The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

@markbeebe125
@markbeebe125 10 месяцев назад
Wildly overrated most of the time. Yes he was damn good but there's no question that it was Jordan's not just his immense talent and skill and drive but the reason that team was so successful Beyond of course great coaching was the fact that Jordan had unlike any other star in the history of the league, a will to win that he could impose on not only the game but on his own teammates. We've never seen anything like it in the history of the nba. It made me less of a fan throughout the 90s because it was basically a foregone conclusion that the Bulls were going to win whatever they wanted to win except in that come back year of his butt in the sixth championship years every single year you knew the bulls were going to win the championship every single year you could just tell that there was this thing happening where Jordan was imposing his will on each game which meant he could thus control each series. If the guy could control an individual game then of course he knew what he needed to do was to control four individual games within any given series and he did. And he did it by not only imposing his own will on what was happening on the floor but he imposed his own will through relationships and through practice and through pregame and through whatever happened on the court, on his teammates. It's not as if you didn't see it, guys like John Paxton and Steve Kerr would step up and come through in the clutch when they needed to constantly. Once he learned how to control this aspect of himself once he discovered that he had that ability to literally not only will himself to victory but to will his team to victory, he learned how to get over the hump of the Pistons and the Celtics. Pippen was certainly great but I'm offended that he's considered greater than Dominique Wilkins, Bob McAdoo etcetera. My interpretation is that it was supposed to be the 50 greatest players of all time, not the 50 greatest teammates. He had really good individual skills but his skills and talent were nowhere near that of certain other people that never made that 50 or 75 And Johnny asking the question what is Michael without Scotty and what is Scotty without Michael.... I think we saw enough of that to know the answer. Michael was hitting clutch shots winning the NCAA championship as a freshman.... He was wildly dominant in the NBA even before Scotty made his rise cuz it took him a couple years to really get his footing and during that period the Bulls were improving every year and Jordan was getting better and better and was dominating the league with scoring titles, MVPs, and DPOY awards. Not to mention that even in his old age when he came back to play Washington for those couple seasons he was still unbelievable I remember begrudgingly picking him on my fantasy squad as much as I dislike him because I just knew that even at almost 40 he was going to stull be really productive. No certainly he didn't win his titles until Scotty became scotty, but at the same time it is kind of rare for individuals to lead teams to an NBA title it very very very very very very rarely happens. I've gone back through every team dating back to the year I was born in 1970. And if I'm correct the Pistons in 04 were the only team to ever win without a superstar and a second "somewhat star" to compliment him. Arguments can be made about how big of a star people like ginobili and Tony Parker were, an argument can be made about how big a star the players on the Seattle team that won the title in the late 70s. But the backcourt alone on that team were both considered stars back then then

They complimented each other so well. Watching those games was a treat. Pippen true value was in the little things he done extremely well night in and night out that won’t show up on a stat sheet. Kobe pointed that out in a video. I was like YES, finally someone gives a glimpse of what Pip was doing and appreciated it. He really shined that season MJ was gone because he had the spotlight. Basketball is a team sport and every player have a role in other to win. The Bulls needed MJ to win as much as they needed Pippen, because they played their role perfectly. Kobe needed Pau and Shaq in certain occasion, in order to win. LeBron needed Kyrie, Wade and Streetclothes to win. wasn't for Kukoc's game winner, a new addition to the 1994 Bulls team that hadn't played with Jordan in the first 3peat, the Bulls would have been down 0-3 against the Knicks while Pippen sat on the bench from the sidelines. Pippen did not push the Knicks to 7 Games by himself. He needed extra pieces that Jordan did not have pre-1996 such as Kerr and Kukoc.

My take is that PIppen was certainly a key piece of Bulls' success but Jordan could still win a lot if we replace Pippen w/ Reggie Miller or Shawn Kemp caliber players. Kemp would be in HOF and top 50 / 75 had that happened. Pippen OTOH mighta very well be just another good player like Kevin Johnson that never made it to HOF.

@@TellenJonesyou're part of the problem, the way you just dismissed pips elite defense (which defense was the biggest part of the bulls success) and the fact he ran the triangle...and suggesting Reggie etc could replace that is laughable
@TellenJones
@TellenJones 10 месяцев назад
@@twizzy585ots Who's to say defense is the only way to win championships? Bulls might be a bit off defensively if Reggie came in for Pippen but they'd gain more offensively to compensate that. The way Reggie kept moving around off the ball to loosen defense up, he's like the prototype of Curry and would definitely create more open looks for Jordan. During Jordan's first retirement, Reggie Miller took his lone-man Pacers to back 2 back ECF while Pippen only went for ECSF in 94 and then was in danger of missing playoff in 95. When asking both Pippen and Reggie to be that franchise guy, Reggie put out BETTER PERFORMANCE. It's not even close. Reggie had bigger heart and clutchier than Pippen. Triangle offense is not so difficult that only Pippen could do. Hell, a bunch of scrubs like Mills and Diaw in that 2014 Spurs team already moved the ball around so clinically they made Lebron chasing AF. You think Pippen was the only one capable of moving the ball? Think again.

