The Netherlands team was one of the best, if not the best then. They only lost to Brazil (with Ronaldo & Ronaldinho) in the semi-finals of the 1998 world cup, on Penalties after a 1-1 draw.
It was this friendly spain saw and started underating the super eagles before we beat them in the 1998 world cup...but nethlands beat us this day 5-1 no be small thing.
Great memories - to see 2 teams going at it like Real Men. No time wasting, no rolling around after a hard tackle, no requests for ref to issue yellow cards,- just playing hard and fast for the LOVE of the Game.Beautiful.❤
This was the beginning of demise of the Eagles once we no longer had Yekini! The team could not or struggled to score goals!Yekini would have had a hat trick in that game!I never knew Seedorf played wing back or right winger!I only remembered him as a midfield general at Ajax , Madeid and Milan! The Dutch showed "Total Football" in this game!
This was in the run up to the 1998 World Cup. Preparations were characterized by poor planning and player-indiscipline, and the team was given a roasting in this match. Yekini was part of the team, but was clearly past his peak. Kanu would eventually have his heart problem and not make the team to the World Cup. We would later play other warm up matches, losing 1-0 to Germany and 3-0 to Yugoslavia, among other prep matches. However, at the World Cup proper, the team shocked even their most ardent supporters (myself inclusive) by defeating Spain 3-2 in their opening match, and later qualifying from a group that also included Bulgaria and Paraguay. Equally shockingly, they fell 4-1 at the second round to a relatively poor Danish side. The Danes out-thought and out-worked the Eagles, and richly deserved their win. By that match, visions of glory had distracted the Eagles, and rather than focus on Denmark, the boys had trained their thoughts on Brazil, which was the next match. Rufai’s goalkeeping against Denmark was shocking. The entire team was totally not at the office on match day. For this match though, it must be noted that Holland was clearly one of the best teams in the world that year. They would eventually make it to the semi-final of the World Cup, and were only eliminated on penalties by Brazil after drawing 1-1 after extra time. There was nothing to choose between they and Brazil. In this match though, they met a Nigerian team that did not take the match seriously. The score would have been different under other circumstances. Though I still feel the Dutch were the better team, a 5-1 score line certainly flatters them!
Please this Nigerian team were outplayed & out classed. I am so ashamed honestly. What was Peter Rufai doing in the goal post? 😅 We were just playing without a purpose in our final 3rd. And I saw we played without an outright striker a pure number 9. Where was Yekini?
Bro you're just that one person who have just said what I'd wanted hear. For goodness sake, these guys really messed with us in this pitch Jesus christ
No body is talking about the Netherlands team play, pass accuracy and effective tactics against Super Eagles (SE). Bunch of the SE passes were to the wrong side every little time in front of goal, the team play wasn't great for us, apart from Jay Jay's passes no other good passes to penetrate the Ned's strong defence. Most of the problem then still exists in the SE today, African football needs alot attention from the grassroots 😢😢😢
...thank you, @firemanvisual. I am a big fan of Jay-Jay, but it is so obvious that these two individuals were on different levels here - yet we continue to crow about Jay-Jay's skills, even when they consistently fail to produce the killer ball. We don't like to discuss it, but there is a good reason no single top team signed him. After all, what is the point of showmanship if there is zero efficiency or tactical nous?
very true even with yekini Nigeria was nowhere close to this classy dutch team..okocha too was skillful but compared to seedorf he was he was just a class below
Our game was okay especially after okocha came on. However our defence left a lot to be desired. They kept tearing us apart through the wings and there was no tactical change from the coaches to curb that..
Seedorf isn't talked about alot. I wonder why that is. This guy is a legend already. He can play anywhere on the football pitch and produce class for 90 mins.
Dutch football in its prime full o superstars. Played with high intensity and techniques. This team should have won France 98. Great game too from Super eagles of Nigeria. Amokachi was forcing through an injury
That was the golden era of football. A lot of national teams were overloaded of great players. This Dutch team is my favorite team ever. I don't think Messi and Cr7 would have thrived in this era.
This wasn't prime Orange boys. The 70s team spearheaded by Cruyff takes that title followed by the 80s team of Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten. This team comes third.
Personally I never saw the 70s team play and only highlights of the 88 European Champions team. 90s was a great era with speed, technique and physical defenders
Make una Dey deceive una self 😂 😂 how many complete pass Okocha deliver unlike seedorf? The difference is clear! I no say Baba no sabi play ball ooo.. but the thing far from each other..
I watched this game live, I can't forgive Seedorf for what he did to Nigeria. This game is among the 3 friendlies Nigeria played just weeks before France I998. We played German, Holland and I can't remember the last one but I think it was Yugoslavia.
It was against Yugoslavia. We lost woefully 3-0. That Abiodun Baruwa back pass😂😂😂. We lost other games to Deportivo La Corona 5-1 and 4-0 loss to Compostella both club sides in Spain. Infact we lost all friendly games we played enroute to the world cup
@@DreamteamCarlo I am aware of all of this.. but that team had mostly Dutch players on arsenal..to me that’s stacked.😂 plus I know Kanu was on that team because he was one of my favorite players.
