What's amazing is Boston has had 3 #1 picks they traded away, and a historically bad team like Sacramento has not even had a number 1 pick that many times.
I can’t believe Celtics made so many good decisions with their tradings. Not to forget Allen-Garnett trade. They literally robbed Minesota and Seatle, then they traded 37 year old pierce and garnett to nets and robbed them. I guess the lesson is when Celtics call you for a trade don’t open, play dead or organize your fake funeral or something. I also can’t believe how Sixers keep failing in this trading bussiness.
@@TysonIke Boston sucks as a city. I'm from around Boston and I understand why black players don't want to come here unless they are getting a huge payday or have no choice.
Celtics robbed Seattle? Thanks to the trade, Sonics tanked and ended up with James Harden. Unfortunately, the team moved to OKC so, actually, it was Oklahoma that robbed Seattle LOL
@@MrPhilbautista Look man, If I wanna say somebody robbed someone, I need the “end results”. Celtics have 2 finals and a championship. Okc on the other hand, well I know between 2010-2016 they had a pretty good run against stacked team and they made it in to the finals, but lets say, I was in middle school when they started rebuilding, I have a job now and they are still rebuilding. So what I’m trying to say is in the short term Celtics robbed Seattle/Okc, in the long term bad management robbed them.
@@Mr96er I think Wiggs would’ve been healthy for the 2015 Finals and helped it go to 7 games. Love was pretty huge in 2016, so don’t know if they’d have won it then. Arguable either way, but no way to prove it either.
SHAQ and CWeb never wanted to play with each other. The trade decision was a direct result of Shaq's request for Penny. It was Shaq + Penny from day 1. Cmon Andy.
Well too bad they had beef down the road. Shaq and CWebb remained friends despite 2002, so Shaq woulda never left. They woulda prob won a title in 1999 when the league was wide open
@@twentyseven2948 Webber admitted once he woulda been ok with being Shaq’s number 2. He also was the one guy O’Neal really respected back when he was in college. I’d still say they coulda won that 99 title
@@LessGo7921 Nah. Shaq built rapport with Penny when the two of them made a movie, Blue Chips, with Nick Nolte, which is why Shaq pushed for the trade. And it actually turned out great. They meshed well and got to the Finals. The only reason they built beef is egos clashing. Chris had an alpha mentality too. Don't believe what they're saying now. If they were team mates back then, they wouldn't have even reached the Finals before one of them was traded.
2:30 The Russell-era Celtics was the SECOND dynasty in NBA history - George Mikan's Lakers was first after winning 5 out of 6 BAA/NBA Championships in a row (1949 through 1954, missing 1951). The Celtics were 'just" the most successful dynasty in NBA history with Russell.
I was actually the first pick of the 2004 draft but the NBA wanted to give the new team an advantage by giving them the best player so I was secretly traded to New Orleans for Dwight Howard
Shaq already said he didn't want to play with Webber, he asked the Magic to draft for penny, he would of left Orlando even earlier if they got Webber, he this in that 30 for 30 "This Magic Moment"
@@skateup2291 Showing support his cringe now? Man people always overuse words to the point that they should just throw out the definition of it. And do I need your worthless permission to post any comment to your liking?
@@chalkzone0 Because they knew people wouldnt draft him till 3rd pick at earliest, and they were able to trade the 1st pick for 3rd pick and future 1st round. It was still 1st round
The Cavs' strength there was not one transcendent superstar but a bevy of solid players all around. Next to Detroit, they had the deepest team in the league in 1989. Also, they made only one deep playoff run, which was in 1992. They were positioned to make multiple runs but they got derailed by injuries and Michael Jordan.
"The Kevin Love experiment just didn't work out in Minnesota." Kevin Love in Minnesota: 6 Seasons 19.6 PPG 12.2 RPG Including: 26ppg, 13rpg, 55 games in 2012 and... 26ppg, 12.5rpg, 77 games in 2014
@@deanbenford7363 was? Still is. Let's not let his weaknesses overcome his strengths. He is an elite passer, great defender, and can actually score but in a very limited way. I mean a guy who dropped 42 last year can score. I would still 100% draft him, i would just handle him differently and not treated him like the sun came out of his ass.
When I watch your videos I almost immediately go to 2k and make a “what if “ roster. Love the videos and thank you for giving us amazing content, I really appreciate it.
I mean that's one era out of a dozen that's been the most consistent organization in the league. Every other team has quite a handful of bad GMs, hell my Knicks have been ran by idiots for 50 years
Not sure if you've done it, but you should make a video about teams who unknowingly traded the 1st pick. Like how the Kyrie Irving pick belonged to the clippers initially
Celtics definitely won the 2017 trade. Saved more than $6 million in cap (before taxes) taking Tatum with the 3rd pick, gained a franchise-calibre player to build around moving forward, and avoided all the Fultz weirdness.
That 1980's Celtics trade was one of the most lopsided trades ever, even with Joe Barry Carroll being received by the Warriors. Like, you trade for an all star, and lose two players named in the 50 greatest players list. Not only that, this was quite nessesary for the Celtics, as they would lose Dave Cowens at center. Robert Parish was also just perfect for this as well, with his rainbow jumpshot, good defensive abilities and great rebounding, he made a very complementary player to Bird/McHale.
On a random side note Hot Rod Hundley went on to have a legendary broadcasting career and was the voice of the Jazz (both New Orleans and Utah) for like 35 years. His name is up in the rosters of the Jazz's home arena right alongside Stockton, Malone, Pistol Pete, Jerry Sloan, etc...
