar campaigns for elected office referred often to his service on PT-109.
Very touching moments for the late president. It's sad to see he was assassinated in such a way, but also good to see how he had always been a good leader, leading his men out of miseries and tragedies. His speech scenes in the story are all tear-inspiring. Thank you so much for the story, not to mention the resemblance of his look really bring it to the point!
It pisses me off to no end. JFK Did so much for our country. Only to be betrayed by his very own country, by the most corrupted officials... Had JFK lived on and not be assassinated?! Our country would be a paradise! Or at least the most ideal Nation in the world. But alas! We are now a laughingstock of a shell of a nation...(Sorry for the rant. But I needed to vent it all out.)
@@pacus123 covefe trump isn't the current president. Biden can at least speak a full sentence without having an mental glitch and rambling about how many times he has to flush toilets or how windmills cause cancer. Also, Biden doesn't quote Hitler.
@@plaguedoctor1173 Trump is old but he is fiercely patriotic, doesn't need a teleprompter, and he didn't serve almost half a century in politics like Corn Pop and his list of accomplishments is singular.
I knew that JFK had been a PT boat captain during WW2, but wow, I had never heard the full story! One story I still want to see here is about Danilo Marques Moura, a Brazilian pilot who was shot down and seriously injured in 1945, but decided to walk through Italy to the nearest Brazilian air base, almost 400km away.
I can’t tell you guys how much this page means to me. It brings back nostalgia from watching battle 360 on the history channel when I was home sick from school in the early 2000s. You guys encapsulate everything there is to love about history in a beautiful way.
Loved the Comic Book Treatment. Also, whilst in the US Navy JFK suffered an injury in the back. This often gave him troubles after the war. Later on, in the early '60s an Indian Doctor by the name of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was able to treat him successfully. Also, Dr. Roy was somewhat a Doctor with a legendary reputation and happaned to be the first chief minister of the Indian State of West Bengal. Thank You.
The Solomon Islander that found Kennedy named his son after him and then his son did the same thing. I seen an interview with them both on a die wreck channel on YT. True story
During JFK’s inauguration there was a parade that included a PT boat painted to look like PT 109; many of the surviving crew “manned the boat” as part of the celebration
I cannot begin to describe the satisfaction i felt for all the hard work you put in this video Yarnhub, well done. As always you outdid yourself. I really loved the perspective of the soon-to-be 35th president of the United States and the occational shift into the Japanese perspective. Kennedy proved himself to be a real soldier and man when he saved his men and those marines, may he rest in peace🫡.
This is one of my favourite warstories. I saw a documentary once where a relative of Kennedy visited the islands where this happened and talked to inhabitants and people who remembered this incident. Great documentary.
The voices have come a long way! They feel like movies! Also, requesting a story (sometime) on Heinrich Severloh, the german soldier who killed around a thousand Americans on Omaha, and later became friends with an American Chaplain who was shot 3 times on that very same beach, possibly from Severloh's own MG.
At the time of presidential campaign for JFK, Time wrongly reported the name of IJN's destroyer that sunk JFK's PT boat was Sweet Chestnut, but actually Heavenly Mist (Amagiri in Japanese).
Saved by one many island Coast watchers and natives who chose to remain behind and observe enemy activity.Code named Ferdinand after the Disney cartoon about a bull who sat among the flowers and refused to fight.Capture would have meant certain torture and cruel death hence Coast watchers were to remain silent and invisible in the jungles and report everything they saw and assist any allied (US and Australian) personnel in need. JFK was only one of many. His daughter is now the current US ambassador to Australia and hopefully will be for some time.
Much has been made in the media of Kennedy the hero who was the perfect commander and knew everything. But some of his crew told a different story about that time.
Anyone who manages to get T-boned by a destroyer obviously was not the best commander... I still can't wrap my head around this blunder. Did they forget they had a rudder? An engine?
I'm sitting in the basement at my workplace waiting for the tornadoes to blow by here in the Omaha area but at least I got a interesting video to watch while I wait.
the most perfectly placed war thunder ad ive ever seen lol I was just thinking, man I miss ripping the lil boats around in war thunder, god damn perfection o7

The Bofors 40 mm gun has a rate of fire of 120-160 rounds per minute (rpm) per barrel, depending on the speed at which four-round clips are loaded. The practical rate of fire is closer to 80-100 rpm because the rounds are fed into the breech from clips that need to be replaced manually. The rate of fire increases slightly when the barrels are closer to the horizon because gravity helps feed the top-mounted magazine. So yarnhub pls change :D
Fun fact: it’s irrelevant if the torpedoes hit or not. The specific version of torpedo those boats were using was ineffective. There was a design flaw in them that prevented detonation in the vast majority of cases, so any torpedoes that may have hit the ship certainly did not significant damage.
