When Schumann Gets Intimate

Robert Schumann composed Von Fremdmen Ländern und Menschen (‘From Unknown Lands and People’) in 1838 while he was separated from his future wife, Clara, whose father refused permission for the couple to be together. It is a wonderfully poetic opening to a sequence of 13 miniatures called Kinderszenen (‘Scenes from Childhood’), a song-cycle without words.
In its tiny frame, the piece explores fascinating changes of mood and a unique approach to transition. Schumann floats a soaring phrase several times over a gentle triplet accompaniment, like a barcarolle, with the notes divided between the hands. Inside the texture, the musical notes BACH revolve mysteriously. Schumann loved ciphers - the musical letters in Clara’s name (CAA) also appear in the piece, to magical effect.
In a future video, Matthew King will discuss some of these things in more detail

Schubert is my favorite composer but it's impossible for me to hear Schumann's music or read his letters and not fall in love with him.

What is the best biography of Schumann? I'm fascinated by him. Thank you!

Peter Otswald's 1985 biography is probably the most comprehensive. Judith Chernaik's 2918 biography has good reviews (I haven't read it yet).Nancy Reich's biography of Clara Schumann is also good. Janice Galloway's Clara is an interesting novel (not necessarily very accurate).

Matt, what's your view on the MM crochet=108 for this movement?
@themusicprofessor
@themusicprofessor 3 месяца назад
It seems fast but actually makes sense. Many of our ideas about tempo are affected by the subsequent romanticised performance tradition.

Wonderful explanation! Perhaps it's stupid but I never understood the title of this piece...

The calm, playful, and whimsicalness of this piece makes me imagine a child lazily daydreaming about travelling to foreign unknown lands and meeting new people and cultures.

I'm going to do a little talk about it soon. I believe that the words of the title appear in a story by ETA Hoffmann which also refers to JS Bach, so it's a very intriguing mix. The interpretation by @sirpixel7945 is still perfectly valid however.
@Jajadore

@@sirpixel7945 I like your interpretation of the title! Perhaps I'm expecting a more exciting, more lively and a more colorfull piece with such a title. When I play or hear this peace, I see a person who is melancholic but peacefully dreaming about the past.

Beautiful playing and great presentation of this piece. Correct tempo imho. Was a bit troubled with bars 5 & 6 left hand. Your manuscript marries with mine but I hear left hand Bb C#, E,etc (reproducing bars 1 and 3) rather than the G B, D etc from the second half of bar 5. I’m no expert here so could be totally mistaken. Sorry to be critical. Thought I had been playing it incorrectly so had to deep dive into my manuscript.
@themusicprofessor
@themusicprofessor 3 месяца назад
Thank you. Actually the pitches in 5 & 6 are the same as in the notated music.

In the repeat they are as written, first time I’m not convinced.
@andrewnix6480

@@DougGray-xf3hz you can’t get much farther apart than a Bb/C# and a B natural/D natural. Measure 5 does sound as written - try playing it simultaneously with the chord in measure 1 and the resulting dissonance may convince your ear

How does the letter H correspond to a note? Is it German?
@themusicprofessor
@themusicprofessor 3 месяца назад
It is what Germans call the note 'B'
@claudefazio
@claudefazio 3 месяца назад
Yes, in German the note H means B while the note B neans B-flat.

I think the reality was more complicated (and more 19th century) than that. They clearly had strong feelings for each other all their lives, but platonic passion was probably as far as it went.
