I think the answer is in the history of Ukraine. They really hasnt had to fight for their existence (in modern times) as a united people and nation until now pretty much. A lot of people understand what is at stake but you have groups that dream of the Soviet union days (and think Russia will provide this) and others who are disillusioned by the corruption or simply just live day to day from simple farming minding their own business and never interacts much with Ukraine government. What he is asking for is basically a so called come-to-jesus moment for everyone there and realisation that there are actual stakes at play here, no one else will fight this for Ukraine. They have to decide if they want to become a subsidiary of Russia like Belarus or not, chop off parts of their country and give to Putin and most probably have no good outlook forever or not... (the natural richest parts are the ones Russia occupies)

Ukraine voted in 1991 to become independent from USSR with 92% majority, there is no controversy around this you can research it yourself. Eastern parts voted clearly yes with around 80% or higher in favour and Crimea with a low voter tunrout stood out at 54% in favour with its ethnic Russian majority population. Even more recent polls on seceding from Ukraine never got more than 25% in favour and any polls or elections after 2014 in occupied areas can ofcourse not be considered valid. However voting for something and having to fight for it can be two different things and its implications towards need for unity and self identification, and this is what Ukraine has to face right now and that is what I think the last guy is talking about. I hope this comment wont be deleted (as my previous) as it contains only commonly known facts and everything else are my own opinions.

Ukrainians speak russian because of the effect of russian colonisation. Because of genocide by man-made starvation, the introduction of russian settlers, and forced russification, that "shared history" you refer to. "Exterminating each other" is terrible both siding for the waging of a war of conquest and attempted genocide on one side, and simple self defence on the other.

It's already irrelevant what people in Ukraine think but what is the point to have any interviews where it is forbidden by law to have different opinions. Different opinion is an criminal offence in Ukraine so only thing you're able to hear is repeated presidents statements. I'm sure that majority never wanted to start this insanity and would love to stop it anytime. Can't imagine how desperate Ukrainians will become with time, even if all stops today. There will be an unbelievable disappointment after this much delusion

Majority don't think they are Ukrainians! 70-80% are native Russian language speakers. They were part of Russian Orthodox church...last year state changed dates of their religious holidays. When we say Russians raped 2 million German girls...most of those named Russians in those documentaries are...guess who.. World started to pretend that we don't know things... There are literally millions of examples they are Russians. We never knew there is things like Dagestan, Ukraine or Checenia in Russia.
