7 minutes in and already hearing stuff I'd never even processed before. I always thought i liked the versatile machines on principle, but then I realise that Mr Marmar has been riding as long as I've been alive, and I have lots and lots of riding growing up to do!
My first upgrade was for abs. My Ritz was without abs and had a small accident on that, which could have been avoided if I had abs. So when my wife started to drive and she took our son to school in that, I knew it was time to change. It was a memorable 75k kms and i was still enjoying it but could not compromise on safety.
I am riding my 24 years old bajaj calibration every day and still enjoying it as excited i was on the first day. It has the same cushion 3rd set of tyres and second silencer after 1,42,000 km.
Yamaha in my city still doesnt give test rides, they have tens for mt15s, r15s, fzs lined up for sale but not even a single bike for test ride. staff is not nice once u get ur bike handed over. When i decided to buy duke 250, i talked to ktm manager what my concerns are with my current bike (fz25) are, he said whatever concern u have if they are not fixed by the right ppl, u straight away talk to me, i'll get all ur issue fixed no matter what. KTM showroom had more test ride bikes then the show piece. loved the experience.
Yeah, why are two wheeler dealerships so unfriendly? Its almost as if they look down upon us. I have the opposite experience with cars, they put you on a pedestal the moment you walk in.
Well there’s one more reason to sell your beloved motorcycle that is if you’re moving to a different country for your career and so now you don’t want to keep your vehicle parked while you spend nights dreaming of being owning a motorcycle once again and your only solace is watching two gentlemen on RU-vid talking passionately and giving some sane advice on patience which for you is being tested each passing day as you’re counting each penny going towards the bike fund that….. **sigh** I may have gone off topic a little. /s - I wasn’t going to comment initially but currently the RU-vid videos are closest thing to experiencing motorcycles and each MotorInc notification brings me joy.

That being said i just wanna shout out to both shumi sir and Karthikeya sir, that i have immense respect for both of you and everyone that you mention and the work that you do. The past 2 months I've been binge watching your videos and talks all the way till the powerdrift podcast and I've learnt A LOT!!! And now with respect to the video. I have a Himalayan 411. (Bought when I was 18 with my own savings, so to me at that time it was THE DREAM BIKE) And with what i have heard about the 390 Duke 2024... I took a test drive of it. And... BOY OH BOY... I'm blown away. But still... I'm very much into the adv segment. Hence... Waiting for KTM ADV 390 2025. Until then, ride my Violet (Himalayan) to the MAX! Living my dreams! (Going to Ladakh this sept (again... Not a big deal maybe...😅😅 But a HUMONGOUS thing for me)). Again. THANK YOU so MUCH for every piece of advice and guidance you provide. I was very surprised when Kartikeya mentioned people saying gaadi puraani ho gayi hai after just 3 years! We started considering that we'd need to buy a new car after our Chevy Cruze was 13 years and 8 months old & almost 250k km, and it felt like yesterday when we bought the beauty! My Ecosport was scratched at the roadside parking recently, and I was furious about it, and my father told me, calm down, be proud that your first scratch on vehicle came 3 years into the ownership and for no fault of yours.... That was the time when I realised it has been 3 years! And I still feel it's new!
Great episode..one of the Best so far. Recently I "changed" not "upgraded" my pulsar 180 bs6 to Honda Unicorn 160 because of relaxed riding position with raised commuterish handle bar. It solved the neck pain completely. I made a loss by selling it as it was only 3 years old. Whereas I kept my classic 350 bs3 as I have a lot of nostalgia associated with it. Took it thrice to sell her off but something somewhere stopped me. I even had tears in my eyes while I took her. It was than decided that She will be there. She turns 8 years in 2 months.❤
No clear plan yet, AD. We're waiting for NX dates from Honda and the larger machines, we're not convinced that our current formats are the way for those - we're working on this.