@@camaradiop3731 KJ's primary problem was he lacked of nuf stellar performance to boost his case. He had a good stretch in early 90's and then got injured a lot to miss many games so he could not build his resume up. KJ and Shawn Kemp both had HOF capabilities but didn't make it. I'll say this: If Suns had won in 93 and Sonics in 96 over Bulls, both KJ and Kemp would be in HOF right now. The same could be said of Jeff Hornacek. Jordan's overwhelming dominance ruined a lot ppl's career. Lebron OTOH in comparison was embarrassingly an enabler. He enabled Norwitzki's legacy who at the time was deemed a has-been. He enabled Duncan to be the only one to win championships in 3 decades. He enabled GSW to be a dynasty.

As a lifelong Bulls fan, Scottie could on any given night have a big offensive game, but he always gave a strong defensive effort. The problem was that Scottie never realized that his game was not always at that level… there is a reason his career average is around 18 PPG, and it isn’t just his post prime years. He could generally be counted on for about 18 PPG and when you got 30 it was just gravy. Honestly, when he played I thought he was gracious and understood that his role was important if not glamorous. Watching him now, he sounds like a delusional entitled jerk. Scottie’s biggest issue on the court was coming up small in the biggest moments, the 1.7 seconds in New York, game 7 in Detroit, the way he handled the 97-98 season, and his time with Blazers/Rockets. He was great in moments, but small in too many big moments. Just my take.

Jordan needed Pippen because it is a team sport and you need a good team. This apply to every player but Jordan was far more valuable to Bulls than Pippen. People tend to think of NBA as a one man sport, it is not. It's a team sport and one player cannot win the championship by themselves. Everyone needs great teammates to win. The question becomes how valuable you are to your team and whether you can help the team win the championship. To me Jordan was way more valuable to the Bulls than Pippen was. It was not even a debate. However they needed each other to win championship, just like Shaq needed Kobe and Wade and Kobe needed Shaq and Pau Gasol, or Lebron needed Wade and Bosh and Kyrie and Anthony Davis. You need other players to help you win. It depends on how much value you add to the team.@@KlikQuot

Back and foot injuries messed Pippen up that year (1997) in the playoffs. And that was kind of the beginning of the end for his prime athleticism, too. He injured his back at the end of game 3 in the first round against the Bullets and then he messed up his foot against the Heat in the ECF that same year. That foot injury is also the injury that caused him to need surgery and ultimately miss a bunch of the 97-98 season (although it was also because Pippen didn't get surgery in the off-season). And that back injury from the Bullets would pop up every now and again, too (Game 6 in the 1998 finals is probably the most well-known example of this).

Jordan fans never want to hear about Jordan being outshined or outplayed. And the hate is more extreme now because Pippen has a problem with Jordan. He wasn't the best or the go to player, be he was their most important player. He covered up Jordan's short comings, especially in being a team leader. No Bulls player has anything negative about Pippen, can't say the same about hindering Jordan.

You're beyond delusional if you thinking Pippen was the team leader anywhere close to Jordan. Magic and Bird were never forced to carry the type of load that Jordan had to with Pippen's inconsistency during the Bulls' second 3peat. Could Magic or Bird have ever won NBA championships with their best teammate playing as horribly as Pippen? I doubt it. Sure, Magic had a great performance in Game 6 of the 1980 Finals with Kareem sitting out, but he was helped a lot by Jamaal Wilkes 37 point effort. Jordan won regardless, even if his best teammate played horrible in 1997 and 1998. Thats something Magic, Bird, Kareem, Lebron, Kobe, etc can't say. They never singlehandedly carried their team and consistently took over big games to decide the NBA Finals while their second/third options of Magic/Kareem/Worthy, McHale/Maxwell/Johnson, Wade/Bosh, or Gasol played as horribly as Pippen did in several series of the Bulls' last 3peat.

Pippen's under-performance was just sometimes too glaring to overlook tho. He choked in G7 of 90 ECF. He refused to set Kukoc up with 1.8 sec left in G3 of 94 ECSF. He was about to miss 95 playoff until his "horrible teammate" Jordan returned to right the ship (so much for being MVP candidate just a season ago). He went 5-17 in Jordan's flu game when Jordan desperately needed help. He choked 13-pt lead away yet again in G7 of 00 WCF. I think the biggest impact Pippen had on Jordan (and vice versa) came from the two of them guarding each other in practice for over a decade. Both had great defense, and a lot of that developed over countless reps going up against each other every day. Jordan was already scary, but going up against one of the best defenders in the league every day is going to pay off huge in games. And Pippen became the player he was because of it as well. If you are guarding the best player in the league in practice, stopping the other teams stud is going to look easy. I'm not saying Pippen made Jordan, but Jordan might not have been as good without 33 on his side. I think the biggest thing holding Pippen back in a lot of conversations is that he just wasn't as competitive as a Jordan. If he had more of that drive, he might have been an even better player, and the Bulls might have been more dominant, which is really scary.