In Feb (2024) I had chance to dive the Aaron Ward which was a destoyer JFK served on prior to taking over PT 109. It was also the boat that delivered him to Guadalcanal. Even at 225' I got chills thinking the hatchway I was looking at was once walked through by JFK.
The animation just keeps getting more realistic. JFK had a thick Boston accent. There a couple of parts that may have been edited so you can tell the next YARN! JFK swam by himself hoping to find other ships using the shipping lanes. He swam out to a very small island that could not sustain them. S8 they went to a larger island. Probably the one depicted with the natives. I thought they ferried JFK to a coastal watch area? It takes me about an hour to do one mile in a calm pool. I also rhought his back was already weak? So many parts of the story make it seem more incredible with each telling.
the JFK voice actor needs to practice the JFK test phrase: For Supper I Want A Party Platter = Foah Suppah I, er uh, Want Ah _Pahty _*_PLATTAAAAAHHHHHH!!!_*
Hello from romulus Michigan brother thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventures through time and history thank you again brother
"It doesn't look like much, but she's got it where it counts." -Word! And I bet it would make point-2 past light speed, plus Jack probably made a few modifications himself. When the crew arrived Jack told them, "We're in a bit of a rush so if you'll get on board, we'll get going." 😆
I've loved Yarnhub for years and am so thankful for all that you make, but recently I've been missing the classic narration verses the added voice lines. Some voice acting is fine, but in the recent videos it's almost overdone and a bit cheesy. Maybe it's going for a different audience, but I prefer the Yarnhub narrated videos the best.
We take that on board. We think the lines really add value in such films as Midway from the Japanese perspective. We're still working out what is optimum.
When I was a child I believed the story about Kennedy being a war hero. Not anymore. How exactly did he allow his boat to get rammed by an enemy destroyer? His boat was obviously much smaller than a destroyer, yet somehow the Japanese detected their presence, but they couldn't detect the enemy bearing down on them. I believe Kennedy is personally responsible for the deaths and injuries suffered by his crew, and the inexplicable loss of his boat. I believe ther were no consequences because of his name, and that anybody else would have faced court martial.
Nice, but i think that the WW2 was not just about the Pacific Front, but also Eastern Front. There are more events and battles that you could use in your videos, like the battle of Reichstag or battle of Narvik. I appreciate your work guys anyway♥
To be fair the pacific was never shown like this before , it’s always just taught as Pearl Harbor and the Bombs, while Europe had all the coverage including the East
As a kid in elementary school l skipped classes an went to see JFK. He waved at me. My first year at university, I covered a congressional hearing chaired by RFK.
I got a story for you, my great uncle was in the 94th division. He was a supply guard during the last days in Europe before Germany surrendered he and a squad of his men went out to shoot some since they had use their rifle and Boot Camp. When they were shooting the cans about seven or eight, Germans came out the woods screaming don’t shoot. I have six kids. They don’t know who was more surprised the Germans were the Americans one guy in the squad actually went his pants. So they took the Germans prisoner and marched them back to base they were congratulated for capturing the Germans. They were also chewed out for going out like that. They never did it again again.
Another slam dunk video!! I love the content you guys put out, I’ve been subscribed since the beginning. If I could change anything about this video, it would have been the accent of Kennedy. Keep up the great work @YarnHub!
the only thing that miss in War Thunder ads is Yarnhub's decoration or at least Yarnhub's decal for War Thunder. C'mon Gaijin, you can give us more for Yarnhub fans
"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" - it means don't expect anything from your country while you are expected to sacrifice everything
My goodness. I had known about the PT 109 but not of the subsequent missions of the PT 59. Jack Kennedy would go on being a President of the USA in the early 1960's - one quite remarkable US PRESIDENT.
Sad story: JFK's, Joseph, older brother was expected to once become president, as it was their dad's dream. But Joseph was killed when his Consolidated PB41-Y was exploded in 1944. JFK then carried the dream and eventually became president 16 years after Jospeh's death.
