Y E S, I'm digging this aesthetic. I've been lucky in the sense that I can fit into a lot of women's clothing, but I'd really like to have more 70s style pieces designed for male figure to be on the market. All that's available now is just reproductions or actual vintage and they have their drawbacks.
The thing is mainstream fashion is all about profits. Through sexism, homophobia and one-sided hypersexualization it is hard to turn things around once again for the better. The only high street online brand that keeps the hope alive is ASOS. It's up to the smaller brands (e.g. nu-in) to highlight that fashion can be genderless, the body is all that counts. I also wish it would be different: Flared pants (60s-70s), tight leather aesthetics (80s), high waisted pants (up until 90s), leggings (80s), etc. It all has been there for everyone already. Now it's pretty much all for one half and other half gets 1000 shades of grey without a lot of variation.
Women have so many options for styles and aesthetics while men are limited to the basics. It makes me sad that clothes, which are a natural and important way we express ourselves, can be restricted
Yeah, and that is really sad, as a man you can't do anything other than get more money or sexual partners or you are considered inferior and less than others. I would love to be able to express myself through my clothes like a lot of women do.
Its still possible, extravagant mens fashion does still exist! (i know because i wear it myself lol) you just face harsh judgement from certain people for embracing it, though these people are mainly homophobes anyway so no love lost
@@Jaded42O is social thing, that everyone get into, everyone need to act and dress in a certain way to fit in, and when someone is not doing that people will tend to push that person away or make then ridicule. So there is a social pressure, not stopping, but pushing people to dress in the ways they see fit. In the end everyone is opressed by society in different ways, but when is a man most people tend to ignore it.
I like to draw, I often look for male clothing and they are so boring. I take most of my inspiration for men clothing from the 60s and 70s I find those decades so colorful. Lately I've been interested in early 2000s fashions and mid to late 90s
I LOVE men's fashion from the 70's and many TV shows from that era. Even conservative "suited up" outfits had a pop of color or an interesting pattern/material/silhouette. Mustard yellow turtlenecks, earthy brown jackets, flared collars, high heeled shoes, etc. It might be out of style in the mainstream, but I follow a few IG accounts of Millennial/GenZ men who embrace this 70's style and it's a huge style inspo for me. Basically any guy who wears 70's inspired fashion gets an instant follow from me ahaha.

My dad, who is ex-military, wore a pink, yellow and other non neutral colours all the time in the 60s & 70s. I’ve even seen him in pictures wearing plaid bell-bottoms and (military appropriate) side burns. Now he’s more into basic reds, blues, blacks, tans and other “regular” colours.

When did I say it bothers me? I was simply saying that my dad used to wear bright colours and patterns, now is more neutral. I didn’t need the quip about fat women, it’s not a trend, its called body positivity and appreciating that beauty isn’t just skinny size 2.

You need very low body fat to be considered attractive, it's objective. Very few fat women have low facial body fat. Maybe you get one or two but it's like unicorns.

I'd like to mention Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, who was pretty much always at the top of the fashion game during the 60s (his Monterey outfit is iconic). I think he was called the 'last dandy' by someone. Search him up-his outfits won't disappoint. And of course his musical influence was huge as well.
i did not know about him, i just knew the rolling stones were a band but after looking up his pictures I have to say thanks because I have so many ideas now.
Not gonna lie, now men, with the existence of tiktok and the internet, are now dressing what the world would consider feminine. Its kinda becoming mainstream slowly, It started with the Maid outfit craze, we got painting nails, eyeliner, corsets, dresses, and everything edgy and emo. Hopefully it becomes mainstream and it in the future it'll be imbeded into menswear a little bit.
It might be happening on the internet, but not so much irl. It'd be so much easier for us guys to wear fabulously flamboyant clothes if it didn't stick out and make people stare.

