When Self-Help Tips Hurt More Than Help - Can We Talk?

Sometimes Shelf-Help Gurus slogans hurt when you are over 65. Being a senior is a full-time job and we have survived everything thrown at us...but still, we search for answers from people like Tony Robbins and Mel Robbins and others to help with issues still unresolved. They give good advice...but does it always apply to women or men over 65? Is it just for the young?
Here are some I take issue with.
1. STOP Live In The Past
2. No one is coming. No one is coming to help you.
3. You MUST become a Money Master
4. Stop Choosing to be Miserable & Depressed
I take you to the park and we meet some young college students...we go to a new dog park and meet a sassy dog named " Sally" , we stop off at a thrift store and finally, we chat about this life we lead. Desi is taking a week off from singing...because he won't stop now around the house!!!
If you have time could you share the best advice you ever received?
Please know how much we love you

I'm halfway through your video, but I couldn't wait to tell you how much I love what you're saying about "self-help" books and programs. These unrealistic messages turn my hope and gratitude into sorrow and loneliness. As my great senator once said, "People tell you to pull yourself by your bootstraps, but first you've got to have the boots!" I'm 68 and living in a senior building. It will never be smooth, but I believe we're here to walk each other home. I first heard that quote from you! ❤

This episode was such a great message. I hope people hear it that need to. Don't read this self-help stuff and take it to heart without being a critical thinker and seeing if it rings true for your life. I worked pretty hard my whole life and put money away, saved for retirement, and tried to prepare for old age when I stopped working. I've always scrimped and saved and cut corners and thrifted. Suddenly, I'm 70 and was let go of my job 2 years ago. And that was fine. I'm fine because I prepared. But the funny thing is, it took me while to wake up and realize I'm retired now. This is it! This is what I saved for and worked for my whole life. It is OK to use the money I scrimped to put away all these years! It is wonderful thing to give yourself permission to enjoy things and spend a little. To get up and plan your day however you want. It is definitely a very different perspective than even 5 years ago. This next decade is mine...and if I'm lucky I might get 2 decades. But, we don't know and I look around and see people's health fail in one way or another. This is it. This is my time now and I'm trying not to waste a day!

My Dad came to live with me (I was a widow) four years before his death at almost 90 years old. One day while we were having breakfast and his British tea I told him what a wonderful Dad he had been to all of his four kids. He remarked how could I thank him? Oh Debbie he said, We were so poor. I told him I had never thought of us as poor. Not ever. He was a door to door milkman for 32 years and in the summers he would take us one at a time on his route. It was so very exciting because we knocked on an unlocked door of his customer and said loud enough to hear "Milkman", then entered and opened the refrigerator, rearranged items and placed the glass milk bottles inside. So exciting! Later he told me that I never felt poor because my wonderful sweet mother sewed everything that we wore, with the exception of undies and socks and bras. He totally knew and was acknowledging the beautiful and valuable gift my mother had. We would giggle as kids and say she was a "sew-aholic" because she spent so many hours happy as a lark in front of her sewing machine. That morning I hoped that I expressed myself clear enough to let my precious Dad know how valuable he was as a man and as a father. Those four years were so great because for the first time in my life I was an "only" child and had all his attention. It's very important for me to remember the past, my most important memories are a gift to me daily at 74 years old. God Bless you, and all your dear subscribers. Love from Debbie and Dexter-Dog 🐕 my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua 🐶 companion living a quiet crafty life 🏠in southern California. 👍👍🐰🤓💌🙋🧑‍🦽🙏🐾💞⛵💕🤸🐥❤️

@@debbiechaney6607You are a treasure! You lifted my spirits so much tonight when it was really needed. Your gratitude and loving care for your father and your childhood is such a rarity these days! Thank you for sharing that with us. At 67, I too understand parents who were born in the depression and learned to make do. My best memories are growing up in the 49s and 50s. my mom and I lived with my granny for several years. Such a simple wonderful life. Granny made clothes pin dolls for me on Rainy days. I watched her make quilts. I'm in my 70s now, and keep those memories close. I'm alone now, but I still enjoy simple things. I raised 4 daughters, lost my baby son, and divorced, but i still feel I was blessed in so many ways. If I wake up sad sometimes, I let myself cry. It goes away, and I feel better. I've never had a lot of money, but I get by. . Just love your talk today. You have the right idea. From Another S. Calif lady.