Shumi is the voice of my heart ! I have a GT650 and a VW Polo(first model) that i absolutely love. The Polo was my first car ever (2011) and it is in mint condition. The GT650 is a recent purchase (22/06/22) that has a customised British Racing Green tank with Gold stripes and a Cognac leather seat. But i don’t use them. Cos they are really hard to maintain. The Polo due to non availability of parts and the GT cos it’s just too beautiful to get it dirty. For my use however i have the 2024 VStrom sx (Shumi’s recommendation) and the current gen i20 (2023) and now theres an Exter (2024) too and i’ve never been happier ❤

I’ve inherited my dad's 2007 Honda City which is pushing to 17 years old this year! No matter what car comes into my family, this Honda always brings a smile to my face like nothing else can, and on a reliability front, it has never left me stranded. Mine is not even the vtec but the little things like, the sound and feel of shifting gears, the rev-happy and quiet engine, and the fact it’s teaching me car maintenance like no new car would, makes me want to keep it forever if I could.
This is pinnacle of automotive podcasts. Thank you so much for this episode. As a suggestion can you please do a podcast with different terrains for driving / riding and how mindset should be changed as per the terrain.
Karthik you won't believe when I went to book my first car so called ' My First Ever Car " the tricks were so many and used as a weapon by many consultant but my decision and my opinion was concrete and remains as a constant and stood behind my convenience and at the end I managed to understand my senior consultant that what I want and what the car can give and that emerges as a electrolyte decision making and my perseverance remains unshattered an un tampered.

I think having 2 kinds of vehicles which are very different and purpose built make sense if you have the garage. My experience - Got an Xcent in 2016 - loved it, driving my family around in comfortable, spacious car which was frugal. 8 years years later (100k kms) I stopped enjoying it and bought a Jeep compass. Now I have both of them, Jeep for the fun (highway) and Xcent for the City rides. The Jeep is fantastic on highways and bad roads but fails to beat the convenience of the Hyundai in the City.
I don’t understand anything in cars and bike but since I started to listen to these two, I can’t wait to get hands on my first car. I started using my fz to it’s optimum and like it’s supposed to be used. I can’t get enough of these two talking. ❤️
Alot of people also downgrade their big bike to something smaller. Ex. Selling off their africa Twins and GSs' to get himalayans for purposes of practicality rather than a financial angle. Maybe an episode on that would give great insight and complement this episode really well :)
Hey Schumi & Karthi…Literally enjoying your discussions so much that every time I travel in my car I listen to your conversations and sometimes repeatedly..so informative that it just helps us understand the different aspects of automotive world.. My request is if you could do something like a science corner covering subjects like let’s say turbo charged vs NA engines wherein you could add why small downsized turbo charged engines are not as efficient as the manufactures claim to be..or something like engine layouts..might seem basic to some, but will be quite helpful for a lot others..😊
Just wow. Still a lot to learn from you guys. Have been riding fully geared here in the US despite the commute being shorter from home to work as compared to Mumbai. Reason being I have seen Shumi once on his Multistrada few years back and couldn't believe that he was fully geared even during Summer. This guy is real example of 'no compromise on standards and safety'. And then few minutes and km later after Shumi had disappeared, I saw a guy on a Busa with a full face helmet but sadly just a T shirt, jeans and sport shoes. Got to learn a lot that day.
Great episode! The importance of time vs money is bang on. I just think that it's emotional (the decision) and you being willing to live with the car or motorcycle even with its flaws because you love to drive it. But we change over time and so does our needs. So this comes in handy when we do feel like upgrading. Also, waiting for the next episode. That's a very interesting topic!

Both of you guys have said so manyyy relatable things that I'm completely blown away by the kind of understanding and insights you have. I agreed with almost all the key things about the "First Bike emotions vs Utilitarian angle" because currently I have crossed the same barrier of not getting attatched and selling off my first bike because it felt boring,had started to have stupid everyday issues in just 4 years and 40k Kilometres and buying that bike was not an emotional but a rather rational decision.And now that I already own a car and yet I have to commute to my office on a two wheeler, I think after watching this podcast I have almost cleared all my doubts about my next two wheeler purchase, and Shumi sir is absolutely right when he says that this time of my life will not come back and hence, I should do the purchase that helps me achieve a balance between my needs as well as my enthusiasm. I have 2017 Gixxer SF (non-abs) but I absolutely love it. I have modified it with autologue design kit and it looks absolutely beautiful to me. I ride within 80kmph so the power is adequate and the bike’s gonna stay with me forever. I’m saving to buy street triple because honestly, the only requirement my current bike doesn’t fulfil is a sweet exhaust note.
