I picked up archery about a year ago and it's quickly become a favorite hobby. I recall encountering your channel a ways back as archery has always been a casual interest of mine. I've still only been to the range a handful of times but I just wanted to stop by and let you know that your channel (among other things) managed to nudge one more person to actually make their way out to the range, and every video on traditional archery is super appreciated as there aren't any places I know of to learn traditional thumb draw styles locally.
Just bought my first bow, it's a Strata Long bow through my local archery shop here in Texas. I'm non-patiently waiting for it!! Thanks for the video this really sets in stone why young archers should make choice to get their own bow. It can all be summed up at 11:35
Glad to have you back mr sensei! i fully agree with you, it really helps a lot to get your own equipment as soon as possible, tho i have to say it does help if you have shot for a couple months at least, so you have an idea of how to properly shoot, and hopefully asked clubmembers to try their bow to test for poundage/how they feel.
About 3 weeks ago I ordered my first bow (never having shot before) I got a 50lb hunting style takedown recurve (I soon came to learn I probably shouldn’t of got a 50lb bow) but after 3 weeks of binge watching your videos I shot my bow for the first time in the backyard and honestly felt like I had been shooting for months!
This is my approach. bingeing instructional videos to understand proper form and remove my assumptions of whats "right" before i shoot a single arrow. nearest club is kinda far away so I'll be recording myself shooting and comparing it to these videos to see where im messing up and what im doing right.
I was eyeing that $99 Mandarin Duck bow you reviewed for many months as my starter bow. My intent is to be more serious than a now and then hobbyist but less than a fill-every-tag-every season. Your reaction to that particular bow has encouraged me to hit the buy button in the next couple of months. It should give me a positive enough experience that I can fairly decide to upgrade or not later.
I spent a year shooting with the club rentals. Once the club owners told me I should get my own I purchased one right away but it took some time to get used to it.
Thanks for all your informative videos about archery. I come to your channel for information when I first started. My local archery shop set me and my wife up with a wooden take down bow each. I went over to a Martin Jaguar 45# within 3mo. However, when I decided to go FITA, I went through a ton of your videos from basic tuning all the way to parts selection.
Thank you for this. I've been pretty interested in archery as a hobby recently. I'm learning archery at my local club and I've done a few months of classes going through low poundages and trying to get a proper form but at the same time, I've started saving up 10 bucks per week for ever class I attend. this way, I can get a bow when I saved up enough which lets me know that by continuing the class regularly, I want to take it seriously.
All clubs seem to have dozens and dozens of sage/Polaris clones but the other day I found three bows that my club was getting rid of (cartel FRP risers with bolt on limbs) for $10 a pop and even though they were only #24lbs and covered in 400 years worth of dust I decided to buy one, with the intention of restoring it and loaning it to friends who want to try archery. And I've got to say (as the owner of a cartel sage clone), WOW... why on earth don't clubs drop the sage clones and just use the fiberglass reinforced plastic bows instead!? For a start they're cut past center and thus tune very easily with a wide variety of rests, they're cheap, and they're indestructible - but boy was I shocked at how easily I grouped well at 18m. Performance wise they're a step in between a full blown ILF setup and the lowly sage clones (yes, I am aware that its possible to tune a sage well - but not for many different shooters at once due to clearance issues). This needs to change. All hail the FRP riser!!
Im 4 weeks into starter sessions at our local club and itching for my own bow. They gave me a 24lb to start on but it feels too easy to pull back and hold. Tried instructors 35lb and had no issues with the draw either but did start to feel my shoulders had actually done something by the 24th shot. Shoukd i go for 30lb for my own to focus on techniques on cheap limbs then upgrade the limbs later?
Err on the lower side. Archery isn't a test of strength. Feeling easy to pull back and hold does not mean that you will be capable of learning with it. Most people can physically draw over 40lb without much effort, but having the control and discipline to shoot a 40lb bow is a different matter. I'd stick with under 30lb for your first set of limbs and go from there. Better to learn good technique on a light weight than start slightly to high and put up excuses over why you can't shoot consistently.
When Should You Buy Your Own Bow? When you can afford one , basically. It's not about skills or knowledge actually. Surely , the more u know about archery , the less chance u made wrong choice when buying one , but the only reason that stop u from buying one is that u don't want to waste money , and it all comes to "what ever" when u can afford one with no sweat.

I did my 6 week beginners course with club gear. I used their gear for another couple of weeks. Luckily the club buys and sells equipment from members so I managed to buy an appropriate set up 2nd hand that had been checked over by a coach.
Spot on. I went to the main archery club in my city and their bows were awful and shooting with their gear was most uninspiring. I think a first-timer needs to at least have a go at, and see seasoned archers shoot, a heavier draw weight slick bow that is a bit beyond their ability, just to feel both challenged and inspired. The main reason I see for going to a club is to connect with other people who are into archery, which is a good reason. And yeah, BYO gear.
Was great to watch this this morning; the very day we rocked up to our club & discovered that the bows we ordered were ready & waiting.. But just to be sentimental we decided to shoot the club bows one last time (After using them for the last 2 1/2 months); & my partner shot her PB using them. But now we can’t wait to get back to the range & see how our lovely new Olympic bows are to use with out matching correctly spined arrows! Now we can’t blame our equipment any more; which means we can now really focus on our form.
As another follower said, good to have you back. If you have time, can you touch on eye hand dominance shooting? I am left eye dominant, but feel comfortable shooting right-handed. Should I consider and lefty riser instead?
I'm the same way, I use a RH bow. I keep both eyes open and keep the "left" sight pin (with the double vision) as the one to follow, with the string in front of my right eye. I'm not sure if this helps but thats what I've been doing recently.
@@markshea8416 I just started using a RH bow because I'm right handed. Is there a place you can try both and see how it feels? I didn't know eye dominance was a thing in archery until semi recently. Check out his video, he makes a good point that if you are RH using a left handed bow your strength and control will be much less.

I live in a relatively small town, a few hours south of Sydney, with no archery shops, or even anywhere to shoot. I want to buy a bow, but the nearest archery shop is in Canberra, which is too far for me. Should I buy online and risk buying a bow that might not fit, or should I buy a club bow that will fit, but not perfectly?
If you're getting started with archery, you can buy a club level bow and figure it out from there. If you've done archery before and you have a better idea of what you want, then it's safe to buy online.
you omitted to mention that especially during this covid period, bow sharing can be risky in spreading the virus around. especially when people choose to shoot the same bow at a club. so buying your own gear is better than to wait around for someone to finish shooting and borrowing it.
