I make it a rule that as a DM none of the NPC's I control will try to become romantic with any of my players. If a player starts the romance that's fine, but the NPC will not join the party. Visits or communications is fine but I try to never have an NPC in the party full time.

As a player: would love this kind of house rule. I'd prefer that if one of my characters ever marries and has kids, that they meet their partner at some point when the campaign ends. Like, after they retire as an adventurer. I dunno, I think it would be cool to play as the child of one of those characters, but I'm just not into romance roleplay. I'm asexual but not aromantic: just not fond of having to pretend that I would actually be brave enough to talk to someone I have a crush on. Also, I'm autistic and no personal experience to draw on there, so it would probably just be awkward for everyone involved. Like, thanks but no thanks: best I could do is have my character compliment someone's hair or something.

If I ever do become a dm I would apply this rule but also add in a part of the rule being no sexual stuff. I hate that just so much mainly because I'm into mythology and stuff like that. I mean hell I like dark stories but the momment anything sexual happens I tune out immediately because I'm very disgusted by that. I'll still allow romance in a game if I every do become dm but just not the sexual stuff. I don't want that shit near me.

I had a semi-similar story. My first campaign ever had been introduced by a male friend at a local game shop. At the session 0 I had to make a character. As I was a simple 10 year old girl, I made the classic blonde hair, blue eyed sorcerer and my friend made a half-orc barbarian. For some reason the 36 year old store owner who was our DM made a point to tell us both that Orcs and Elves don’t have the best relationships and orcs often ‘misuse’ elves. By his tone I could tell he meant SA. I have no idea if he was genuinely concerned with dnd lore or just being a creep but it still makes me weirded out thinking about it.
@manticorephoenix
@manticorephoenix Год назад
Feel like Orcs would SA other races then and not just elves so his making a point to elves specifically leaves me questioning. Also Homebrew exists and DND Lore is always negotiable as it’s chock full of references to licensed property anyway, and the part of the PHB and the DMG he refused to read says so that you can do and play as how you want, so that tidbit, assuming it’s official lore, didn’t have to be there for a ten year olds ears
@canin1730
@canin1730 Год назад
lore-wise, orcs very specifically would never actually SA an elf orcs despise elves so much that they would never consider anything other than killing an elf, so creepy old DM was just being a creepy old DM people need to remember that you can play your character however you want, lore is for inspiration, and if other players have major issues with how you wanna play it, that group probably isnt for you, and you'd feel better in a different group

Why do these stories always have to turn into dumpster fires whenever there is a minor in the group??? I'm an older woman who has never played in-person D&D, though I have played many of the D&D video games over the years, so I am accustomed to many of the basic mechanics of the game, albeit in editions that are now out of date. I have considered trying to get into the in-person version but haven't found a suitable group in my area yet. Whenever I hear horror stories like this, I have to remind myself that most people in the hobby are not creeps and that my chances of encountering a piece of human garbage like this poor excuse for a DM are probably rather low. It also helps that I'm old, as I have learned over the years not to put up with crap, and well aware of my impending mortality, I'm not willing to waste my remaining time in situations that I find miserable.
@HulkTheSurgeon
@HulkTheSurgeon Год назад
Creeps exist but they are the minority. The biggest issue I've found in in group fighting/personal conflicts, which can lead to group break ups. There are places to apply for games and play them online like Roll20, which is how I've found the group I run for and the pathfinder group I'm in. Though, it's important to note if you try and apply for an online group, it may take a couple tries to find a group you can get along with, due to the zany people you find online. Online applications are kind of a roulette, do you find a cool group you get along with, or one with jerks? Spin the wheel and find out. Hope you get a chance to play with a good group though, it's a fun little hobby once you find one.

I generally find these table top game trainwreck stories amusing, although some of them horrifying- but there are also some good stories out there, some by this guy, some by puffin forest. I want to get more involved in TTRPG soon, not necessarily DnD, but a lot of these stories of complete train wreck games I find amusing as well as cautionary tales, I may eventually have some train wreck stories of my own, but I do recognize that it sometimes goes quite well.