I wouldn't say the odds are that unlikely 10% chance isn't the best but a 10% chance to trade for a potential key franchise piece is pretty good. 10% cause nba is about 75 years old and 7 times trade happens
yes especially the player you have in mind isnt a top pick you could pick someone other team needs and get them to pick the player you want in exchange for some extra benefits.
Woah - you forget Dennis Johnson when mentioning players that Larry needed in order to win. Getting DJ was a game changer for them as he had already led the Sonics to a ring in the '78-'79 season before he went to Boston after the 83 season and they won a chip as soon as he got there and then again in '86 - people always forget that while focusing on McHale and Parish. I know they won one in '81 - but I doubt they win 2 more without DJ as the floor general.
I remembered that the issue that was raised before was the free throws for both Webber and Shaq. Webber sucked in free throw shooting in his early years
Crazy to think with all the hype on the #1 pick in the NBA and only 2 since 2000 have won a ring with the team that drafted them(LeBron and Kyrie) and LeBron comes with an asterisk as he left and came back. Also only 2 others have won a ring(Bogut and Davis), otherwise it’s a lot of what could’ve been, especially as a Bulls fan with D-Rose 😢
You forgot about Tim Duncan's chips with the Spurs, or are you not including him cos he was drafted in the 90s, even though he was winning them past 2000?
Wdym shaq won 4 rings in 7 years. Not only that but the lakers, Spurs, lebron and warriors have prevented players and teams from winning for the exception of the mavs, pistons and bucks
@@MrPhilbautista Duncan was drafted in the 90’s. As for players drafted #1 in the 90’s only Duncan won a ring for the team who drafted him and Shaq/Glenn Robinson are the only other #1’s to win a ring.
What about times teams traded the eventual #1 pick? Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Kyrie Irving… Lots of great players were #1 selections for teams who didn’t originally own said pick.
What about 1978? Indiana held the 1st pick, but local talent *Larry Bird* refused to declare, so they traded down with Portland (who selected Klay’s dad). Unfortunately, the Celtics found a loophole in draft rules and selected Larry anyway without him needing to declare.
Happy for Wiggins he got a rings now and was really the second best player on that team he may not be a first option but he proved for damn sure he can be a second option easily not to mention his defense is crazy
"Faster small ball style of play" Don Nelson's vision for the future of the NBA while coach of the Warriors. Now the warriors have utilized that vision with efficiency.
Regarding the Celtics always being well managed I have a name for you: Rick Pitino. Granted he didn't last that long but boy did he hurt the organization while it lasted.
I can’t believe I’m just finding out that Hot Rod Hundley was a basketball player. My grandfather jokingly called me “Hot Rod Hundley” most of my life and I never had a clue. Awesome
Like you mentioned at the start, there were a lot of times when the top pick was shopped around but no one bit, which may be why most of these trades were significant. If someone traded for the pick that turned out to be Anthony Bennett or Andrea Bargnani, not much would have been offered (which is why the pick didn't get traded) and it would have ended up being insignificant since neither player became a franchise cornerstone. What is particularly noteworthy is how little was given up for Brad Daugherty. He wasn't highly regarded at the time but did go on to have a couple of all star seasons in a borderline HOF career.
Actually Shaq was outraged by the Webber pick before the trade, because he both wanted Penny and didn't want Orlando to take another big man, so it would have caused problems.
Parrish and McHale for Carrol worked out great for the Celts, but now I wonder what they would have looked like with Bird and Carrol. It still looks like a dynasty.
The CWebb trade would have been good for the Warriors if he and Nelson got along. That year was very light on big men(something the Warriors were desperate for). They were stacked in the back court. Tim Hardaway, Spreewell, and Mullin. Penny wasn't needed there, CWebb was. Despite injuries to Hardaway and Mullin, the Warriors still had a 50-32 season, finishing 6th and made the play-offs. Something they hadn't done for years, and wouldn't do again for years afterwards.
The Warriors didn’t get fleeced in trading for Webber. He was rookie of the year. The issue was that he forced a trade before his second season over some coaching BS. The Warriors never got Mullin, Hardaway, Sprewell, and Webber on the court together for a single game.
As great as the Celtics have been in fleecing teams in trades, the Lakers aren't far behind. Look at their trades to acquire Kareem, Worthy, and Kobe. The most "fair" trade the Lakers made was getting Pau Gasol for Marc Gasol, but it was still a lopsided trade when you consider that Memphis really should've asked for more in return and the Lakers got away with not trading any rotation players or the equivalent of a lotto pick.
Still hoping that Andy does that “how good was Mike Miller actually” video , I know I keep asking him to do this but it wouldn’t be a bad thing necessarily
The league has been about wing players since the 80s back then you paired them with a dominant big man but Magic is the only dominant point that has multiple (over 2 just remembered IT) championships as the best player on the team. In general, if your point is your best player you're in trouble. Curry has 1 (as the best player on that team), Billups has 1, Thomas has 2.
Brad Stevens don't give Romeo Langford some playing time and just underachieve. Just hoping that he will get more playing time under coach Ime Udoka. Dude was good with Indiana in college before getting injured. That Fultz-Tatum trade could possibly ruin the 76ers with lack assets to trade for a superstar.
LOL the Sixers just had the best record in the East last year and, even with all the drama with Ben Simmons, are a better team than the Celtics are right now. I'm sure they're still crying about this disaster of a trade... NOT. Move on, people. Move on. FWIW Fultz doesn't even play for them anymore yet they're better, so who has better management?
