Great review Michael and I need to check out the short story collection. To be honest, I never gave much thought to the "mormon" link to the book, just thought it was haunting and terrifying.

Short Stay: Nice to hear that you enjoyed it. It's a fun read. If you're on a short story kick, The Atlas of Hell (Nathan Ballingrud) is interesting. Window (Bob Leman) is the best SciFi/Horror short story I've ever read. TOR press: The Weird (SS collection) will keep you busy for years. Not sure which book I want to start: Walking Practice (Dolki Min), Headshot (Rita Bullwinkel) or Animal (Lisa Taddeo). Haircut video soon? Love the content.

I need to read Bob Leman. Instructions sounds like smth I would really dig. I hadn't heard of Window, but I'll check it out. Thanks. I hadn't heard of the books you're thinking of starting. Just looked them up. They seem like daring choices. Good luck! Would you believe I got a haircut last week!? The kid cutting my hair was so scared to cut, I had to tell him over and over to cut! Cut! It will grow back! But he just couldn't do it. Not a good experience. And now, a week later and I need another haircut.😪☹

I live in the UK Michael and I encounter Mormon missionaries on a semi-regular basis. Every time I am polite and engage in conversation with them. Every time I come away from those conversations in no doubt that they believe I am going to hell. My pleas that humanity can hold the highest of moral values without their beliefs are met with incredulity. I even tried the extraterrestrial route. Didn't work, if you are an alien and don't look human (man is created in the image of god etc) and don't believe in their god, you're fucked.

I suspect it's very difficult to break away from the religion once you're in it; so much of your identity is tied to it. You are more patient than I am. I see the white shirts and I run.

The Mormon thing must have affected my reading of it on an unconscious level (I have an allergy to all religion), because I was underwhelmed... Will have to re-read it -- or perhaps, I should go straight to the Borges source. I am, however, enjoying the Du Maurier Birds anthology.

I love the Birds anthology! You gave A Short Story in Hell a fair shot. If it didn't work on you, that's perfectly fine and understandable. But yes, I would encourage you to go to the source, Ficciones!

I’m really glad you liked the book! Mormonism is interesting as a very American and very 19th century religion, but doesn’t need your attention in particular. A Short Stay In Hell *isn’t* a Mormon story. It’s a story with a Mormon character. But there’s nothing to suggest his views were ever correct in any way. Nothing would change if he were Jewish or pagan or unaligned/uncommitted. Same deal as with nothing about Sherlock Holmes validating Arthur Conan Doyle’s Spiritualism. Agreed about Ficciones. It’s had a lasting major influence on me.

I wanted to read Short stay in hell but i have heard so much about it that i feel like I've already read it. Wow.i didn't know Mormons don't drink caffeine, i could never be a mormon. How do they exsist without coffee?🤔Anyway, just here for the eye candy today.😍😜

You should read the book. It’s not long, but it’s longer than any review or comment, and the accumulation of details is crucial to the existential impact.