On point . Really good conversation. Your point about reliability was good. I put my hard earned money from my first job and bought an RE INT 650. But every time I took that for a long drive on holidays it used to break down due to various reasons. Now a fear has set in my mind that it could create a problem if i take it for a trip. It's not meeting the purpose and it's consuming my time by taking it to the service centre and arguing with them to fix it as early as it could. I have invested 4 lakhs money on it and made me stick with it because , if i sell it .I am not gonna get a good price. But this conversation provided me to take the next move. Time is important not the machine....
I don't even have a bike of my own I ride my elder brothers CBZ xtrem 2012 model ,I wish to buy someday a good Bike for myself , and I am preparing my self by watching your videos . I like your way of delivering your expertise on motorcycles along with teaching how to be all around good person.
YZF R15M and YZF R3, these 2 bikes will be my keepers for life when achieved. I don’t know when the R3 will join, maybe 5-10 years from now, but i would love to come back to this comment then and see how well this ages 😅. I feel I would complete atleast 98 percent of what motorcycling is to me (sport bikes). Thanks to your lovely insights in this video. Let’s see what the future holds !
Great podcast and it brings me a lot of clarity on how to move on at this given point of time in my life where I've had a R15 for almost 3 years now and put 62,000 kms on it. I inherited a Renault Scala from my dad about 5 years ago it's a 2013 diesel car, it has been driven a total of 2.3L might have reached 3L if not for the pandemic. It is a huge car compared to cars these days. I like the way sedans drive and the diesel part but it has its maintenance issue. I am pretty sure I know I do not want my first car to be a pure petrol car, and these are my issues with others - Diesel - The government is hell-bent on killing them(Fear they might reduce the age of them as they did in Delhi), EV - Range Anxiety (hoping Curvv might change that) & Hybrids - Very Few Options (City or Grand Vitara). Your thoughts on it? Love the way you both host. Carved a niche group of listeners with very clean and informative conversation.

I recently bought my first bike, at the age of 41, a TVS Star City because I run 70 kms a day and my 2006 Dio wasn't all that fuel efficient. But 5-6 months into riding my bike, on Bengaluru roads, makes me realise I should have picked something more sportier, a Pulsar N160 perhaps. Sometimes it's just a compromise I suppose, till I can afford a faster bike. 😄 Also, if you guys could do maybe a small video, on riding equipment and helmets for everyday use that'd be lovely. Thanks Karthik and Schumi for the great work you guys, and everyone at Motorinc, is doing. 👍🏼
moving on a machine is to me more of self satisfaction, learning is always there on every machine in one or the other way till we own it. because there is no best teacher than the road. I am driving my polo for last 10 years, and every time i sit on a new bigger car, i will feel like i should own that, even this happened in BMW, but next time when i sit on my polo, my mind tells that car is not driving/cornering/stable at high speed as my polo, so i am not going to change it.
42:44 We also faced a similar issue with test drive. We wanted to test drive the Mahindra XUV700 and this was about 2 years ago when it was the new player in the market. The showroom people saw my dad and realized since he is a senior citizen, they offered a test drive from home. We said okay, so gave them contact details. Sure enough about 40 minutes later we get a call from one of the guys from the showroom asking where our house is as he said he'll be there in 30 minutes. This 30 minutes went on to become 2 hours. At this point we completely lost interest and said no thank you. We don't want to buy the car from you nor we want to take a test drive from you.
Can you guys also consider sharing news about the automotive industry in the community section for example "the apache RTR 310- service camp conducted to suppress vibration". News like these will really help people.
