I'm going back to basics in this video - basic synthesis waveforms, that is! I give a talky talky look at some of the new waveforms and wavetables in KRC Mathwaves Vol. 4 and the very lovely sounding "Shark" wavetables which are a completely new thing. (And there are more than 1000 of them in the new update to Mathwaves.)
Learn more about the latest enhancements to my insane library of more than 120,000 wavetables for Korg modwave, Serum, Vital, Bitwig, Surge XT, and nearly any hardware wavetable synth including Eurorack hardware wavetable modules. Along the way, I drop a few synth programming tips, refer to myself often using the royal we, explain PWM (pulse width modulation), and turn sucky triangle waves into something more useful and awesome.

Wow. The mix here between vox and synth is pretty fucked up here. Not sure what happened. There was a lot of bleed between my lav and my headphones. And I failed to compensate for it correctly. That was new. Anyway, you get the idea. Go get Mathwaves already.

Lots of great info here! How much storage does this collection take on the Modwave hardware?

Hey @SouthShoreSonics, thanks! So, the original collection of about 36,000 wavetables (Mathwaves Vol 1., Mathwaves Vol 2, Various "Explore" Sets, RAIM, and MBand Wavetables) is 1.8 Gigs in .mwbundle format and can fit all at once in a hardware modwave. That was by design. However, later collections like the VAE wavetables have a lot more 64-frame tables and so take up equal amounts of space each. So you can't really get *all* the wavetables from the *entire* collection into a hardware modwave at one time. As for the wavetables being covered in this specific video: The KRC Math Vol 4 set is small at 11.5 MB and the Shark wavetables (1024 64-frame tables) weigh in at 512 MB.

All that being said, I should probably decimate some of the more interesting VAE collections specifically for modwave hardware as, practically speaking, many of those tables could be reduced to 8-ish frames without much perceptible difference. (Somewhat surprisingly, the AI models I created seemed to learn an essentially time-linear morph between waveshapes. That kind of blew my mind.)

Seems you take the right way! I like this ones better than the bunch of random waves of first packs.

Thanks for the kind comments! I’m glad you like some of the most recent explorations! Of course, there are lots of different things to explore in the world of sub-musical sound (which is what synthesis is) and the universe of musically-useful single-cycle waveforms is both more limited and wildly DIFFERENT than most folks imagine. And not every algorithmically-created sound lends itself to permutations like this. But lately, I’ve been focused on waveform categories that we CAN explore in this more nuanced way. Up next… Bézier curves! So, subscribe if you haven’t so you never miss my talky talky commentary and explorations!