I love how you gave props to the beatles, considering theyre the most popular band in music history, its kinda crazy how often people overlook their impact on men’s fashion, which as you illustrated here, is the real turning point where mens fashion started to become as interesting as womens fashion The late 60s, from 67 to 69 was the peak of mens fashion in the mainstream in my opinion. Like if u picked any random guy, not even a fashion nerd just any young man, the average style was best at that point in my opinion.
To give a man’s perspective, very few men I know ever really think about fashion. As long as you look sharp, we feel we’re adequately dressed. It’s much less hassle when all you have to do is wear a suit and you’re considered well-dressed

Same. My ideal male partner is someone who does not care about coming off as gay. They unapologetically take car of themselves and dress to the nines. Fashion is sexy and I wish more men cared about it.
@@averyaustin9867 us males are just cowards, sadly. In an ideal world, I'd dress this way all the time, but it's so damn hard to pluck up the courage to stand out in such a dramatic fashion. Even buying it can be awkward and uncomfortable because most of it isn't sold as unisex, its "women's". When it's sitting in the closet its still tough to do. I have fabulous frilly floral shirts and velvet pants and bright coloured bell bottoms that I adore, but too often chicken out and go for slacks and flannels instead.
There's this crazy conception that a straight guy can't be interesting. If there's any kind of personality in how you dress then oh you must be gay. NO. Few things piss me off more than this.
Literally this is my aesthetic!!! I adore the dandy style/peacock revolution of the mid to late 1960s. Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones is my biggest fashion inspiration with the bright colors and bolt patterns, lace and frills, silks and satins, all things flashy and flamboyant but he pulled it off so well. I started growing my hair long and shaggy like his a few months ago and I’ve honestly never felt more confident in myself.
great video! I’m super impressed with how well this was done. The only thing i’d like to ad is that i think the psychedelic/dandy style is actually separate to the hippie style. the psychedelic style had its origins in england and slightly predates the hippies, while the hippies started in america and went into the early 70s.
I’ve been really obsessed with the 70s/late 60s style but man its so difficult to find some decent bell bottoms. The best pair that i managed to find are the wrangler wranchers (size up by 2) but its not as flared as i’d like
I know I decided to alter mine with old skinnies and now I have a pair of wide bell bottoms not a boring bootcut. I also shopped for some wide leg denim that resemble a lot 70s Jean's from the womans section. Ita pretty dark wash not extra details and the stiching is pretty neutral if u ask me, not girly at all. 😎❗
It sucks man but if you can fit into women's clothes, not too hard to find. I also once got a pair from someone who makes handmade ones on etsy, you just give them your measurements- bit more pricy though.
There are a lot of vintage sellers on etsy! You can find decent men's vintage clothing. Some of it is pricey,but trust me it's worth it. Vintage clothing is much more comfortable, durable and timeless.
i got mine at old navy actually! they aren’t super super bell bottomed but they are definitely flared. if you ever go to old navy, they still might have them :)
Recently I’ve become more and more open to dressing how I want, more hippie, rock and roll, think Johnny Depp. And gosh it just feels so natural and fun.
I see a lot of TikTok compilations on RU-vid that just consist of women giving other people fashion hacks and I just thought that it was a shame that hetero men didn't care enough about fashion to the point where a lot of them would want to publicly share styling tips and fashion hacks with each other Clothing is genderless and fashion isn't a sexual orientation.
It isn't. It is not the same sense of fashion As a dude i consider a blue suit with a square patern with lines of white and different tones of dark blues cool as fuck and peek masculine fashion but that is prob not what some other men or women find fashionable
Loved this video! I really wish men and mens fashion embraced more bold styles and colours nowadays. Hopefully with artists like Harry Styles pushing the boundaries we see a 2nd Peacock Revolution. Something I really wish we adopted from that time was a more cropped jacket/sweater look for men which I think gives a much more flattering silhouette that emphasise the longer legs and a less slouchy torso. Keep up the great work!
My dad still wears styles influenced by 1970s so he wears a lot of prints, even experiencing in my mom's saree! So I often found a lot of guys styling really boring, the most colour they would wear was navy blue!
Mens fashion is still exciting and loud just not as prevalent as the 60's/70's and is seen more often in large cities rather than every town like back in the day. Dressing boldly also comes with understanding design and fashion, if your not in the industry or care about fashion it's not important to you. most guys who casually shop only see ads from companies with basics so you can probably guess that most guys will gravitate towards that type of wallflower look. I think the resurgence of Gucci though in 2015 with Allesandro helped men be more adventurous with style.

