Bands that got a way with a major lineup change: 1. AC/DC 2. Van Halen 3. Genesis (Phil Collins replacing Peter Gabriel) 4. Alice In Chains 5. Bad Company (Brian Howe replacing Paul Rogers) bands that did not get away with a major lineup change 1. Genesis ((Calling All Stations) 2. Motley Crue (Jon Corobi) 3. Foreigner (the short time Lou Gramm was not there and now with the current Singer) 4. Stone temple Pilots 5. Queen (Anyone other then Freddie Mucury no matter how talented they are)

The Motley Crue album with John Corabi is excellent. I enjoyed it more than any of the ‘classic’ Vince stuff. All the stuff they’ve released ever since it came out with Vince back in the band has been dreadful.

The lead singer of a band leaving always bring me to one of my favourite bands. Three Days Grace. Adam Gontier was the front man and the lyrical genius for that band because it was HIS band. But after the fourth album he left and formed Saint Asonia. Which I love because it still sounds like Three Days Grace since it's the singer! Three Days Grace replaced Adam with the lead singer from My Darkest Days band. So when I hear Three Days Grace now, all I hear is My Darkest Days. They may as well be called My Darkest Days Grace now. So I am not a fan of when the lead singer leaves or gets replaced. To me, the lead singer will always be what I associate the band with because it's his voice we hear. Now for Alice In Chains it is a bit different. Jerry Cantrell sang a lot on the later albums because of Layne's drug addiction and being messed up. So to replace Layne isn't technically that bad since he is no longer here with us, and Jerry sang just as much as Layne did at times on the albums. As for Scott Weiland and STP goes, I am 100% in agreement with Scott being the life and soul of STP. The other members had a band called "Talkshow" back in the late 90s when Scott was off doing his solo 12 Bar Blues album. The guy in that band sounded and looked a lot like Scott too ironically. But the new guy in STP sounds great, but at the end of the day it isn't Scott Weiland. Great video though with incredible topics! Keep up the awesome work, Brendon and Anthony!

I just wrote a paragraph comment too and I forgot to mention Three Days Grace. I agree with you on that one. I still can enjoy the new stuff, partially because I enjoy My Darkest Days, and partially because I like hokey songs. Cuz to be honest, if it wasn't for how the musicians in the band tone their instruments, you wouldn't be able to tell it was Three Days Grace. Saint Asonia is Three Days Grace leveled up. The band with the new singer just don't write good lyrics, mostly. I do feel like each album gets a little bit better but Adam is such a great songwriter that it doesn't even compare to Saint Asonia's output. I need more from them so desperately lol. I also sometimes wonder how the rest of My Darkest Days feels about being dumped for their singer's brother's famous band. Seems like a moneygrabbing, lazy, back stab to me.

It’s like someone telling me when I should quit my job??? Why are we so fascinated by when a band should hang it up? The consumer has the ultimate power to pour their $ into a band or not. If no one is interested, the band will hang it up but so long as they are making a living why should they stop? It’s a personal decision whether you are a shell of your former self or not.

Technically Lynyrd Skynyrd does have an original member in the band. Rickey Medlocke. Depending on how you look at the timeline of the band. Technically started in 1964 with numerous band names and line up changes. They didn’t record anything officially until 1971 that’s when Rickey joined played drums from 71-72’ then moved to guitar in 72’ left shortly after that. The only song Rickey played drums on was the tune “One More Time” that was later released on Street Survivors. It was recorded in 71’ So if you consider that Rickey is an OG member of some sorts.

Hard truth . Motley , GnR , Bon Jovi are all really bad. It’s the vocals , I thought Guns were excellent from the band stand point . 35 , 40 years is a long time for any career . That’s why when I see a guy like Paul Rodgers or Rod Stewart , still stellar , I’m in amazement. I saw Jimi Jamison in a Casino , year or so before his death, that guy was nails that night and it pumped the theatre with energy . I see Vince and Rose and it’s a downer ..

@Brendon Snyder and Anthony(I will not try your last name LOL) I will never go to the great white, Queensryche, skid row concerts or buy anything after lead singer was removed. Sabastian Bach, Jack Russell and Geoff Tate was done dirty by the rest of the band members. It pisses me off that they let the ego get in the way with the fans opinion. I would like to see what you two think about this topic.

I don't fault Great White at all. Russell was a raging alcoholic who would show up late for shows or could barely perform. A band can't function for long when dealing with that. As far as bands like A.I.C. or STP, the singer overdoses and dies. Not the bands fault they are an addict that basically ended themselves. They should be able to continue on and I'll support them.