From 1986-1990 in the playoffs, Michael Jordan averaged 40/7/7 on 53-36-85, 61% TS against everyone other than the Pistons (and their "Jordan Rules" defense)... and he still averaged 30/7/6 on 47-27-81, 56% TS against them. included the Bulls' team TS% in all series so you can see how little teammate support he had. And remember, team TS% includes his own scoring, so really his supporting cast's TS% was even lower. the Bulls shot 51% TS against the Cavs in '88, but Jordan shot 63% TS (on 45 ppg), his teammates shot 44% TS (on 57 ppg combined). So he scored 44% of his team's points, on +19% above their efficiency. Fun fact: he did not have an 11 ppg scoring teammate in that series. His two double digit scoring teammates averaged 10.8 and 10.6, on 51% and 49% TS respectively. That series is probably the greatest one man carry ever.

If Kobe and Shaq could have spent more effort trying to be good teammates, instead of feuding in the media over whose team it was, they could have easily won six championships. The fact is Scottie was not the player he became when he first entered the league his first 3yrs where abysmal I clearly remembered interviews by teammates and coaches talking about how MJ would go after Pippen in practice and how management repeatedly asked MJ to slow it down. Have Pippen just showed up in 89 and 90 against the pistons we might be looking at 7 or maybe even 8 championships instead of 6 Pippen in 2 elimination games he gave a whooping 10 pt combined Pippen had his moments of course just how this video has shown but their was a clear reason why in the 90's the chicago bulls where actually being called Jordan and the jordanears Pippen to me in some ways today is overrated while back then I would say he got his just due.

In fact there are many occasions where Jordan explicitly says I couldn't win without Scottie or there's no one I'd rather have by my side than Scottie. At times he was hyper critical but that's the point, it shows how much Mike needed scottie so when he was out for whatever reason it was inevitably gonna make Mike's job harder. I guarantee that nothing MJ had to say and or did say in that Last Dance Documentary was shocking or new information that MJ previously hadn’t or wouldn’t have said directly to Scottie’s face. Every 'Bronny talked up Pippen's 94 season to bash Jordan while ignoring how poorly Pippen performed in 95 season. First of all, Pippen's 94 season was not as great as they claimed. Prior to 94, Bulls won 12 playoff series in a row on their way to a 3-peat. In 94 under Pippen's leadership, they won 1 and then got eliminated by Knicks. From 12 in a row to 1 and done. I say the differences are NOTICEABLE. Then in 95 Pippen was in all sorts of troubles. The team was on the verge of missing playoffs. Pippen wanted to be traded away for better contracts so he caused chemistry problems in locker room. He had off-court legal problems with his fiancée... you name it. During the same period there's this guy Reggie Miller from the same division who's also a lone star on his Pacers. Reggie took his Pacers to ECF in back to back seasons, clearly better performance than Pippen, and yet no one talked about it. Reggie proved he's a better leader than Pippen. Pippen ain't even as good as Reggie when he's given the #1 option. It's playing alongside Jordan that elevated his historical place.

Pippen did not outshine Jordan in game 5 of the 1991 finals. Sure, his 32/13/7/5/1 is slightly better than Jordan's 30/4/10/5/2, but Jordan is the one who led the team down the stretch, either scoring or playmaking. Not to mention that Jordan was the one who guarded Magic the entire game(did a good job with Magic shooting 33.3%, but Magic still ended up with 20 assists), while Pippen's assigment(Worthy) was hurt and he had to guard the likes of Perkins,Green and Terry Teagle. Jonny was also disingenuous about about game 6 of the ECF in 1992. Pippen was the best player in the first 3 quarters, but Jordan went crazy in the 4th and led them to victory with a bunch of clutch baskets in a very close game. In game 2 of the ECSF against the Cavs in 1993, Pippen was the best player. However, that's the game Jordan injured his wrist so badly he started shooting with his left hand, until he had to leave the game still in the 3rd quarter. He was probably on his way to another 30pt+ game.