yes any kind of shorts that are actually *above* the knee. Swim trunks and basketball shorts used to show some thigh, now they are practically capri length even below the knees.
I love to draw musicians from the sixties and seventies and I dress like them sometimes too because menswear from that era just had that colorful edge to it! Great video!
Honestly I’m really glad people in 2020/2021 are very open to normalizing “femininity”, gender fluidity and colorful clothing. I’ve never felt in touch with fashion until this year. Hoping the future fashion will be as amazing as I hope it will be.

Ok now hear me out here is the thing: If I, as a guy, want to find colorful tight fitting clothes in today's fashion landscape, I have to shop the men's and women's section equally. Nowadays, clothing represents much more than just fun, it also reflects your financial status and your gender. So if I walk around in Gucci, I will be percieved as a rich showoff, but if I shop in women's sections I am percieved as trans or nonbinary and/or queer. WHY IS THIS SO COMPLICATED I JUST WANT TO LOOK GOOD I DONT WANT TO BE JUDGED ALL THE TIME. I don't even care if I am percieved as queer, but if you tell people you are in fact interested in the opposite sex only and not trans, you get called an egg or any other slurs for "invading" queer spaces it's frustrating. The gatekeeping is way too much. So back to the hoodies we go. So if you wanted to know why guys are paranoid about this, there you go. I know girls suffer from the same shit btw, just saying.
You know girls sometimes shop in the menswear section or even all the time. If they can do it, you can go in the girls section. Don't let anyone take that joy from you.
There's those shirts with all those patterns and designs on it! Like floral, animals, bright and beautiful colours! With collars and rolled or cuffed sleeves! I love it, I buy it myself!
Holy, thank you for making this video! I’ve been going crazy thinking about how beautiful and immaculate men used to dress specifically any time before the 80’s. Just gorgeous men... looking so empowered and bright, hair full and big, platform boots and pants that, as someone once said, were “tight but never threatening...” Even the chest hair I admire, like they just feel so confident in themselves. I especially love the scarves and more romantic details like frilled and floral shirts. Feminine elements do not equal lack of masculinity AT ALL. And then I look around today and just feel so frustrated! I wish men would dress like they did again, they really did look so handsome and sexy, warm and welcoming, confident and classy. Confidence without seeming like a hot shot or an ass. A big chunk of the men I’m most attracted to are all musicians from that era! 😂😍 Every one looked amazing and happy to be there. I wish that era of style and colour would come back, for both men and women. The world would be better for it! No more Canada Goose vests, True Religion jeans or sweatsuits please! 🤭
So I see you making a lot of points about how men's fashion was greatly influenced by the Beatles and the British Invasion I wonder if we will be saying similar things about kpop groups like BTS in the coming decades I mean people are already recognizing that kpop is challenging aesthetic ideas of masculinity, even over here in the west. And the challenge to conventional masculinity is a big theme in this video, too And I kept thinking of the BTS mv for "Dynamite" while I watched this. It's full of flair! Relatively older groups like SHINee also have really pushed it with their fashion in the past, and multiple male kpop idols are known for fashion beyond black suits. Heels are pretty common too. And when you were talking about black suits at the beginning I kept thinking about the fun red carpet fashion kpop idols, including boybands, often show off Feliz and Chan in Stray Kids have also been noted for reaching into more feminine looks. Felix most notably with makeup and Chan had a photoshoot in a skirt I believe? Many members in Stray Kids have something going for them in this department, actually And a member of Nu'est named Ren I remember saying he loved dressing more femininely. Literally if you google him the first article is about him challenging gender norms lol And TAEMIN wow Taemin from SHINee makes androgyny an art. Like he genuinely has said he's going for androgyny in his music videos and he really does it. Everything from the clothes to the dancing is like the epitome of androgyny. I think his mv for "Move" is the most well-known in this regard bc it's when it started really being apparent in his releases
When men jazz up their outfits, it makes them look so much more attractive. When my SO cuffs his jeans and wears his Chelsea boots - my heart swoons. They can literally work anything but society wants to keep them in basics for stupid reasons 😔

