The fact that Alex was so nervous about meeting Jimmy Page, despite his own immense stature as a guitarist, perfectly epitomises the humility and integrity of this band.
Yet there's down talkers on comment sections about Zep, goes to show a band can be musical geniuses and giants, but there's never a lack of jealous idiots without a clue for talent
I just left a comment on the Vic Firth channel saying that the most epic drum battle (besides Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, the original drum battle) would have been between Peart and Bonham! :) Great minds...
M Mikepa67 Cat ventriloquism will get you nowhere. Omg, do you know Eric Merola? Richard Simmons used to be a House in new Orleans they called 'shot down the rising sun'. @watch?v=-7WGBOx2kv8
+jakbydokumenty Where do you guys come from? Why is it so hard for you to refrain from preaching about God in every thread? If anything, you're pushing people away from God. This was just a post about how it's cool to see famous musicians showing respect for each other, and you see it as an invitation to push your beliefs. Why not just try being a good and helpful friend to the people in your life. That will lead people to inquire about your faith more than your internet trolling.
***** I've watched it. That didn't answer my question. Why do you insist on bringing God into every thread. You make yourself look foolish, and only push people away from God.
+jakbydokumenty Everyone knows a stairway that goes up to heaven, when reversed will be going down to hell. Just don't listen to the song backwards. And if you want spiritual stuff go back to Sabbath man. The original Christian Rock band.
Rock-star stories are so much cooler than the rest of us lowly mortals. "My wife and I were on a bike tour through Morocco and....". Who else but Geddy Lee can begin a story with that intro? My best stories only involve me going to my local Wal-mart or Kroger supermarket.
Something like... Kid Rock stole my ex-girlfriend from me while riding on a golf cart at Mardi Gras simply because they were both Michiganders? I'll tell those carpetbaggers what's good for the goose, baby.
+J High You think Geddy Lee is the only one ho has been on a bike tour through Morocco? I hardly think he's the only one who could begin a story like that. Also, you could easily lie about something like that, so wouldn't even have to go to Morocco, but you could just say that you've been there regardless.
Alex,Neil and Geddy maybe the most talented musicians to all play for the same band. Also they are so humble and down to earth. I don't think there will ever be a rock band like them ever again.
These guys just seem so nice. And humble! The whole bit about 'didn't Zep say that Rush was one of the bands they were excited about' and Lifeson just has his hands folded and brushes it off with 'yeah O think they mentioned that in an interview somewhere'. Just very, very classy and genuine.
About ten years ago, a woman I know - a rather gorgeous Japanese flight attendant - was standing in line in a Vancouver coffee shop. She turned around and stared transfixed at the guy in line behind her. He said, "Hello". She said, "You look just like Robert Plant". He said, "I *am* Robert Plant". And it was.
@@cluggyahoo He showed her his moby dick in the evening then they did the misty mountain hop and she rode his gallows pole but not before squeezing his lemon(or his hot dog). She knew he was going to be a heartbreaker so she said babe I'm gonna leave you. He siad that's ok I need to ramble on anyway even though I would like to give you all my love again but this time without a black dog in the room. She said ok but I'm going to California but next time we can get a hot dog at achhilles last stand. He said ok then we can still be friends. He said well, that's it I have to go over the hills and far away and you have to take a stairway to heaven so let's rock n roll.
VultureClone I thought it was so cool that Alex was on trialer park boys episodes and Ricky kidnapped him..And how he showed bubbles how to play closer to the heart..and to follow up a video with bubbles playing guitar with them..that was great!!! i go to my happy place every once in a while when i watch that one..think I will go there now..😁😅😊😊
@@christhevancura9113 and Bubbles drum kit consisting of 5gallon plastic buckets was awesome and the fake long nose that either Ricky or Julian wore to look like Geddy all Rush fans need to check out those episodes
@@julielaws3727 I believe they are too!!! Watched their documentary & that says it all..Rush is also my favorite band ever,I cried when Neil passed this January.. So glad I was able to see them 4/5 time's in Concert always a Kick-Ass Concert!!! R.I.P. Neil
My friend Bill Hayes had a connection in the music industry who arranged an interview with Alex Lifeson of Rush in September of 1977. Bill was the music director at our College radio station KXLU in Los Angeles. He needed a sound engineer and he took me along and Alex Lifeson gave us a 3-hour interview! During that time I was very impressed with how humble and how genuine Alex was. We saw them in concert that night and I couldn't believe that he would give us that much time on the day he had a show. We played Rush daily on our radio station before anyone else was playing them in Southern California. I'm sure their success had more to do with their talent and the airplay that they were getting in the Toronto area but I will never forget the graciousness and one quote where Alex said he didn't really have his own guitar style! Listening to all their albums up to that point I'm sure he had developed his style by then. Alex also went out of his way to mention what a good bass player Geddy Lee was. Anyone who knows anything about music can easily hear Alex was right and Getty is indeed one of the best bass players to ever play! Congratulations and enjoy your success Alex! It is definitely earned and well-deserved.