People really underplay those Bulls, saying MJ 'only' had one other all-star player. But Pippen wasn't just an all-star. He was also a 1st team all-NBA player, AND regularly 1st team all-defense, as many times as Jordan. Phil Jackson and other Bulls coaches talked about how Pippen covered up any defensive lapses, including when Jordan gambled for a steal and didn't get it. Pippen usually led the team in assists, as a point forward type, while typically taking on the hardest defensive assignment. Then you had Rodman as a constant all-defense team pick (2x DPOY, earlier), and leading the league in rebounds and offensive rebounds for many consecutive years. Steve Kerr, the all-time 3pt career percentage leader. The best Euro player in Toni. The best Australian player. It was basically an unrecognized super team. Taking only Pippen alone, what other great player besides Jordan had the luxury of having a consistent all-NBA player and all-defense team player for so many years? So when Jordan said he would not keep playing unless Pippen played with him, you understand what he meant.

During Pippens prime he was first team all NBA and first team all defense in the same season three times. Doesn't sound like a lot but when you consider only eleven players in NBA history have actually done this more than three times and that list is a who's who of all time great players. Kobe, Jordan, Duncan, Lebron, Giannis, Dwight, KG, Hakeem, David Robinson, Walt Frazier and Jerry West are the only people to do that more times than Pippen. So he was a superstar player 100%. You could argue that with his own team he'd have made more first team all NBA selections as he'd have stood out more as the main guy. Two of his selections came the two years MJ left to play baseball. 94-96 Scottie was a top 5 player in the league for sure.

He has outshined jordan a bunch of times which is really a great thing for your teammate to do. I’m always happy when Scottie Pippen outshines Michael Jordan. That shows you that Michael Jordan has some great help. There are 3 games that they both score 37 points apiece against Boston, Atlanta and Phoenix. What about the game when they both scored over 40 together? What about the game when Pippin had 47 and Jordan had 24? What about the game when Pippin had 41 and Michael Jordan had 24? What about the game when Pippin had 43 and Michael Jordan had 29? Yeah many other games similar to that with Pippin bailed out jordan in clutch moments. Joel never complained. He just wanted to win and know that he had somebody that complemented him and helping him get to that stage of winning.

Pippen only guarded Magic in game two because Jordan got into foul trouble in the 1st quarter. Other than that Jordan guarded Magic majority of the Finals Series. Pippen had his hands full guarding James Worthy who had a bum ankle lol.

I have a lot of respect for Pippen. He wasn't as good as Jordan, but he could have been the first option on an extremely good team. He chose instead to backup Jordan, and won the bulls 6 rings. I don't think Jordan could have done that. If there was a hypothetical better player than MJ active in the 90's, I don't think MJ would have been able to back that guy.

MJ without Scottie Pippen would still be the greatest individual Player since Wilt,Kareem. MJ came to the league fully formed as he led league in scoring in rookie year and was great defensively too. And it only got crazier from there beforvSvotyie got to the Bulls and continued all the way to 98. Not so with Scottie. Scottie would not be the Scottie we know without MJ. Let’s be serious Arnett🙂

We never said Scottie wasn't a major reason the Bulls won and yes he had major games but Michael never lowballed Scottie. Most Chicago fans appreciate all Scottie has done. Most negativity came from Scottie lately against Mike. Mike always said there's no titles without Scottie. Big ups to Mike, Scottie the entire Bulls team and organization for the Glory years and 6 rings

Thats why the Bulls where so good in the 90's, they had two players that for the most part, could not be stopped, and when one didn't play well, the other picked up the slack. The Bulls are lucky they had Pip and Mike and they stayed with the Bulls so long because the Bulls organization was shit and didn't pay Mike and Pip what they deserved.

That's what these people who weren't even born yet don't get about Pip being upset with how Jordan chose to make him look bad because he didn't want to run a play. Pippen did just as much as Jordan, but it's always about Jordan, and is the reason I don't see Jordan as the goat. Pippen carried the Bulls to playoffs in Mike's absent, granted they didn't make the finals but he did carry them. I can't blame Pippen for being mad at Jordan, because if I help you become what some consider the goat, you should've never spoke against me, just make yourself seem great. 🖕Jordan.

I feel sorry for Pippen. Regardless of his character post the Bulls era, Jordan is not MJ that we know without Pippen. Pippen has been one of the greatest 2nd option in a team regardless of era. Very dependable, very consistent, and did his job well. His individual stats and accomplishments should earn the respect of fans. Take a Pippen as a player and give him to LeBron as a teammate, I’m sure LeBron’s legacy looks a lot better than it is now. Because people don’t like the man for his behaviour post basketball, everyone just rags on him. Say what you will about the man, but never disrespect the player. He helped Jordan to become all time great and Jordan helped Pippen to be a champion.

Two things can be true. Jordan was the GOAT and when it came down to crisis time, of course you wanted the ball in his hands. Of course it was his team and he was the man, superman. But at the same time Pip was an absolute beast and one of the best teammates you could ever have. Of course Pip complicates things by his silly antics post retirement.