True RPGhorrorstories are rare, and they're even rarer these days. There are way more people playing DnD than there are people posting on RPGhorrorstories, and that's not even considering fake stories. The reason people draw attention to these stories is because they're a spectacle- not because they're common. Don't worry. Besides, many of these stories happen because someone isn't willing to put their foot down. If you can do that, you should be able to avoid experiences like this if they do happen.

stories like these i take with about three fifteenths of a grain of salt, lol. So many stories like these aren't real or are half and half BS and maybe real. Good on you if you take something away from these stories either way. However my DM friend was a victim of one of these 'Fake' DM creepy stories. A girl pinned him with a lot of serious stuff, and on a public forum we all used as well. So we had to clear up the lies she'd told about us. Some select irrational and stupid individuals (we didn't want playing with us anyway) didn't believe us. We actually ended up meeting some great people through the scandal. But that didn't make it okay to basically lobby serious allegations against my DM. We all barred that girl and anyone she associated with from our future campaigns, this worked to great effect. All our games went on with great success and we never faced any real consequence besides more of her shitty friends deciding they didn't like us and lying about us on public forums. But the larger community already knew us, because we had gotten our 15 minutes of fame off the incident. A lot of people actually really liked our DM. And on top of that we had been inadvertently spreading the reputation about this girl and her friends so they were pretty much barred from the whole community by the end of the ordeal. They continued to post to no avail until they got banned off the forums due to how much they were harassing us. Weirder has happened to me but this was up there. I'm unfortunately not comfortable mentioning the name of the forum, due to it being taken off the web in like 2018. The fact that so much ended up going wrong with that community also doesn't help. I wouldn't want anyone finding out I was ever there, much less anyone realizing me and my friends were on there and then deciding I should be lumped in with the individuals that ended up being the reason the place was taken down. Or god forbid I'm recognized by one of the people who frequented that forum. Needless to say it went down hill and we stopped using it before the rest of the shenanigans took place, but I'd still like to prevent any more damage being done to myself and my friends. Lets just say the girl we kicked out was a big part of that forum being permanently retired. To wrap back around to the main point, the subject of the video says shes a "slut for a good dark story" right off the bat. And that her character has feelings for another player character. BIg no no's for me, and major taboo for most campaigns. To top it all off these are warning signs I saw in the person I mentioned in the above tale of caution. So I typically don't take these seriously unless they are told with enough serious evidence or with enough believable points. This one lacks any believable points and has a lot that sounds unbelievable. Its unfortunate but true. Having actually heard this one before, I never believed it. It felt like someone's fantasy of how they view themselves and a life they wished they lived. Lets just say to the rest of us that this has actually happened too its not something that should be fantasized. I'm not saying anything, besides I don't believe this story and don't believe the person ever had anything like this happen to them. But its because I've experienced this before and met people who've experienced the same, in effect, I have evidence and personal reasons to deem this story fake.

To the DM's one credit, the Domains of Dread should never leave the party feeling like Heroes. It should feel like a Shadowrun game. You do everything in your power to have a good and happy ending, only to learn that you did all that work for either nothing, a neutral outcome, or for a trap at the end that screws you over in some way. Because at the end of the day, you are a bunch of mortals trying to bring hope to a dark and dead place, where the powers that be dwell and exist to torment those within their power and punish the dark lords. What Hope you bring nourishes the dark powers, until they ultimately can pull the rug out from under the party, to slurp up all that lost hope from either the party, or the poor NPCs. In the end, the status quo will always return, and the house always wins. Obviously as a DM you can play around it, and maybe even get outside help to shake things up or even yank a domain from the dark powers... but honestly, I never felt that really felt right

I am lucky enough to have had an awesome DM without any ulterior motives although I am a dude so not nearly as a big issue as it is for chicks. I mean even though it is just a game there are still all kind of real world social and power dynamics involved, so having a toxic/creeper DM must be terrible. Thank for the video :)