@@darkodarko147una just like every opportunity to discredit jay, Holland were dominant and were clearly better team jay jay individual brilliance still stood out, Holland was in their prime
My first thought was they were simply unlucky. But if you take a closer look, the 90s-2000s was the best era in football history. What does this mean? Competition was insane. Every great historical nation was filled with superstars. And even smaller nations like Turkey, Czech Republic, Ireland, Greece, Romania etc had golden generations themselves. If this Netherlands team competed in 2022 world cup they "surely" wouldve won it. Theyre too good on paper compared to the best teams that played that world cup.
Jay Jay Okocha is a wizard in the middle of the pitch. In his prime, he was virtually unmarkable in the middle of that pitch, as the play maker in arguably the best eleven "Super Eagles" ever, the '94 set, Jay Jay's exquisite dribbling techniques, top-notch shot and pass selection are just on a different level.
Seedorf (Sampdoria, Inter, Milan) Davids (Milan, Juve, Inter) Kluivert (Milan) Van der Sar (Juve) Stam (Lazio, Milan) Winter (Lazio, Inter) Bogarde (Milan) Jonk (Inter) Kanu (Inter) Oliseh (Reggiana, Juve) West (Inter, Milan) So many legends on the pitch!
The Nigerian defense was terrible. Okocha owned the midfield and the Dutch had a taste of Brazil flavor in this game that would prepare them face Brazil in the semis at the World Cup.
Okocha was such a talent and once in a generation player. However, I personally think he lacks technical discipline, always trying to do some show off instead of using his incredible abilities to set up passes that can determine a match. No doubt he is one of the most gifted player in history.
The netherlands team was tactically superior else it may have beem a different ourcome. The attack struggled in the firsy half and the selection can be blamed. Such a great collection of talented Nigetian team yet well beaten. The Nigerian team had a weakness playing with such a high line against a quick dutch team. Good game though
Nigeria took it as a friendly but the Netherlands thought otherwise. Nigeria was experimenting, they left most of their big boys on the bench. By the time they came it, the damage was done
Kluivert, davids, bogarde, hasselbaink, seedorf, van hooidonk and so on, all very African names. And btw Africa is a continent, not a country you ignorant bigot
Yes, running full speed and having to measure a whipped cross that is about to bounce! There are very few people who have the instincts to strike that as he did. 99.99% of the world attempting that would be a disaster.
My first ever football match. Seedorf was a class act. Didn't even know he had such pace. But Okocha was something else. What he could do with the ball, his pin-point passes, etc. What a player!
@@Ayoray10 Exactly right. 25 years later, Seedorf showed his quality in the goal he scored last month in the charity game. Crazy touch, turn and shot. Hope u saw it.
Not to discredit the Nigerian goalkeeper but if the super eagles had a better keeper they would of been more successful and score lines like this won't happen.
This was when there was no succession plan due to politics in the team , which is still a problem today!Yekini had no one to replace him, same thing all over the pitch! There were so many talents that just got wasted due to nepotism in that team!James Obiorah, Akpoborie, Ohenhen just a few!
tenho a camisa daqueles jogos olimp até hj. que nostalgia. me fizeram sonhar com uma possível vitória nas copas seguintes. mesmo assim ficaram na história do jogo.
Players of that generation were strong. Zero diving, ref allows enough contact no meaningless yellow cards. At some point Dutch & Nigeria got in a slight physical altercation, but they quickly fixing it by taping each other on the back. And ref understood it. Today ref 9/10 ref will follow them all and distribute yellows. We got today Neymar & Suarez, etc… talented but world class divers.
We had a poor attach despite Kanu Nwankwo and Amokachi .....They created chances and couldn't finish.....Holland had a formidable Team with sharp midfielders and wingers ....Seedorf Never missed one ball on the pitch ...Stamina was Top notch Jesus 😂
Nigeria's RB was quite inexperienced and kept getting cooked with balls over his head for the LW - Overmars or other Dutch player. Also, Kluivert's finishing was magnificent. Seedorf played like an superhero who had football as a hobby when not saving lives.
If you look at the movements and tactical plays of the Dutch players at that time, today's football is at a baby level. The class itself is completely different. Seedorf is like seeing the god of football. Nigeria is also at a different level from today's baby football.
I could at times feel Okochas frustration. Man dribbled past 2-3 NL players like they weren’t there whenever he got the ball. But his colleagues were simply not keeping the ball long enough or making enough passes to play him into position where he can strike or contribute to a goal attempt.

When I tell people that Okocha was more important and better then Kanu playing for Nigeria some mugus would argue using arsenal matches and under 23 matches (ATL 96). There is a reason you hadly see Kanu's super eagles clips, because he was overated for super eagles and had little to no impact for super eagles. 5 ANC, no single goal (for a forward/striker) player. Anyone that think otherwise should tell any Kanu's memorable time in Super Eagles. Pleas do not bring up under 17 and Under 23 (ATL 96).
This was an incredible game, both teams showing an insanely high level of technical skill at warp speed. The scoreline 5-1 to NL sounds like a walkover for NL, it wasn’t, they worked hard for every goal. Nigeria were a lot better than that scoreline. But their defensive tactics were naive and not managed well, and hurt most of their effort and confidence in going forward. Many of those passes by NL that led to most of the goals shows the energy and great vision of the midfield. Seedorf in particular has to be one of the greatest midfielders of all time. I lost count the number of times he dribbled out of double trouble against a tenacious Nigerian defence and drove the ball either at goal or threaded inch perfect passes. This was a better game than even some of the best games in recent international championships.