Being a guitarist, I truly appreciate, how in awe Alex Lifeson is of Jimmy Page .. That would be for me, like meeting my guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix, if he was alive!!
I love me some Rush, been a fan for decades. They have always been an awesome band, and as far as I'm concerned Led Zeppelin are the greatest rock band that ever stepped on a stage. I happen to love them both.
Can't help but appreciate what Alex has to say about Page-sincerely humble and all, but I honestly think Jimmy could say the same about him-both of them are the most creative guitarists of all time
i love the respect they all show for musicians they love. it makes me happy today to see robert plant play with josh homme and dave grohl. i couldn't ask for much more besides BRING BACK THE BLUES!
I just went threw and read 'all' comments. To all the posters that commented on this post. Amazing apparently no one realizes that these comments are just so overwhelming that it blows my mind. So much negativity just on someone's opinion WOW! These people are just'artists' expressing there emotions and emulating their hero's . The greatest compliment anyone can get is plagiarism. Especially from a worldly renowned artist. Bless all u people that have such strong feelings on your opinions. If all that energy could be used for good. Stay above the dirt everyone and "PEACE"
I love hearing stories like that, everyone has people they just can't get over meeting even when they are famous world class musicians themselves. Just the best.
alex was a huge influence in my own playing way back in the day...still play some his stuff every now and then just to keep up some rush chops.....But I think if you realize his fascination with page its right up there with say - if hendrix was still alive and you gotta chance to say 'sup jimi.......Isnt Led Zeppelin the ALL TIME BEST ROCK N ROLL BAND EVER? MOST KICKASS ROCK AND ROLL BAND IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND? Jimmy Page will always have his title..People will ALWAYS request his guitar playing more on the radios than anyone elses.... Hes got his title whether or not you think he does....Jimmy F'in Page !!
amen to that brotha.... I love jeff becks playing probably more than anyone elses for the long run but even beck couldn't write a song that tops jimmy page....beck hardly writes anything anyway - hes usually just raping someone elses song into a wicked frenzy unlike nobody else can do with an electric guitar.....& yet its not about technique or fancy theory in his playing - its just him knowing the instrument better than anyone else Ive saw...Jimmy beats Beck though in the 1 category that is probably more self gratifying than any other....Writing great music....
What I think is Rush's most distinctive aspect among the other bands who gravitate in the higher spheres of rockdom, apart from unusual talent and longevity, is the respect they have for their fans and for the media, even to those (very few) media people who do not respect them. Reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd in this regard. It's obvious it's not just an act, there is this unique interaction.
We will be listening to them and they will still be played 50 years from now.....how many of today's bands can we really say that about ? Not too many snapper-head....not 2 many
Jimmy Page was a well known session player (1963-66) and guitarist in the Yardbirds (1966-68). Zep called themselves the New Yardbirds until 1969. RUSH formed in 1968 but remained unknown outside of Toronto until 1974, I saw RUSH shortly after their first album was released and was amazed at the musicianship.
I've met Jimmy Page. Shook his hand and chatted with him for a few minutes. He even introduced me to Jason Bonham whom was playing drums for him at the particular tour. Outrider tour. A pefect gentleman... I think I would be more blown away by meeting a member of Rush though.