We have a system where its actually possible to have DMPC's be also player-characters and we can sub-in and out DM's here and there to make sure everyone gets a chance to play and no one is forever-dm'd. one player who was not one of the DM's was god-modding a dmpc whenever the player for it was dm'ing and trying to turn it into a romantic thing, and that blew up in his face eventually. Turns out a people actually have their-own thoughts and ideas about themselves and it doesn't all fall into how you want things to be. Some time later (like, 8 or 9 months?) we've been continuing the story and it has progressed to a very well fleshed out and set-in-stone thing with society, the political atmosphere where we were, the different factions and groups in charge and the roles they play, and the plot as well as the player characters had their roles. The godmodder had been hounding the dm's for a chance to run a session for the better part of the past year (even before the blow-up from the other PC not wanting a romantic relationship with him) and finally it was a 3-1 vote to just let him screw it up and move on afterwards. Surprised to find out he was getting a chance he actually didn't have any plan for running a session and needed a few weeks to prepare - to put that into eprspective, we have a discord group with 4 "dm's" and 12 other players, as long as one DM is available and at least 3 players (which can consist of other dm's on their npc, but not EXCLUSIVELY dm's) are available for a session, any day of the week, they hop into the discord channel, and the dm sets something up (usually takes about 30 minutes) and we save any addressing of major plot points or cinematic events for weekends. Well, we try to, there have been times where the plot got borked during the week. Speaking of, horny-player's session - he sets up and frames the dm that used to run the character he was god-modding's new dmpc, and railroads him into a confrontation with law enforcement. This dmpc was a huge conspiracy theorist and got along great with our party's stategist, who was also a conspiracy theorist. There were a lot of running jokes from that, but they were "getting close" to proving ALL the planets (sci-fi game system) were flat discs with holograms being projected outward to give the appearance of spheres, in order to maintain the lie of gravity, when in actuality the planets were living things that tried to hold you close in order to suck some life essence from each individual - or so the conspiracy theory went. Anyway, what the character was framed for was the cause of the death of 6 law enforcement agents. Law enforcement was being handled by a faction called "Laru" which were all of the same family, blood related, and raised like a pack, where the children were cared for by all adults, and everyone is a brother or sister kind of thing. The law enforcement that was in the area (predetermined before this session started) at the time that the dmpc was railroaded to the patrol route after being framed and word getting out was a young and impulsive one known for losing her temper and had more than a few police-brutality complaints. Needless to say, being convinced that this guy was the one responsible for the deaths of 6 of her siblings, she shot him in the back of the head ready to face the consequences later. W, the party WERE working closely with laru in the plot, but conspiracy theorist strategist is now convinced that they are after him and they got the other dmpc for finding the last link of proof they needed. Strategist acquires footage of cop sneaking up and shooting dmpc, gets all the party together and sets up a sneak attack on the only respected authority figures for the region, horny-player's character metagames to object, ends up being labled a mole, tied up, blindfolded, and left in a hole til they are "done" (conspiracy theorist comes back later alone and kills him) and the attack happens in the dead of night. Lost 2 player characters, one other permanently injured, and laru headquarters was destroyed, most of the pack that was on-planet was killed brutally and unceremoniously. Region is thrown into chaos, and plot take s a huge setback.