I woke up feeling. Lonely and neglected!! Im 70 and was feeling alittle anxious as well. I drove off and decided i was going to get a pedicure and pamper myself! The massage chair was so relaxing to me as i soaked my feet in warm water! I was happy getting my nails cut and i enjoyed picking out a flashy color. Went back home and put on my new colored rhinestone sandals. And met 20 other church members for lunch out. I felt proud when some noticed my new sandals and polish. I had been depressed and decided getting out of the house was good therapy. Its just little things in life that are precious

Thank you Susan! I honestly don’t think I ever received anything in regards to advice that has helped me, but my mother at 64, while dying from Lymphoma, apologized to me for all the times she put cleaning the house as a higher priority than spending time with my brother and me. I have taken what she said and put it in action. If my daughter wants to go to lunch, I drop everything and go. I do get frustrated at times about not having a picture perfect house and then my mother speaks to me and I remember that in the end, my daughter will remember our laughter, but she will not remember if my floor was waxed.

While I believe in being self-aware and reflective, the trap of constantly striving to improve oneself can actually leave us feeling dissatisfied and discontented with who we are. The constant pursuit of self-improvement can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and a lack of self-acceptance. We need balance in all things and that is what I think you so beautifully bring to the proverbial table. Thank you for being you Susan❣️🤗

You are so right Susan regarding Nobody’s Coming. So glad you brought that up. Turning 65 and very dismayed that most all the gurus are teaching about how to be successful and I am so done with that! I have been retired since 58 but still trying to piece it all together. It is not your choice about depression as I know. It is usually for good reason. I was depressed after my 29 year old son died. I went to a book club at a library with my Mom this week. We had been trying to “get into” this club for weeks and weeks. I could not figure this out, I would ask for the book and they would actually make excuses. So I finally said, put me and my Mom down for book club this week, we will be there and walked off, kind of annoyed. We show up and as people were arriving I began to understand the stall tactics. There were only women in this book club, the oldest was 96 years old, then 94, then 93, then 90, some in the 80’s, some in their 70’s, and I was the youngest at 56 years old. My Mom at 84 years old was in the medium age range! We get our snacks, it began, the first question asked was, who read the book? Not even 1/3 of the club raised their hands. The woman in charge, age 82, talked about the book for about 10 minutes and the rest of the time these women talked with each other while they ate their snacks. I had a 90 year old woman beside me, she tells me her current situation, all about her grandkids, that she does quite well on her own and drove herself there! She tells me, we all drive ourselves, even 96 year old Sylvia, nobody tells us what to do. She asks me what I do for a living and I told her, well right now I am living with my Mother after the death of my Father, I am not sure I am doing much actually, she does quite well on her own. She tells me, well you let her do that and that is important, but the kindest gift is that you are living with her and making sure she is okay, nobody in my family does that for me so bless you because that is an incredible gift for her because I know it brings her peace. I almost cried, most people do not understand my choice to live with my Mother during this part of her life but this incredible 90 year old woman knew immediately. It was the best hour of the week and there wasn’t much book clubbing going on? 😂 We got the book for next month, Book 1 of the Jack Reacher series. 🤔 😂 My Mom and I both had a great time and are going back next month. But I really think the Library was protecting these special women. I get it now. And me and Mom are in the club because they all said, cannot wait to see you next month! 💕

Many Christians, it seems to me, are so caught up in the here and now that you would think they plan to stay here forever. They are often bemoaning their circumstances, praying fervently to have better ones. Not accepting that trouble is always going to come, people you love will die, the government will create chaos out of peace, the rain will fall and your basement will flood ; it’s always something. What I so appreciate about your comment to Susan is that you shared a truth about the best way to be at peace and have joy in your life no matter what. Trust God. This world has so many wonderful things to offer. This world has so many ugly , miserable, difficult situations to thrust into our lives. “ This we know, God works for good to those who love him, who are called according to his purpose “ Romans 8:28. There you go! This world is not our final destination. Hold on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Hi Susan.. the best advice I got is when my first marriage at 19 went astray. The social worker said if I allowed negative behaviors in my spouse by not speaking up, it's like saying, it's okay. I was naive, poor self Esteem and probably a little afraid of him. He was abusive at times. On our 4th anniversary I finally had the guts to say I'm too young to be miserable and you don't seem happy so let's end the marriage. Many lessons I learned from then on.