You are so well spoken! :) I've been a huge Beatles fan since I was a kid, and even as a woman, George Harrison is one of my main style inspirations. All of them dressed so well, but his style (and his wives' styles, yay Pattie and Olivia) speaks to me the most (for anyone interested, look up photos of him in Hamburg in '60-'62, what he wore to events like the Apple Boutique opening and Wonderwall movie premiere in '67-'68, the way he painted his home, Kinfauns, and his outfits during his Concert for Bangladesh in '71 and Dark Horse tour in '74). I think men look so fabulous in sharp suits, and in all-over mixed colours and prints, and I would love to see those trends come back! Men - and folks in general - who are fearless with fashion are really so admirable. The 60s and 70s can serve as huge inspiration to dress however you want and have fun with it!
AGREED! George and Pattie definitely are fashion icons! My favorite outfit of theirs are when they went to court for marijuana possession. I believe during 67 they wore alot of Granny Takes A Trip clothes. His orange suit he wears for Blue Jay Way is also a great outfit.

@@pallaciccione7885 bro i've tried to get vintage 70s clothes for men for a long time and i have had no luck whatsoever, doesn't help that i'm in Mexico, most used clothes stores over here never have anything from that era at all
I graduated High School in 1975. I remember the base uniform was faded flared jeans, Dingos(harness biker boots) or sneakers, wide belts w/ big buckles, and T shirts topped off with an open denim western shirt or a patterned shirt. The Ts could be plain white, solid colors, and/or classic graphics like your fav bands, or underground comics like Mr Natural/Keep on Trucking, etc. In the winter I wore a surplus Navy peacoat. Funny now that Im 66 yrs old and retired I dress pretty much the same. Jeans minus the extreme fading and flare, a more mid sized belt, and work boots or white sneakers.

this video was epic and id like guys to feel more comfortable with wearing clothing like this!! also, i would like to say that when u said fashion got boring (around Victorian era i mean) it wasn’t that bad! imo the ruffles and stuff made them look like cute birds lol. im pretty sure they had a variety of colors and mostly patterns. Pinsent Tailoring is a good example of it :)

I've actually recently made the shift from tie-dye and bright colors to more restrained Edwardian-influenced clothing but I'm by no means adverse to adding a bright paisley Ascot cravat or a gaudy tie to me outfit!

you can watch an interview with Malcolm McLaren where he basically says that the boutiques in 60s London were originally located on one street (I forget the name). And catered mainly to gay men. The mod style (collarless) was adopted by the Beatles which suddenly made those stores popular with straight men wanting to be on trend. Unfortunately this resulted in most of the stores being bought out essentially ending what had been a fashion hotspot and place of community for gay men in the 60s
Men will be like “oh god oh fuck i cant look gay, i must wear the same grease stained mass produced gray shirt and sweatpants everyday for a week to counteract this”

Straight guy here, I've dressed 70s and 80s throughout all my teenage years and guess what: PEOPLE LOVE IT. All my dudes out there don't be afraid because there's really nothing to fear. The girls will be all over you, trust me.
The one major downside of most of these clothes (related to the advent of fast fashion) is that they're ALL polyester blends - plastic clothes like that disintegrate and don't breathe at all. If we could keep the exciting forms + color and discard the unsustainable/uncomfortable materials that'd be ideal.

I wish I could find clothes like this for my boyfriend! He's very tall (6'4) and also big and it's hard for me to find him anything 'feminine' or colorful at all. Ironically, I am newly also big, and so have run out of clothes for me and have started wearing his!
I also notice that the more drab, practical colors came into fashion when the black and white camera was invented and was more in style than bright paintings. And it stayed in style until cameras started to have color for the general population. Interesting observation.