Nah, he doesn't inhale helium before he sings. He is the master of trying to sound like he's on helium and that's why his voice sounds like a rat getting raped.
thats so true about jimmy page.... who else in their career wrote more songs - riff by riff / lick by lick... album to album that were just so brilliant through experimental avenues as a guitarist than jimmy page? for real.... I mean everyone wants to play like jeff beck..I love jeffs playing as much as anyone else...wish I had his mojo in my own playing... but jimmy wrote more songs than anyone on guitar that made the milestones in rock guitar playing... beck plays stuff a lot of other ppl write...his way....& page even said when becks in his moment hes untouchable.... but nobody beats jimmy at songwriting and producing his own thing...
I have seen Page live and I've seen a million other good guitarists also but nobody made the hair stand on your neck like Page . The tones he gets are just so heavy it is impossible to describe to someone who hasnt heard him . He and John Paul Jones both understand how to fill a room with with a fat sound . Page and Jones understand drama , atmosphere and dynamics like classical musicians .
After Led Zeppelin broke up was it Jimmy Page with a solo career or was it the guy that is represented by the writing quill that went on to write and sing his own material , people tend to forget that Plant has more credits writing music as a solo artist and that Page and Plant often collaborated on Zeppelin songs , Yes Jimmy was a producer but that does not necessarily mean he wrote all of the music . there are a few similarities between rush and zep , they both had outstanding musicianship and composed a ton of great songs . Jimmy stole a lot of music and Peart borrowed a few ideas from Shakespeare.Plant is still writing and doing the odd concert and it looks like Jimmy is resting on his laurels. Even JPJ was doing sound tracks for movies just like Stewart Copeland of " the police " fame. Last thing I remember Page doing was that little hbo thing with edge and jack black.
too bad we didn't have the internet tech back in the days when these guys were young and making waves in their careers documenting their experiences.... I never quite got the idea of having the edge as part of the trio.... I mean he definitely made his own sound in guitar playing......He just never really had the avenues in his playing that I found to be real influential.... I don't really wanna go play with a delay after I hear his stuff....But when I hear George Lynch play with a delay - I do...... Know what I mean? I never bought any U2 stuff either...Usually turned it off on the radio when it came on...Not that it was bad - just didn't have the vibe I really enjoy which is all blues based really.... Edge doesn't really have that going on... Page and White both do.....
Well,Robert Plant is known for travelling a lot in the middle east, noth africa, india and the far east.Kashmir and Achilles last stand are both about Plant's trips to Marocco
Rush is global treasure; we will never see their like gain. And while I am still very pissed that Neil is gone, it is great that Alex and Geddy are still their humble down to earth selves.
Once a guitarist(or any musician for the matter) reaches a certain level it's ridiculous to speculate or claim that one is "better" than another...Example; Who's better? David Gilmour, or Jimi Hendrix? A stupid irrelevant question, and the person that ask it, or claims to have an answer, just shows their own lack of understanding about music as art and expression.
Surprisingly (at least by your standards) The genre and sub-genres of rock have been around for years. It is overshadowed by the waves of soulless junk that simply is up to fill radio time.
Besides Page and Plant and Geddy and Alex (and Neil and Bonzo and JPJ), the one other person that truly needs mentioning is having a huge birthday today. On this date in 1999, I had the pleasure of singing Happy Birthday to Jon Anderson in person at the House of Blues in New Orleans. I shall sing it again today in 2014! Happy 70th, Jon! Best Three Bands Evah!
@kissfan004 Well I beg to differ....they're both excellent players and they both made significant contributions to the rock genre, but Jimmy Page laid the the foundation for all hard rock guitarists and Alex Lifeson took what Page laid down and created a new guitar language. They're both great players.
What an incredible moment. The minds of different style outstanding rock music, all meeting at the same time. What could be shared and learned from both sides o the track. 🤘🏼❤🎵🎶🎤🎸🥁🎶🎵❤🤘🏼
rush amazing as a 3 man band and i put them in the top 5 off all time but to ever put them above Zeppelin is complete idiocy. One influenced the other and you can tell who did. I love Zeppelin , they always will be my number 1 but Rush is probably 2nd. Sometimes i just need my Rush fix. Matter of fact Rush is the only concert ive ever been to. Zep was before my time. lol born in 76'
+Im Devy im not even a Rush fan, and they are 1000x better. Zepplin are thieves of music, stole 30 songs and tried to claim them as their own. To hear page talk about how he wrote stairway makes me wanna reach the tv and smack him, you stole the riff you lying sack of dog shit! Zepp most overrated band that ever lived. Once you take away the 30 songs they stole, they are not very impressive.