Sometimes I feel like I don’t fit in when people talk about how important their relationship was with their grandmothers. Both of mine had passed before I was born. Same with one grandfather. I only knew one and he passed when I was about 6 years old. Since I was divorced in 1996 after 24 years of marriage I was too busy trying to stay afloat-always managed to pay the rent and bills by working 3 jobs. So after being laid off from a job I worked for 7 years I took early retirement 3 years later. Somehow I survived and it took me until I was 70 to finally realize God had always been by my side. He has been my protector and is always there for me through good and bad times. Things have happened that I thought I could never get through but I’m still here:). I am so blessed and thankful everyday. I’m very happy and no longer worry like I used to. I can only hope He will forgive me for taking so long to realize His Love and Grace. It’s something you can’t explain until it happens. Until it’s my time I try to do as much as I can to do good for others. I have met people who were so much worse off than me but always had their faith in our Heavenly Father and many have been so blessed-so blessed I can now understand why🙏🙏👍♥️♥️♥️

Some sandwiches CANNOT be enjoyed. There can be a LOT of suffering in this valley of tears. And people can feel powerless to change their circumstances, that there is no way out. But there is. It is God. Talk to Him. Ask Him to prove to you that He loves you. Ask Him every day. The Holy Bible says: "Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you."

When we plant a seed rain seals the soil tight around it until the soil's surface heats up on warm spring days. At it reaches its trigger temperature the seed sprouts quickly and the earth's warmth causes the soil surface to crack. A tiny bit of light and carbon dioxide reaches down past the soil's surface to cause a leaf to be stimulated and then that leaf rises from a tightly folded mass of white sprout to turn to a pale green stem. As that sprout unfolds to produce its first leaf it straightens its spine and lifts the crust of earth weighing 1000 times its weight like a muscular weight lifter, a miracle of life that doesn't stop until it's produced its flower, its fruit, produced its seed, weathered through fall's unpredictability and winter's freeze to scatter its bountiful seed upon the earth for the next generation. Plants are small miracles of life we can watch unfold, if we slow down and watch.

Suzanne was a conundrum. She was very into alternative health and she got about a hundred different shots or vitamin supplements every single day to keep her body in superb functioning capacity and yet she got the vaccine for covid and that's what caused her turbocharged cancer to take her life. Strange she fell for the hype on that. I fell for it but I wasn't as immersed as she in alternative health and too the fear Factor kicked in because that's what they used to manipulate the entire world. She feared dying. I guess it does make sense that she got it because she had a lot of fear in her about growing old and her body not functioning like a 30-year-old which is what she preferred. She definitely had a good run for her money though. Her husband definitely loved her and I think her son grew to love her as well and she had friends I believe, more or less. I actually have a lot of her books and read them but I just don't believe one should always try to be physically like one is 30 years old. Frankly I'm about her age and I looked better than her, without all the shots and all the supplements on a daily basis and all the thousands spent to defy the aging process. . But each to his or her own.

The best advice I've heard is that you can only control you. You have little say in how others are going to react...which also means, don't do things to purposely upset others. But if they are determined to be in a grumpy mood, overly competitive, whatever negative thing they like to hang onto, you can't stop them. Be happy on your own. Blessings to you and Desi from Midas and me.

They don't gear their programs to over 65 because we are irrelevant, and yet we continue to be the fasestt growing population. But if they acknowledge that, they will have to acknowledge that they too, are aging. Money is overrated, but it pays the rent or mortgage and puts food on the table. I did all the self help stuff in my 30s. I'm too busy making peace with my aging body, my saggy skin, and still feeling relevant as an aging dancer/artist. All while I continue to look for supplemental income and cultivate a relationship with a good friend. I have a master plan at 68. but sometimes it seems overwhelming.

You have made a very good point about aging. Often "it takes one to know one"; and there is a strong fear of aging in the North American culture. If the self-help "experts" have no strong experiences with the elderly, and feel that they need to show themselves as "vibrant, current" , they will not have much practical advice for the elderly. At age 84 and as a former Al -Anon member, I value one of its slogans, which applies to so much in life :"Take what you like, and leave the rest".

