Let's hope the "students" don't have cause to ask someone why their fork is in their bottle. "Why did you put your fork in my bottle?" is odd, but not awkward. In Engrishu it could go in the direction of awk quite quickly. (Hey if you go back you go backward, if you go fore you go forward, if you head home you go homeward. So is not awkward going in the direction of awk? Only language I speak and English is a confusing mess!)

Aside from how funny your videos are, it's insane how fluent you are in English and Japanese at the same time glad I found you a few days ago and I'm probably gonna use your videos as a way to understand at least some Japanese myself. And you're stories from being an English Teacher are great and the way you act them out is a lot of entertainment and very humorous to watch. You also teach us a lot of great stuff about Japan that a lot of foreigners may not ever know and with your addition of humor that fits together so well.
@mordraug
@mordraug Год назад
Yeah, I think it definitely comes down to the way one acquires language. If you do it naturally through media, games, books etc. and comprehensible input and/or interact with people on the Internet (and real life if you can, or at least through Discord etc. ), it makes real difference to the artificial school system where what matters is just how well you memorise word answers for tests and then forget it because you barely see it again and speak this extremely unnatural language that is also explained to you unnaturally and in a confusing way, trying to force how your native language works onto said language instead of taking the language as its own entity with its own rules. Moreso when you are forced into it without having the passive understanding/vocab of the language yet through reading etc. The usual teaching system of languages is largely archaic nowadays (there are some schools that teach it naturally and in modern ways though), which is a shame as it does more to discourage people from the beauty of languages instead of motivating them. You spend 5+ years with the language and end up remembering nothing like I had with German and Spanish. English I largely acquired through natural means of consuming and being in the langauge, well the school at least gave me the most basic foundation from which I could begin this step, but the problem is that schools keep being stuck on the basic level of explaining unnaturally and forcing everything for years instead of a few weeks/months (level 0 and 1) instead of going forward to Level 2 (natural input and consuming/being in the language). Yeah, the natural way is quite more painful at first, but it quickly starts getting better and easier as time passes by if you put in the work/time consistently.
@nangbaby
@nangbaby Год назад
@@mordraug I dunno. For me I have never been able to learn another language just by hearing it repeatedly, because it's all completely unintelligible. For me, the structure is necessary to underatand what is being communicated. Then again, I have never been able to progress to passive understanding, either through immersion or instruction, but that's another matter.
@mordraug
@mordraug Год назад
@@nangbaby yeah, that is why it is not done just through listening, certainly not passively. Passive "immersion" will not get one far if there is no active effort and at least generally comprehensible, natural content being consumed. That comprehensibility is important because indeed, if you cannot understand anything at all and have no visual or other cues that help you crack the code, it is as if you stared at a blank wall, outside of making the brain get used to the sounds of the languagez that is a pointless endeavor. So it is why you begin by consuming easy, even child-like content (but there exist things that adults can enjoy and are still quite simple). Structure indeed is very important too and I agree there fully, but like Cure Dolly said, it is a helper, not the end-means. And it depends also on the quality of the explanation of said structure. Because if the structure is explained by forcing one's native language onto the targer language structure and how it works, it may lead to frustration, if not utter confusion and misunderstandings about said structure of the language (instead of explaining it as it is in reality in that language and using natural language to explain it as its own thing), which unfortunately some general bilingual textbooks do. Not saying that there is no use in such books, but it should definitely not be the only source and way of acquiring as is done at most schools. It is there to help to understand so that one can then consume (and later interact in) the pure, native and natural language via active effort of consuming media, books, games, videos etc. and via talking with other people in the language and being in the language and using it daily actively. Those who expect to get magically good at a language through just passuvely absorbing it will not get far, but that can be a useful bonus when one is busy and has other things to do since it is at least something, which is why in the beginning it is encouraged to listen to as much of the language to get the idea how it sounds and for the brain to get used to it even if not understanding. But otherwise, one should always go for primarily effortful and active consumption of generally comphrehensible content and general interaction (acquisition) of said language. Passive listening gets more useful as one gets better as if they understand without much effort already, it is much easier to notice new things in it automatically. But alone it is not very useful. It is like memorising 10 000 words...it is pointless if one does not engage in the natural language and context. That is why it is good to take the dive as soon as one can. And even to go monolingual as that forces one to put real active effort into it, but will be more taxing so one needs motivation. It is really difficult at first, but if one keeps it up, it slowly starts getting better. Our brains are incredible machines that work on problems all the time subconsciously.
@nangbaby
@nangbaby Год назад
@@mordraug My brain must work differently from other people, because even something that is comprehensible to other people isn't comprehensible to me if it's presented in another language. It could be as simple as two words with all the necessary context and I wouldn't get it if I weren't already taught some of the basics of the language formally. To me, even something as simple as Muzzy is a wall of gibberish unless I've been separately taught the language. It's only if someone else points something out that I notice a pattern (which is why I need to be taught), but on my own it's just static and I learn nothing from static.

A lot of the student stuff sounds like it happens mainly due to cultural differences. In what I assume is most of the western world (have seen this in a handful of countries myself and many more anecdotally) it would be very normal when learning/teaching a language to be either straight up told what a swear word means, it's use in context and it's closest equivalent word in your own language as it's understood that they're a part of language, the students know their own words anyway and they are *going* to come up. The other way I've seen is to bluntly acknowledge it at it's face "this is a swear word" and then to hear something like "so we are not going to cover it and I don't want to hear it in my classroom" then depending on if the teacher likes you or not "so you're going to have to look it up at home/yourself". In my experience teachers mostly want to do something closer to the first example specifically because it's interesting and prevents exactly these situations, and the latter situation only normally happens due to school policy/administration mandating it.