I've only been playing D&D for 2 years a grand total of three campaigns two of them active now with two different DMs but all the same players we just rotate week to week. I've got some hilarious stories includes my Goblin Rogue being turned into a sentient walking banana with psychic because I'm a soul knife and recently attracted a form psychic STD in the form of a Madness because I link to someone who was inflicted with Madness so now what my party members it sees all the illusionary rabbit with a top hat trying to convince him to eat me and the other got multiple forms and I caught a form of extreme narcissism. In the other Campaign which is the main one I was a blue Dragonborn Monk who who attuned to a dragon Stone from the dragon Harvest list which is a ancient red dragon heart and became a purple Dragonborn able to breathe fire and immune to fire as well as a few other perks also on the Christmas event where we fought Krampus and defeated him but he escaped we found his chest full of goodies and we all got one roll each in it to see what we would get I nat 20 extremely high and got the soul catching gloves so good day for me on that one. That doesn't even include the craziness of this one player who got two of his characters back to back killed on the same day because one of them half orc Barbarian betrayed us and abandon the party and join the bad guy side it was brought against my character's main enemy in the story a 4 arm Giant Monk with a giant basilisk and we were forced to put him down. Weird to get the guy had to play both characters to fight to the death. The other went full on crazy to try to usurp Loki the god Who was initially working with the Demon King but joined our team because he turned out to be the father of one of our players but one of our other players a gnome artificer who reprogrammed upgrade with nuclear material two Iron Golems somehow using a bone fragment from the goddess of the underworld to jump realms and try to use certain Loki's power Loki of course went there and had an epic battle with him for the rest of us literally a popcorn in real life well our characters did this something similar in game until the very end where it became clear that this battle would never until one of them was dead had to cut down the gnome because of a blood packed that we made the Odin if he misbehaved because of a pass thing he did where he pissed him off. The player now plays a giant Monk who jumps through Shadows because he also multiclassed a little in Rogue he also the DM of the goblin campaign we play. Here's hoping that his giant survives and is not also classed as evil on a sub note for a prank me and another player the son of Loki character had a drinking contest with Thor and the son of Loki character beat us both but before we started are Nerf our immunities to have a fair drinking contest but more importantly we secretly made the bar put everything on the tab of the giant Monk over 2,000 gold keep in mind he does worse to us all the time because we all like to hassle each other with pranks when the story allows but it's all for good fun and I am a learning a lot from the more experienced players of the chaos of D&D can give. My first campaign wasn't as enjoyable as these two but the DM who's currently being to what I'm a Dragonborn in what's a new DM at the time for the first one and a couple of the more veteran players really took advantage of it and pretty much made the game all about them as it became way too overpowered and the story was their way or no way at times which was frustrating because I honestly put a lot of work into my character at the time but I did learn that you really should start off light in the beginning and add story elements throughout also to be more patient with my other players and try to soak up as much knowledge as possible and even if it was not the best experience I still enjoyed the first campaign and I'll still play with the guys from it actually still do from that time as they show up randomly for the other two campaigns but these campaigns are a lot more balance and enjoyable compared to that first one and I feel like the current party I play with taught me a lot more but the first campaign was still over fun again and it was a good learning experience for me as I got to see how to become strong quickly if circumstances allow it and to be a lot more patient with making my character and playing with others probably should know this we all play online as we all live in different areas some different countries. I wish I could give you better descriptions and everything that happened but I'm not the person who takes notes in our party as I am just no good at that because my typing abilities are non-existent even now I'm speaking all this so if there are any autocorrect issues I'm sorry but I'm not going to look through and edit all this one last thing in case you're wondering how I turned into a sentient banana from a goblin the party got into assembly a Time vortex and met the Secretary of time put this parallel moment with a giant psychic squid with a top hat and a monocle basically came off like Doctor Who as he said and did things that our party could not understand but obviously meant something and I got this place in time doing Rogue stuff in this interdimensional pocket and that he's passing Carnation which was a 8-ft tall monkey with eight arms and to get me back to my own time he turned me into a coin sent me through a slot I got back into my own time but as a consequence was turned into a living banana. Funny note I am not a good guy character not explicitly a bad guy either as I play chaotic neutral with this character. and yet the DM's kids saw my character's image and treat my character like a superhero and call him banana man and play him as in recess apparently. Made my whole week and now I lean into the whole banana thing as a constant joke but apparently there have been hints of eventually that will become undone's one day honestly I really just ate the banana now I'm cool with it. Besides I didn't get it as bad as another player who's Hobgoblin cleric did the exact same thing I did we came up with different consequences of the age 30 years old he's up at near his 60s to 80s as I don't know offhand. That doesn't even include what another player did taking a random potion after mixing with some other stuff and being turned into into a random creature which in this case was an 8-ft tall women his clothes ripped off because he was less than a 4 ft tall Hobgoblin but I had a magic sheet that randomly gives a costume for 8 hours and used it on him/her to Temporary give a cat costume till then our next campaign entry to find out what to do about it. If you can't tell our campaigns are insanity and I love every moment of it.

"Trust your gut", I've only heard that from idiots. Maybe you have reasons to doubt someone's behaviour but you can't pinpoint why... that happens. Jumping to conclusions for no reason because you think you possess some kind of sixth or seventh sense, that's pretty stupid.

At least you inadvertently protected a young girl from the creep DM. That I honestly find funnier than anything else.

Being a man, I have seen this behavior, but it is so far outside of my thought process that it would not occur to me to act that way. My pet peeves are creepy guys, cutesy girls, and annoying couples. Creepy guys are boymen who cannot seem to understand that a female player is just their to have fun like the rest of us and don't need or want males fawning over or treating them as a love interested or differently b/c they are women. Then there are the 'cutesy girls' a female, usually with low self-esteem, who acts cutesy, flirty, and girly to encourage male attention and fawning, simultaneously encouraging creepy guys, and undermining other women's efforts to be treated as just another player. Finally there are couples; you know the one's whose significant other does not really care about the game and is just there, or who are always fighting. My last Call of Cthulhu game broke up because one member of a couple cheated on another, there went that game. These an many other factors caused me to leave TTRPG gaming for 20 years.

What is this voice? Is it computer generated? The way a lot of the lines are read is really weird. Like maybe really liking how trailers used to be narrated without understanding why they were actually done that way.

Never play in a campaign with women. It always ends badly.

Definitely, they either are too intimidated in a mostly male group, or take advantage of their gender in some way. It's usually just a bad experience for everybody involved. I have seen one girl in my group do alright though so it's not a universal rule. In this Era it is just an unnecessary risk.