Mel Robbins & Tony Robbins have their place in this world, as do you with your channel. Take the good & leave the rest behind. Different personalities & delivery of their message that they want to deliver. And different audiences for what is to be delivered that day in the video. And, yes I agree with you that at different stages of our lives we believe & want to hear different messages. One size doesn't fit all!

Thank you. I was just thinking the same about self-help. I saw something today to answer self-help questions and the questionnaire only went to age 55. This life has been recreated to reject seniors and bow down to young people. I encourage young people to respect and first learn from seniors rather than self-help videos. Thats right Susan, life is short and wisdom comes from those who have lived it.

To me, it's "all things in balance"-- 'Living' in the past is not the same thing as Remembering the past. Remembering can be comforting and pleasant; or hurtful and debilitating... depending on the memory that is focused upon. Balance-- always in balance. Don't cease to Remember, but Don't "LIVE" there and Miss the present and the hope of the Future. Just my opinion-- from a 54 year old 😊

For 20 years I’ve scrapbooked and it’s a craft that celebrates the past and the present. The present, however, becomes the past. I get so much joy remembering the past, raising my kids, helping to raise my stepkids and enjoying every moment with my grandson. Without those photos we would forget so many wonderful moments. The trick is not to get maudlin about what was but to embrace all the wonder. It’s also important to embrace the age you are as that’s something you just can’t change. Each age has its blessings as well as challenges. Enjoy as often as you can (How did I get to be 73? :) )

Hello from Ontario Canada Susan and Desi, well another home run , I loved when you touched on the memory of your Grandfather, I like when you discuss different ways of think of life and I so agree when I was 19 to now that I’m am 69 my goals, my hopes and fears have all shifted. Each week you give me food for thought, but at 19 you are looking to the future and at 69 I hope for a future, I hope to see my only son perform in a Broadway Play, to be a grandmother, to stay mentally sound and physically healthy. Susan I love my garden and to touch and work the earth is so rewarding, I use to love clothes and now I love plants and flowers, again we shift, we each are individuals, some days it’s hard to stay happy, I get sad, and have anxiety, but you touch my heart when you said you did it alone and so have I, I’ve started over just like you, we may not be an island, but I like the independence I have accomplished and found, well I’ve gone on long enough, but again I hope you realize how much you are appreciated and love by people you may never meet, thank you and God bless, until next Saturday night, have a beautiful week❤️🇨🇦🇺🇸❤️🍀🌱☘️💐🪴

I can't remember a particular piece of advice I got when very young. But as a teen my mother started to tell me to not wear my heart on my sleeve when it came to men. And she also told me to never chase after them, but to let them pursue me. I never forgot that and did follow her advice. As far as the past goes, our memories are of the past. Our past made us by living and learning. My favorite music which can make my day is from the music I lived through as a child. Because my parents played Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin etc. Today I just love Sinatra! And the 70's was my music era and those songs take me back to my happy times of youth. I don't live today in the past, but I look fondly on it and I think the past interjects itself into who we are. love Desi's tie!

What he shares isn't going to help me in my 70s except that he says gratefulness & giving to others is key. By the grace of God I'm still here. Am so grateful for life, love and my family. My youngest grandchildren are the age of those girls in college and are working hard. No money is only good to take care of needs but is also needed to help others. One of your videos showed up in my feed last week. It arrived as a true gift. My 60th birthday was a month ago. I love being 60. I went into the birthday with delight that I have had every experience that I ever wanted. (Yes there is a lovely stack of experiences I didn't want.) But to have lived 60 years on earth. To have had this long of a shot is a joy. As I told friends and family. Everything from here on is extra sprinkles and candles. Your channel radiates that. However, my life is also in relationship transition. It has been for the past couple of years, but it has reached a point where two kids who once were passionate about each other, are now living in separate homes. We keep in touch because we have kids we love. It's been a new road, and not everyday that joyful, get up and go thing. Last night, as I drove home solo, to my house, I had a thought from you about getting up, and going onward. To fill me life with things I am interested in. With that I booked 4 different lunch, brunch meet up days with friends and family. Made arrangements to enjoy Mother's Day with my oldest. This afternoon my neighbor mentioned her chorale group was performing tomorrow. I am planning on doing that. I read a book this morning. I watched this happy video tonight. Right now, your advice is spot on for me. Your beautiful created videos add to your message. Thank you.