@GremlinBones

In my opinion, if a singer changes it shouldn't be considered a different band. It's no different than changing any other member of the band. If ALL the original members are gone, then they shouldn't be considered the same band. BUT a band should hang it up if they aren't sounding good any more. I do believe it is up to the band members who remain to decide if a member leaves, whether or not they should continue under the same moniker. Bands like Linkin Park haven't hung it up but after Chester passed they don't know what to do with new material and I totally understand that. I respect that in a band. It makes them feel more like real people. And sometimes, I think a band just has to pick a new singer who is equally as skilled or unique as their previous singer, if they are going to continue. Because their are so many of those classic rock bands that their famous line up isn't how they started out. Look at Journey, or Styx. You guys mentioned Van Halen too. How about Pink Floyd? They all made it work. REO Speedwagon, I just realized has changed singers in their early years and I'd just hadn't known it because I didn't pay as much attention when I was younger. I think all of their singers are extremely talented and work for the band. Both of those eras are iconic. That works for some bands. Bands need to change as they go or things will be boring. I respect the musicians decisions. True, some bands do it just for the money and it doesn't sound as good. But that doesn't mean they have to hang it up. If I don't like it, I just don't have to listen to it. I can't imagine a world where Def Leppard hung it up just because the drummer had his accident. That seems unfair. The bottom line is, a band should hang it up if it feels right. Some of these older bands have said they won't make albums but they'll tour but they don't sound good. Motley Crue needs to stop. Guns N Roses need to stop. They don't sound good anymore. They don't make new music. And they've quit like twice now. A band that says they are quitting, need to just stop and not come back two years later. The Rolling Stones are still making albums, and from what I've heard, the general consensus is that they are still good albums. Paul McCartney, the man is a wonderful musician. He still rocks. To me, if a band is good enough, they can outlast and outperform time, hardships and changing members. The band Kamelot has changed singers like 4 times at this point and each era is great. They just get better or stay equally as good as they were before (depending on the fan of course). A singer is integral, yes, but so are all the other members. Going back to REO Speedwagon, I think they worked through the changing singers because the songs were good, the musicians were fantastic and so it stands the test of time. Iron Maiden changed singers and it still worked. Judas Priest changed singers for a bit and it still worked. If the whole band is good at what they do and works good together, they can play until they die, in my opinion. Yes is another example. But if there aren't any original members left, then it's not the same band. The only exception to this rule is a band like GWAR or Slipknot, bands like that where it can work because of the gimmick (essentially). Not everytime but just about. I also just thought about Blink-182 changing singers. I know some people didn't like the era with Skiba but personally, I enjoyed it and really wished we had gotten at least one more album with him in the band. But even still, they made it work for them. Deep Purple is another one who had lineup changes and still do great stuff. I personally get a little peeved when people talk about a band not being the same band just because the singer changed. What about "bands" like Ghost who are really just about the lead singer but they pretend that they are a unit together? If Tobias Forge leaves Ghost, then yeah, the group is dead, because he made everything about him. The Nameless Ghouls don't matter, they are just a backdrop. To me, that's not a band. It's just Tobias Forge using an alias.

If there are at least 2 left then they can use the original name but add Reimagined to the end of the name. And if it's a different lead singer with at least 2 other members. Add the lead singer's name to the end Ex: Queen + Adam Lambert...This is just my opinion though. Thanks.

Like Anthony said, it's subjective. But personally, I think a band should hang it up when they can't perform well live anymore! Concerts are expensive these days and if the band they're paying to see sounds horrible, then that's a disservice to the fans. Yeah, if the band is still happy doing what they do, that's fine. But if the band isn't good live anymore, that's something else!

I'm a long time fan of Pearl Jam but sadly the last 2 albums (Gigaton/ Dark Matter) had 2 good songs on them & the previous 2 albums (Lightning Bolt/ Backspacer) sucked 100%. So 4 crap albums + longer wait time between albums proves the band isn't interested in working together anymore. Also the "producer" co-wrote every song on Dark Matter. Brendon, here's a question/topic. "How big should your record collection be?". I lost my original collection, so I have been rebuying a lot of the lost albums (but not all), and adding a few new choices (that I should have brought). However my personal rule is that every album I buy must have at least 90% great songs on it otherwise I won't buy it. I have digital versions (FLAC & DSF) of a gazillion albums, but I wanted vinyl for a certain few. The collection is now at about 150 albums and I find myself thinking about buying more but when I review their track listings, so many just don't make the 90% cut. And another question is "Can you be addicted to buying music". I look at you continually buying and I wonder if you could even stop (permanently) , or would you explode 🙂

in Quiet Riot's defense, BASSIST (and backup vocalist) RUDY SARZO (who was part of the classic Quiet Riot lineup with singer Kevin DuBrow, guitarist Carlos Cavazo & drummer Frankie Banali) has been back in the band since 2021... although not technically an "original" member, Rudy Sarzo WAS with them in 1978-1979 BEFORE they were singed in the United States with DuBrow, original guitarist Randy Rhoads and original drummer Drew Forsyth - Quiet Riot broke up in 1979 when they couldn't get a record deal in the United States and were frustrated their albums were only being released in Japan. Rudy Sarzo & Randy Rhodes joined Ozzy's band in 1981 (Rhodes died in the plane crash in March of 1982) and then Rudy left in September 1982 (due to Ozzy's heavy drinking after Rhodes' death) and re-joined Quiet Riot part of the from 1982-1985 when they wrote, recorded & released their first 2 (and most successful) American albums, 'Metal Health' & 'Condition Critical' (and their only charting hits "Cum on Feel the Noize"', "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" & ""Mama Weer All Crazee Now"). Sarzo was also with the classic lineup from 1997-2003 for their comeback album 'Alive and Well' (1999) and follow up 'Guilty Pleasures' (2001) Live in the 21st Century (2003) Live & Rare Volume 1 (2005) Live at the US Festival 1983 (2012) ... guitarist Alex Grossi (who joined the band in 2006 (before signer DuBrow died of a drug overdose in 2007 and drummer Banali died of cancer in 2020) has been with them ever since along with Love/Hate singer Jizzy Pearl (who has been with them 2013-2016 and 2019-now) and Banali's replacement on drums Johnny Kelly (who also replaced Sal Abruscato in Type O Negative).