TLDR; got 2019 rtr 160 4v without a doubt keeping it for couple of years without any worries For me an upgrade is far fetched now. I have been learning to ride a bike with a past experience in riding scooty. I have a 2019 rtr 160 4v, bought second hand but in very good condition. 3 months in I don't think I have even mastered 20% of this machine's capability. I don't see any point in upgrade atleast for a year or more. Even when I do, my younger brother would give a arm and leg to have this bike because it's in such a good condition and a good bike. And moreover I am torn between what I like, I see the appeal in cruisers like RE, but I want machines which are fun to ride like dukes. So looks of retro and performance of a sport is what I want it seems 😂. Triumph might be reasonable choice but with no dealerships around 400kms, so not feasible.
From buying Honda Unicorn Dazzler (dual tone), with my first salary, because it looked different and not like any regular bike/color at the time, to buying RE Himalayan (BS4), and then to Honda Activa (after getting married 😅); And from Maruti WagonR 2013 (second hand) to booking Mahindra XUV 3XO (AX5 Petrol Manual) recently; I feel like I have come a long way in the last 11 years, and able to relate to You Guys. 😊 btw I still have all my vehicles, haven't sold any!
I had an RC200 which i just loved riding every single day. I'd just find a reason to ride it however short or long. Took it all over india from ladakh to kerala. And done multiy 1000km a day trips on it (no my back didn't ache). I rode it for over 90k kms over 7 years. But in the last year it spent more time in service centre than in my hands and one day left me stranded in the middle of the highway. I called the RSA to pick my bike up, sent it to the closest friends place then sent it directly back home(in a different city) got it fixed and sold it off. I didnt ride it ever again after that. Got a duke 390 after that knowing that my body couldn't tour on a sports bike anymore and the duke just makes more sense. I've ridden this one too over 40kms in 3 years but now boredom has hit and how. Also now I'm married and most of my touring happens in a car so riding is limited to commute and weekends. Now I'm looking back to going to a sports bike. Life is full of realisations, some happen early, some happen late. Its important to act on it as soon as you have the realisation. Hari Singh? The JK Rally team driver? Oh I have driven with him during our Expedition from Bangkok to Guwahati. What a gentleman he is. On another note, the Upgrade is not necessarily a spec upgrade because at times a spec downgrade may also be an upgrade. I 'upgraded' from a SBK to a 411 Himalayan and had never been so happy. Its been 2 years and every minute I think of being on the motorcycle :) which was never the case with my SBK. Its that duke200 versus street triple logic.
My first car was a pre-owned Honda City Type 2 VTEC which I owned over a decade ago. Amazing memories but I got that car because I wanted something safer than my 2 wheeler (which I had a massive accident on). I sold that car and regretted that decision for years. Now By God's Grace, I have the financial resources to buy it back and restore it. Would I? No way! It doesn't have ABS and I'd never be in a mind space to push it and enjoy driving it. On the other hand, Shumi's review of the retro sports naked NS200 got me thinking (loved borrowing and driving those back when I was in college) that I might actually get one!😃
9:31 Totally agree and hard relate! How much a person is willing to adjust with the flaws is the most important thing cause everyone will enjoy the good bits. No bike is perfect and if the flaws start to bother too much to ruin someone’s riding experience then it’s time to upgrade your machine or maybe not buy in the first place.
Intersting! How to travel with family much needed!! Kid friendly destinations!! Safety on roads,packing,time management,stop overs,motion sickness hell lot to discuss which can be really boring for people without kids or the topic would give you substantial points on why to stay single :D
I know which car I'm going to go for and for me the process is like below. 1. Plan to buy a new car when bored with current one 2. If 1, then do you have money to buy your dream car? or afford a Loan to get your dream car? 3. If no for 2, then stop dreaming and earn money or if it is a yes, just go for it. P.S. The problem is always money for a vast majority of the people!! Happy Dreaming!!