Susan, thank you for much for sharing with us! The best advice I ever heard about life is “to live until you die.” This means to keep doing what you love to do and spend time with others as much as you can. Turn off the TV and computer once in awhile and seek the company of other people. I am 73 and work in a childcare center. I cannot tell you the joy I feel three days a week when I go in and work with the babies and toddlers! Their smiles are genuine when they see me and I am in the moment when I am with them. This keeps me from living too much in the past and getting melancholy. My friend who is older has worked in an animal shelter for many years and it has kept her young, too! Keep giving of yourself while there is breath in your body! My mother , when in hospice, encouraged her aides and nurses daily. She refused to focus on dying but, instead, smiled and had an encouraging word for them! Live and give until you die!

One of the best sayings I ever heard was something my friend said to me when I was going through a very painful divorce. She said you aren't GOING to get through this, you ARE getting through this. Something about that rang profound for me that the healing was not off in the future it was something I had already taken some steps on the road to and I just had to continue walking forward to get through it. That was a real comfort to me and something I have brought to mind when I have had other life challenges.

Well, he is a prolific writer who's been writing for many years. I ordered his book, "Life is Messy." Oh my, what an amazing book - full of inspiration, wisdom gained during his own life struggles. When I was in my early 50s, my office husband told me it seemed I had found the secret to happiness and he wanted to know what it was. "It's a choice," I said. I just turned 67 last week and it's not that simple anymore. The big losses pile up, health issues rear their ugly heads, and money--not wealth--is an ever-present consideration when you're on a fixed income. It all does come down to love in the end and I find comfort in that. I've had more than my fair share of it and continue to have it. What I really yearn for these days more than happiness is peace of mind. With all that's happening in the world these days, I might have to go live in a cave somewhere to get that. lol

As seniors in our younger years we went through unrequited loves and thought we would die. But, now we laugh and think how foolish to give my heart to someone who doesn’t love me. As seniors we came to several crossroads roads and whatever crossing we chose being good or bad made us stronger. We are sages seasoned with wisdom, prudence and good judgment and have lived life

O my little poet my little fingers can’t type fast enough to tell you how spot on you are. I’m so saddened by the once size fits all advice. Especially now when I’m trying to find my way through my 60’s and beyond. Watching your videos turns all that “once size fit all advice” upside down shakes it up and tosses it out the window. You are incredibly tuned in to us over 60 sweeties. I’m slowly accepting my age and you are helping me on my journey. Gods Blessings to you and your family ❤

💕‘No one is coming!. Feels like that most the time for me since widowhood . I feel totally alone at 72. I’m not. Just feels like it. Thank you! Finally, sound reason in a generation of ‘pull yourself up by your own bootstraps’ self help nonsense. Thank you💕

I live in Kzoo, home of WMU which is full of aspiring 19 something’s. Today’s young adults remind me so much of teens in my era. I graduated in 1978 and honestly they look a lot like we did with their fashion and attempt to be “hippies”. They bring tons of energy and youthful perspective to this town which is a refreshing change from my hometown of GR.

What a terrible thing to say to someone, that no one is coming to help. So many times I've had people reach out and help me. People that I would never have thought to ask. I think people are basically good hearted and want to help. Those self help people don't have a clue!

I guess Mel Robbins doesn't have any friends. And as for Joyce Meyer if she doesn't believe you should live in the past why is she trying to keep her face looking like it did in the past? ( unsuccessfully, I might add.)

I got some very sage advice from an older lady I worked with many, many years ago; she said to me, “Carol, when you are old and sitting in your rocking chair on your front porch, you won’t look back and think of how beautiful your white sheets looked, or how clean and spotless your home was. You are going to look back and think of all the precious memories you created with your children, friends and family.” That stuck with me and from that point on, I concentrated on making memories instead of worrying about how clean my towels and sheets were and if my sheets were ironed (yes, I’m of the age where our mother’s ironed the sheets and tea towels).