Two main reasons for bands to hang it up: When the singer is merely a shadow of his/her former self, vocals painful to hear. When too many original or longtime members are gone. Foreigner is out there playing some nights without ONE original member, even Mick Jones not being there! It just comes off as a greedy money grab, trying to capitalize on established band name.

Brendon, in regards to Quiet Riot, Rudy Sarzo who’s the original bass player & Alex Grossi who’s the longest member that’s been in the band except for Sarzo….they are keeping the music alive for the people who love it…..if they didn’t have that….they most likely close the chapter and do something original….bit what comes with that is like starting over.

Rudy is actually not the original bassist. They made two albums before Metal Health with bassist Kelly Garni. In fact Rudy does not play on the song Metal Health that was the bassist before him Chuck Wright who was part of this newer line up with Alex Grossi until they asked Rudy to return for name recognition because Frankie Banali had passed away. So as I said, there are no original members left in the band. But they do have lots of name recognition with who is there which helps.

I have not talked to many Americans in my lifetime but some of them told me two things about America: 1. police are above the law there 2. Jon Bon Jovi is a jerk and nobody really likes him in the States. I know that it is definitely not true but I still remember a guy from New Jersey who told me that there's only one "true" New Jerseyan - Bruce Springsteen. So it is nice to hear good things about Jon Bon Jovi in this video. And I still cannot accept the current "Accept", which is more of a Wolf Hoffmann's solo project than the old band I still love.

When it comes to Accept I like the albums with Mark better than what Udo's been releasing in U.D.O. Wolf tried for years to get Udo back in Accept so it was his choice to not be there.

Jon Bon Jovi a jerk? I've only read what a good dude, down to earth and ego is in check, kind of guy he is. He surely has a great work ethic and although I'm not at all a fan, I've always respected him greatly for the human being he is, people in the know have many favorable things to say about him. Many great policeman out here in the States, but the small minority of bad cops really put a stain on the whole profession! Cheers!

That’s people calling him a jerk when really they mean that they hate the band and his image..

As much as I hate seeing Motley Crue embarass themselves it's their perogative to still tour and make music and if fans want to pay for that then thats fine. But when bands have zero original members left I think they should stop touring. Seeing Foreigner with members that have only been in the band since the mid 2000's is basically just a cover band. Its not Foreigner

Van Halen should never change their name Eddie is still there and its his name and David was not the center piece, VAN HALEN was not big because of Daves vocals or showmanship it was eddies playing so why change it, David was somewhat a part but he was a lounge type guy sorry Im not a huge Dave guy I know people are but he was a showman more than a voice

Stop worrying about original members and just enjoy the music and watching bands in concerts

I've tried that with Foreigner's only studio without Lou Gramm and Deep Purple's Holy Water album, and I listened to them one after another, and they were generic rock album a and b. Both singers were trying to be hard rock or like Sammy Hagar.

So you would go see a band with no original members and pay top dollar for the band name essentially? You could easily just hear those tunes from a decent cover band at your local bar.

People need to get past the lineup because through Apple Music I’ve come across some amazing bands then I find out they been around for over 20 years I’m not going to stop enjoying this new found band just because of a lineup change

Disagree. If they want to make music, go right ahead. Nothing says you have to purchase or listen. In fact, I think classic rock stations need to play new material from their core bands if it exists. At least give it a chance.

Metallica should have probably hung it up after the Black album, both in terms of releasing and performing...they have become too big and too empty since then...

Lets.see. jon bon jovi is.a.sold.out biden supporter who hasnt been able to sing his hits for 9 years! He still took money from his fans though! Don dokken should.have retired over 10 years ago! Love ratt and the boys but Stephen should have retired from live shows years ago! Bas should have retired from performing live years ago! Paul Stanley should have retired years ago from performing live! Mark slaughter should have retired years ago! Now the new 22 year old singer for firehouse is really good! I think if you can get another singer that can sing the bands songs like they should be heard and also keep some of the key members of our favorite bands with a new singer that sounds really similar, I would continue to pay to see that band!

I love Bon Jovi, Don Dokken, Paul Stanley, Stephen Pearcy and Sebastian Bach who can both still sing. I’d much rather have the original singer who sings in a lower register than the some unknown person who has no business being with the band and is only there to sound like the original guy. If I want that I’ll go see a tribute show. Otherwise I’m there to see the original guys. People age, they get older, it’s part of life.
