We did that and computer programming students always pass late 😭 we write everything in whole 4 pages and we get 5pts or 10pts for all of that 🥲

can confirm, just took one of the intro courses at CMU and it was about evenly mixed between paper and computer exams

Both parts of my intro Java class had paper exams... the second semester had to write Java AWT code on paper, that was painful.

The worst part, is when you have hand problems which make writing a painful/super-slow experience.

We also do our coding exam in paper. And semicolon is my biggest enemy (my lecturer is strict about it)

same, just finished writing one yesterday; it wasn't that bad to be honest, the worst question was to inverse every 4 nodes in a linked list (like [A]->[B]->[C]->[D] to [D]->[C]->[B]->[A]), the problem itself was not knowing how to do it but rather being able to tell how much more space you are going to need, had to rewrite the entire function on another paper and cross out the old one since it was all over the place; also it's very important to always double check for semi colons and the number of curlies; it was interesting tho, really made me appreciate the luxury of coding in an IDE such as clion that does half the job for you

Meanwhile, in a real applicable scenario: let me just copy this 20-line block of plotting code I have saved 3 years ago and change some variable names and values.

I literally asked for the computer at my lab exam & ended up scoring full. I wrote on the paper after debugging & executing on the computer with all the modifications the teacher asked of me. This was back in my 3rd sem.

Which is why I don't understand this coding challeng interview. It's not like your working environment constantly needs you to come out a low level implementation of a data structure or desigj pattern within 0.5-3 hours without any reference. What quality are you trying to evaluate?

I loved one test that I've had to a job, they just let me there alone for 2 hours to make consults on SQL, the guy said that I could search anything that I wanted on google because in this area we do this all the time and it would be stupid to not do.

@@leonardo25gabriel Yeah, exactly this. It's like asking you to do calculus without a calculator. Yes it can be done, but it's impractical and a waste of time. I'm not trying to win a no calculator challenge here, I'm trying to make deadline on a project. Sure, remember stuff without reference is cool, but I'd say in this age the skill to identify problem and know what to google or stackoverflow search to fix it is more important.

You know what kind of brilliant idea my uni had? Teach c++ the first semester and python the next, most of people there didn't know how to code at all, imagine the picachu faces of our Dean and teachers when 65% of the first years failed that semester

We had online lectures for the past two years, everything worked pretty good, we learned a lot, becuase most professors are really good at their jobs and made online lectures rather entertaining. Now we should go back to 100% in person lectures with zero possibility to maybe watch the lecture online via a live stream because you're sick or have to work. It's not even hard, just set up a god damn web cam pointed at the blackboard and it's done. German colleges are backwards as all hell...

Ehhh, with comedy things get exaggerated to make it more funny. If you want to get into programming and CS, go for it! The classes are designed to take people who have never wrote a single line of code into capable programmers. It can be stressful, frustrating, and very difficult at times, but I think you would find that every subject has their moments like that. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask! I recently graduated in computer science so I’d love to help out if I can alleviate any worries, because I know how intimidating it can be.
