About federal power. I think it was more about states wanting to keep their own powers. In the beginning, States saw themselves as separate nations. Each has its own constitution. States saw federal power diminishing their own powers. Any time the federal government got power, it was to restrict something the states were doing. States rights really means states power. If you look into it, states have always been more authoritarian than the federal government.