@motorinc. I always loved the looks of SUv but when I drove the Scorpio or other SUVs I really couldn't enjoy it from behind the wheels. It's then when I bought a Verna and also own a Figo diesel which I love so much behind the wheels.. In this entire SUV world I still love small or sedan punchy cars as they are so quick and agile. As Shumi said will just rent an Innova as my family trips are hardly 2-3 times a year and drive fun cars that make my heart feel happy over the head. Atleast till I'm young at heart 😅
Pretty great conversation. The same confusion was with me between Thar and Seltos/Creta. My requirements were to do long highways with luggage. Thank God I didn't get the Thar and settled for Seltos.
43:07 Exactly what I did with the RE showroom that refused SM650 ride, I had the money and was going to pay the full amount but they judged me based on my appearance i.e. dark burnt skin as I was out on an adventure, unkempt hair, cheap clothes I have never bought clothes worth more than Rs. 2000 and still wear shirts that cost Rs. 100 from the local market. Instead I bought my childhood dream bike with well known issues, I will get a harley or some other real cruiser later skipping RE.
Karthik, you and I have had similar vehicles at various times. I have Dio that i still run and feel like upgrading from because I want more power and better riding comfort. My first car is a Nano. (That’s where the similarities end! No Busas in my garage!) It made a lot of sense as I lived in the city centre and commuting and parking was a breeze. But it’s limitation were obvious. Could not take it out on long drives, no creature comforts etc. After 6 years of just having a Nano, we bought a Kushaq because I had set my eyes on an Octavia RS when I was 19. The brand Škoda was a big pull. I still have the Nano which I find really hard to get rid of because of its practicality! Sometimes I am tempted to sell my Dio and the Nano and get a nice motorcycle! But I will never have anything small and awesome as the Nano again! Aaaarghh! 😅
I have the mindset of kartik The decision on finalising the scrambler 400x was just a reflection of it, I need the most practical single cylinder motorcycle and not an eyesore.
Damn!! This podcast..makes me ask a lot about my garage choices.. R15v2, Ntorq, zx10r n a Ciaz. The 1st change I am looking to make now is probably adding a adv, which can be a daily driver to office.. as the r15 doesn’t excites .. I luv riding it though but not daily.. I am really not a fan of the bulky looking Advs but they make more sense to travel which I don’t much .. I think of the Duke390 too..
I been driving for 30 years and love driving. In 2018 decided I was getting too old and got a comfortable AMT Duster. Soon got bored with it, sold it and went for the most uncomfortable car, the Thar ❤and OMG I’m loving it. Probably a mid life crisis thing and makes me ‘feel’ like I am a 20 year old 😂
I have had my duke 250 for 5 years now, I love it to bits. I want to buy a new bike, something of a different flavour, maybe something more off-road capable or maybe more of a sport bike, definitely more power. But I don’t want to let go of the duke, it’s so intuitive to me feels like an extents of me at this point. So I will have to save more to when I can get a new bike without letting go of my duke.

We have addressed this in a short @kunalrachcha8361. Basically, you don't need them but if you have to get one, stick with the first party ones and make sure that they are designed and bolted on properly.
Pheww. So many factors to consider for upgrading. Fine to consider all of them than to have remorse of buying something thats not in line with your requirements.

In Delhi-NCR, the upgrading decision is taken out of our hands. Great city cars in running condition, the kind they don't make today, like the good old Ritz or the Gen. 1 Swift, are supposed to be upgraded just because they break the whimsical 10/15 yr rule.
Im so emotionally connected to my gt650, that I'm reluctant to upgrade, thought it doesn't fit my ride posture and riding needs, im just in love with it looks,n i cant keep two bikes
Been riding my first bike meteor 350 from past 3yrs, i feel a need to get a sports bike to know more about bikes, but instead of upgrade i would rather have both bikes because i feel im emotionally attached with the bike and the meteor 350 is a good machine i could cruise on and a commuter for city. and have a sports bike for tracks and whenever i want to feel the discomfort of seat and adrenaline of going fast i can ride the sports bike (rs765) my dream sports bike 😄
I love how you break down the process of buying or going through a car’s age, there is a big lag on these knowledges. On a separate note, don’t think buying a lifestyle vehicle eg. LS430/W124 as a second or third car, which essentially will be a project car/weekend car is covered under the upgrade. Is there any possibility of a discussion or topic around this?