The " Self Help" industry is helping no one but themselves. To our money!!! Tony Robbins is at the top of the list which is why he's got big fancy homes. They charge a fortune for their appearances to peddle their merchandise and "wisdom". Susan, you made more sense here then any of them.

Hello Susan, you may find this post a bit unexpected coming from "an older than you" guy who is nearing 76 years young! I must say that you're videos are impressively inspiring and so refreshing even for a MAN, who is getting ready to launch himself into a journey of self awareness. Much of what you talk about applies to men as well in that one must first be comfortable in one's own skin, if one is to be successful in seeking out enlightenment. That journey begins in a couple of months. I want to thank you for lifting my spirits and re-igniting the fire, that has up to now, been smouldering, for what seems an eternity. I'll be leaving my home base for what certainly will be a journey of a lifetime. My life changed last Mother's Day, when my wife passed away. Perhaps this is my journey to find answers to questions I continue to struggle with. By the way, I'll be traveling in a home on wheels (solar powered Pro Master high top") that has NO boundaries. My golf clubs and Kayak will accompany me! Take care and keep inspiring. My handle is: "On the Road A Ken".

I totally depend on Jesus and my faith, love your show and you are so right , my journey was in 020 and I had emergency surgery amidst Covid and the love of my life for 42 years died of Covid while I was recovering and I had a son and a daughter and after burying him in January , my only son died in April, so you are right I can’t get up and say well I am good today, I am 78 and alone quite a bit so people with self help advise can not tell me anything, thank you so much for your show it does lift me up.

I'm 76. I've gotten good advice from this site from time to time. This was the 1st video that I felt was so wrong. I find that life really is as happy as one decides it is by choosing to recognize how strong and fearless we can be. Too many of gals in my age group & even younger feel sorry for themselves, fear everything, & give up. I'm not so sure about Tony Robbins, but Mel seems right on with truths that really do fit any age. I believe us "old folks" need to stop looking at what we lost instead of what we have left or even gained. For me, an attitude of gratitude simply works.

I'm 67 and have listened to Mel Robbins for years she's challenged me to travel and to deal with panic attacks , just got back from Texas traveling alone thanks to Mel Robbins. Not sure how much you read or studied her podcasts but most of her self help is free. Don't rule out the professionals they do know what their talking about.

That quote from Joyce Meyer. "Stop living in the past" Think she was referring to : when we have a shitty life stop going back and reliving it. To many people can not get pass past hurts, family defunction they keep going back and it continues their hurt and they suffer. Take the good times, the people, everything and move forward. God seems to be a forward person, someone we pray to for our future wishes. Desi was singing on the bed! He brings joy to us all. ❤🐾❤

My best advice from my Mother when it felt as if my life was so hard, and I might not make it through... She said, "I've been living a long time, been through so many hard times, but Somehow, things always seem to work out, and I am still here." ... My conclusion; ...and indeed she was correct. All things work out somehow. Best advice from my Mother. 🌹 "All things work out for good, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 Amen. God bless your week ahead! Another favorite life advice: "When someone shows you WHO THEY ARE, BELIEVE THEM." -Maya Angelo * I Don't care for her poetry or politics but she was correct on this one matter. *Don't make excuses for them, or give them another chance to be who you want them to be, they NEVER WILL BE THAT PERSON. 💯 "Don't try to change them into who you think they are, THEY ARE NOT!!!"

Hi Susan, I enjoyed your video tonight and, as usual, always look forward to a new one. I thought I would post it on Facebook so people who may not be familiar with you might view it. You certainly have added so much to my life and I wanted to share you with other folks who may not have discovered you. I am 83 and you always add so much to my otherwise dull life. I am alone and have been for many years now. I do okay, but I do have my moments of loneliness. You are a lifesaver and someone I look forward to seeing every weekend.

TY. I talk with Jesus every morning before I get out of my bed and ask him to direct my steps throughout the day. He is full of surprises and meets my need for the day. The meaning of life is to allow him to grow me into his likeness. I'm 71, living in a senior complex and having the time of my life. Bless you.

The self help people are there to make money. As we get older we need love not money. They don’t often mention love and kindness and their advice is very cold. When I lost my husband recently, these people were coming on to my feed and making me feel even lonelier and more anxious. Susan, you are my light❤