+thorn35 You obviously don't play guitar or you would know Stairway and Taurus Spirit are not very similar at all once you flesh the entire songs out, Stairway is a completely different and much grander and more effective composition. They have a vaguely similar descending chord pattern in the first few seconds but that's about it.
I first met Jimmy Page in person when my friend stood on his girlfriend's long cloak at a Stanley Clark concert in New Orleans, afterwards going to the Royal Orleans hotel. Years later post the R&R HOF 2013 "Indictments", I met Robert Plant on a plane after Rush's show in Austin while headed to Rush's next show in Ft. Lauderdale. Meeting Zeppelin is always a freaky trip, mon. I be slappin' myself! I've never actually "met" Rush but I've seen them 30 times now since 4/19/81 in Armstrong Park rollerskating near Mahalia Jackson. It's so weird that Neil was 'shunpiking' on Bourbon St. at the same time I was in the air with Robert Plant. I'm still blown away by the whole thing, as you can tell. I wish that I could live it all again! Oh yeah, that was me with the Red Watchmaker's Bee Shirt holding the BLAH sign in Austin, btw. Reading the Cee Lo Green article in the back of the flight magazine wearing the Time Machine Moving Pictures Tour shirt in which he was speaking of, with the feather in the wind sitting right there! omg talk about weird.
I just finished listening to Led Zep 4 ! I would take Rush debut album over this ANY DAY with John Rutsey, who was just as good as Bohnam. Rush was and always will be BETTER MUSICIANS than Led Zep. Even though humble and influenced by Led Zep. Rush knows deep inside that they blow these song stealing basic blues Rockers away on a GRAND SCALE !!! Led Zep Is GREAT but RUSH is LEGENDARY !!! No comparison between the two !!! RUSH RULES !!!
Bullshit. LZ were every bit as creative as Rush. They never stole anything anyway - blues tradition was built on reimagining old songs, coming up with new arrangements and new takes on the old standards. LZ were masters at doing so. BTW, John Rutsey really wasn't great - unlike Bonham and Peart.
Watch Zeppelin at Knebworth in 79. please....and get back to us brother. Zeppelin 4? Four Sticks? When the levee breaks? I'm I diehard of both bands....but Zep 4 compares to Abbey Road and the like....oh...listen to that too. Enjoy
"I wanted to play like him and think like he thought when he played.....and then I became 100 times better than he ever was but still got less recognition because it isn't cool to like Rush but it's cool to like a junkie who made a career of playing sloppy and ripping people off."
Blind Terry Tucci You're not supposed to overthink music. Rush is a bad ass force musically, but lyrically they are an intelband and in my humble opinion that's what destroyed rock n roll. Overthinking the lyrics.
I was fortunate enough to meet Alex Lifeson about 5 or 6 years ago, at a Gibson guitar event. I was likely just as excited meeting him, as he was meeting Jimmy Page!
Unlike other interviewers, this guy asks the brief question, then shuts up & lets the guys talk. He understands *they* are the stars of the show and the audience came to hear them. I appreciate that, and wish other interviews did the same.
Rush - one of the best concerts you will ever see. I saw the Page, Plant tour they are talking about. It was a great concert. Top 5 along with Rush and Pink Floyd
I just love these guys. They're so down-to-earth. I wish Peart would join them, eh? I so admire Peart's intelligent lyrics. One of rock's all-time legendary bands.
Try Achilles Last Stand, Stairway to Heaven, Since I've Been Loving You, Dazed and Confused (Live), No Quarter (Live, especially from "Haven't we met Somewhere Before?"). Led Zeppelin was much more than a blues band, ESPECIALLY when they improvised.
Two of the best bands of the last 40 years. There were other bands around at the same time, but they don't compare to those two.Just my opinion, but it's the only one that matters.Period.
Yeah Alex did in his younger days play like Jimmy Page. There is a video circulating on RU-vid of him doing a guitar solo using a violin bow just like Jimmy Page did
