When hurricane Ida came through, my AT&T fiber was out an hour after I lost power. I had the router on a UPS. Neighbors on both sides had zero AT&T cell service, I still had Verizon service, and my son in the next block had voice only service on his Google phone. About 2 weeks before power was restored to my block.

I experience this nearly monthly with AT&T. We live at the end of the trunked line for the service. this trunked line provides all the towers and internet providers in our town and county with their data. I live on the edge of the desert about 75 miles east of a sizable city. We experience these outages so often that reliable internet, cell phones and electricity out here are things we laugh at and have to supply ourselves. My wife and I laugh often at the county dispatch center because this is an ever on going issue. My wife and I have radio. My kids keep a GMRS radio in their lockers at school just in case. Town is only about 3 sqr miles

Im in the UK. (Anglesey, North Wales to be exact) Regarding monitoring marine. I do this with simple baofeng HT's. In the UK the coastguard and RNLI use their comms on 156.000 (right at the bottom of the marine vhf band) its called "Channel Zero" and regular marine radios DO NOT have RX/TX availability. Its not even given with CHIRP software... so heads up if youre in the UK add this frequency to your Baofeng.... but whatever you do... dont press the ptt.. umm... unless you're sinking! (Btw its also used duplex +4.6

I just found your videos searching for information on some radios advertised on Fb and Instagram. I appreciate the video you did on those. If I were to get the radios you demo in this video, would I be able to reach my family, who would have the same radio, 12-30 miles away? What is the longest distance they will reach?

Not from a handheld. They can reach a really long way if you have clear line of sight, which you won't if you're standing on the ground and the other station is also on the ground

I was just reading a ham radio with a repeater can reach up to 300 mi or even across the world. Could you recommend one, I'm on a budget and I'd need to get them for my family too. I know we have to get a license to use them. Would I also need an antenna? I'm obviously new to all of this. So, is there a package deal that comes with everything that I would need and directions for someone like me? I really appreciate any advice and recommendations. :) @@HamRadio2

In the summer of 2023, Verizon on the east coast went down multiple times for several hours after a series of strong storms. Having alternative comm options is great, but our economy is built on digital communications. If there is an extended outage, good luck getting gas or food with digital payment. Newer starlink satellites have 5G cell capabilities, so look for that as a last ditch option offered if SHTF…

nice video. network down is not grid down . cell tower down is not the same either. best to have all radio bands . HAM repairers can be networked or not. GMRS repeaters may be internet connected . 2 way radios are great. can just use simplex or a outher repeater. even VHF MURS is nice to have as well. 5 CH in VHF and 2 watts . and free to use. like FRS and CB .for the most part grid down most cell phones and repeaters will work just fine. most have battery back up and more. also satellite's are effected buy solar weather as well. some went off line with that latest solar flair . some countries reported power grid down from solar flair. it took ham bands down for a wile. no skip. local comms only and noise on the bands. this can happen any time from the sun. it does fallow a cycle for the most part. 73's

Having worked in the cell phone industry there is a lot of scenarios that can take down a cell network. And you are very correct in saying that tripping over a stray cable can take down the entire network. Dispite what the industry would like you to think the system is "VERY" fragile! The redundancy of "off grid point to point radio" makes it almost indestructible.

when I worked for Ericsson many moons ago, we used to laugh at how fragile the BCS really are. we would find loose cables to power all the time, or bad network cables, bad connectors is a common thing, and clumsy techs are even more common.

@kd5inm
@kd5inm 6 месяцев назад
First net is on ATT network, they just have priority in an emergency. Different customers have different priority on networks. Cricket is owned by ATT and its is secondary to ATT customers. If the network has alot of traffic then Cricket customers can experience dropped calls. There is no different network for First Net. Other carriers have secondary discount companies as well, like Metro and others. Those are the same as Cricket.

One thing you didn't mention, the next World War will bring down all satellite communication systems so a satellite phone would be worthless along with anything requiring a Repeater for communication. A EMP explosion would also disable most electronic devices unless they were hardened and shielded. So, some tube Amateur equipment along with Military equipment would be working and even some CB equipment. The Police equipment would be down since I'd bet were not protected against a EMP attack plus, many of the Police communications equipment using repeaters won't be working. Point-To-Point equipment for communication if it was not destroyed by EMP would be the only communication system functioning. I might also add, the computerized electronics in cars even new fuel injection systems in trucks would be destroyed by a EMP attack. What would still be running would be the old point ignition and mechanical fuel injection (direct-injection) system on diesel trucks. The electrical grid would also be down so everything relying on solid state electronics would be have the electronics destroyed. Battery operated equipment like a Tesla car would be shutdown and the BMS protection circuit would cause the dreaded LiPo cascading affect from the batteries catching fire. None of our Consumer electronic devices are protected and hardened against a EMP attack. What would survive would be the old Tube radio equipment as long as the power supply was protected. I would bet that most of the Communications Network, Electrical Grid the we have in use today would be TOASTED!

We were charged £25 per month and a minimum of 25 p a minute. To give you an idea of the cost just replace the pound sign for a doller one! Who knows maybe in 40 years sat phones will cost as little as the current cell service. mine costs me only £10 per month but it is very light on data. 73 Jim M7BXT
