When should I lime my lawn? For most cool season lawns, the answer is in the fall. However, it's more complicated than that. It's important to know the difference between calcitic and dolomitic lime and how they impact nutrient levels in your soil. Acidic soil is most easily corrected with lime treatments, and doing a soil test and looking at a soil analysis gives you information about your soil's acidity. Aside from weighing dolomitic lime vs calcitic lime, there is also gypsum to consider. We break down the basics of fall liming and why it's done with aeration and seeding.

VT tested my soil in western VA and showed a PH of 5.5 recommending 140 lbs lime per 1K of turf. I put down 15-30 lbs on each application (whenever resources allow) and the second year the grass started looking much better. Also drop 1-2 lbs of nitrogen annually and apply an insecticide to reduce grub/vole damage. I follow the advice of LCN and the combination of Lime, fertilizer and trace minerals has given me the darkest green lawn over surrounding properties. [I used Agricultural & Dolomite lime] My hobby is gardening and people cannot believe the produce coming from an old deprived patch of grass.

Might have missed it in your talk, but worth mentioning, I put lime down, 3 time, in spring, then, fall, then spring, to get that pH in the right zone, because I read somewhere that fertilizer uptake by tttf is impacted negatively by lower pH. Maybe its true, my yard seems happier and I don't want to waste money on fertilizer (which is crazy expensive now!). Love your videos, and hate fungus, poa, violets........

A lot of times it can take a couple of application and a few seasons to get the Ph where it needs to be. Dont get discouraged and soil test yearly. Try and get that Ph up to around 6.2-6.5.

Thank you for sharing this information in this video. I have some questions.... First, I live in Massachusetts. I have not tested for Ph. When I've put lime down, in the spring, the lawn gets greener in 2 to 3 weeks. The same, in the fall. So, is it okay that I put lime down in January, or February, before a snowfall ? Will the added moisture from melted snow over the lime, when the ground is not necessarily frozen, help strengthen the grass? Thus, when spring comes along, will the grass have gotten a head start and be more healthy? I have another question about moss, but I'll wait. Thanks.
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance 4 года назад
If your soil sample is reading a low Ph it is time to apply lime. There really isnt a bad time to apply lime. Lime takes a long time to get into the soil and start neutralizing. The best thing is to get a soil test done and see exactly how much lime you are really going to need first.

How fast can i do a 2nd treatment? On the fall im gonna earate my lawn and re seed as well as top dress should i lime 2? I feel overwelm as this is my 1st time doing lawns. I give much respect to garderners as i though being a garderner/land scaper was only cutting grass, planting flowers and thatz it!!! Boy was i wrong. @PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance

You really need to do a soil sample to evaluate the soil. That will tell you how much lime you need. You can put lime down anytime during the year. When you aerate you lawn is a good time since there will be some holes the lime can fall into.

@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance 5 лет назад
Hi Pat! If your pH is that high, I wouldn’t put down any lime. If you need calcium, go for gypsum instead. Fall is for getting in a foundation for roots, and your plan definitely promotes that.

Certain types of sulfur are the typical method for lowering pH, yes. We personally like a high quality top soil blended with mushroom compost for lawn areas if that's something available in your area.

Unfortunately we do not have a lot of experience with Centipede. If the soil is hard and compacted liquid aeration or mechanical aeration will never hurt

It's interesting listening to this relative to my soil in Indianapolis. We have A LOT of dissolved limestone in our water. Simply watering with tap water increases pH. As a result, the calcium and magnesium in my soil are absolutely through the roof. Calcium is well over 400ppm and Mg around 75ppm. pH somehow only at 7.5 (so not really horrible yet). Shoot, our water's pH is 7.8. For me, it's going to be elemental sulfur at some point in the future and applying it at core aeration might be a good start.
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance

Wow, thanks for sharing, Ed! It's crazy how much impact just local water can have on soil conditions. Keep us up to date on how your use of sulfur goes!

I have a question I want to lay new lawn turf and my top soil has been added but we had really bad rain in the UK and my one half of my garden has been flooded with bad rain, now my soil is mucky im guessi ng my soil drainage is bad so by adding shingles and lime whT that speed up my soil drainege and can I still lay my lawn turf on mucky soil? Thank you Keep it up
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance 4 года назад
I would honestly fix the draining issue first. I if floods that can be a concern later down the road. If you do lay the new turf on top and have another heavy rain it can wash it away. Fix issues first than lay the turf.

What are your thoughts on these so called fast acting liquid limes? Most are not really lime at all but are any chemically equivalent?
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance 4 года назад
Fast acting lime is just that. It helps get the pH up fast but wont hold it there. If you need a pH adjustment we like to add a fast acting lime application along with just a regular lime application. This help get the pH up faster and holds longer

I am about a two hour drive N. of you. Using a pricey ph meter all the surrounding lawns measure about 5.5. I recently put down topsoil, 50% screened clay/50% compost, to help level the lawn. That stuff reads a ph of 4. Do I give those areas an extra heavy dose of lime? Been using Solu-Cal for faster results. Comments?
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance
@PicturePerfectLawnMaintenance 5 лет назад
With a pH of 5.5 fescue would need some really heavy liming anyway, let alone if you're introducing even more acidic material. Solu-Cal is good stuff if it's within your budget, but it's going to be a several year process with multiple heavy applications to get that pH where it needs to be.
