I'm from the Midwest, my girlfriend is from California. She found it seriously weird how she had never met her neighbors before, and the first time I went to her place, I made casual conversation with them for about an hour. They're nice people.
I am from the north east and I only knew a couple people on my street, I think my husband knows all of them, what car they drive, and their normal routine. To him that is just being friendly.
Even Midwesterners who don't fish have this thought. Except we think about someone we know who loves fishing. Like "Man my brother-in-law would love fishing on this river."
@@themoldysausage True. Usually I just go looking for islands to check out. In Minnesota pretty sure anything out in the middle of the lake can't be privately owned, just the ones near the shore.
@@bigfish3846 It's true. New movements seem to hit New York and San Francisco at about the same time. The difference is that New York is so big that you can ignore them if you want to. But San Francisco is so small that you will probably know at least one person in them.
No lie, I moved from the west coast to the Midwest and when I'd first moved I was walking in my neighborhood with earbuds in and a neighbor waved to me and said something- my immediate thought was that she was flagging me down because there was an emergency, cuz why else would she be talking to a stranger walking past her house? She was just saying hi.
As a Midwesterner, I promise we all dont sound like Canadians Some of us sound like Southerners. But overall I have never been more flattered by a portrayal of Midwesterners.
As a michigander I got mistaken for Canadian when I was in Australia so folks who use Canadians accents to portray the Midwest get a pass from me cause clearly it’s close enough
As a Midwesterner living in south Florida the past couple years, I told the cashier give me what’s ever the easiest and she said that was the nicest gesture anyone has ever done lol
@@therealjoelawrence Not even close. Outside of Miami, south Florida is upstate NY and north Florida may as well be Alabama. Anyone who would equate south Florida and Manhattan is someone who likely has never visited either.

I grew up on the west coast and I don't think I'll ever understand why anyone would greet strangers. If someone does that to me I'm instantly skeptical like the guy in the video lol. Like my first thought is, "what do you want? You want to scam me? Mug me? Assult me?"
The Midwesterners are like Dutch (Palatines), and Canada is like French, however both sides are Franks its not surprising they are similar and get along with each other. There both Germanics from the Carolingian dynasty of and under Frankish nobility.
I came to the States from S. Korea about 30 years ago and have lived in many different places like Philly, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, and St. Louis, MO. For shy people, LA is the best place: they don't need to talk to strangers. For direct and clear answer demanding people, NYC and Philly are the great places: they can't live in any other places on this planet. People who are friendly but a bit shy would enjoy living in Chicago: the agriculture city is the space x for them to settle down. For people like me who enjoy talking to neighbor and are community oriented people, St. Louis, MO. is the perfect spot for their living.
As someone born and raised in rural Greece but been living in Los Angeles CA for the last decade, I can identify completely with the Midwest. I actually have some family in South Dakota I make sure to visit and it’s as if I’m taken back to Greece. The way of life is simple and the relationships more genuine. I have resisted LA influence in many ways and people here still find it weird I talk to neighbours or sometimes cooking for them. People I know in LA also don’t understand why I would go out of my way to fix things or install stuff for free for people I’m friends with. I might just join my folks in South Dakota in the next few years 😂

This is about right. I grew up in Minnesota and got stationed in California with the Air Force way back in the 90s. I found that people out there are not interested in talking to a stranger. I found it refreshing driving home and stopping off at SA (do they still have Super Americas?) in Iowa and sparking a friendly conversation with the guy working behind the counter. He appeared so friendly after being in California for several months.
Fishing for food on your own, sure I get that. But I'm not sure I like the idea of stabbing a fish in the mouth with rusty hook to prove I can. Not trying to put anyone down, but....yeah when you think about fishing, that's it, right?
Having lived in Wisconsin from birth to 6th grade, and California from 6th grade through 12th, I can say this is accurate af and Californians really ARE the universe's buzzkill.
Blackwolf MGTOW dont think everyone from California is like that, but I won’t deny there is some truth to what you’re saying and a reason why Californians are looked at a certain way. I was half raised in the Midwest and also raised with manners. The assholes are usually the clout chasers and the fake people trying to be famous for nothing. That being said good and bad people are everywhere!

As a person from the midwest, I never realized how nice we seemed to other people until my first trip to Florida. All the states we passed through people either didn't understand why we were acting nice, or what we were saying lol.
Indeed. As an Arabian who studied in both CT and OH that there is a huge gap between the two. I prefer OH for the friendly people, quietness and sports. Also, it's funny that despite my English has slight Arabic accent. Yet, many of Ohioans think I am from CT! I might picked up certain behaviors of theirs or their pronunciation of words.
My uncle is a long time resident of Florida and I can't say I've ever seen anyone drive more aggressively. I mean, I've survived enough trips in his car to know he isn't being life threatening, but he'd be small town gossip, easy, as the rudest driver in town.
@@marshalljarnagin9370 Central Florida has the worst driving I've ever seen. I mean actually terrifying, don't walk on the sidewalk unless you've got great reflexes driving. I can't tell if it's because there's so many tourists that all have different driving styles trying to fight for the same road or if it's just the coke.
Florida here! That whole aggressive driving thing is exactly why I never understood NASCAR! Why would I waste time watching something I live every 🤬 day??

Most definitely, when you look at the US and realize it’s basically the size of like 6 European countries (may be an exaggeration lol) its suddenly easier to see how there are many cultural divides
“Cicadas-the sound of summer.” True, but as a Missourian, this line makes me flashback to 1999 and 2012, when the cicadas woke up from being dormant for 13 or 17 years (there are two kinds). They were EVERYWHERE, falling out of trees, getting trapped in cars. Fun times.
I took a Japanese class during a summer camp between my sophomore and junior years of HS, during cicada season, and our professor gave us a rule that every time we saw a cicada, we had to yell "SEMI" (pronounced say-me), which is the Japanese word for "cicada". It was alot of fun to do that with people who weren't in the loop around.
When I first moved from the Left Coast to the Midwest, I thought everyone was hitting on me. Nope. I'm extraordinarily nice for a Left Coaster, but I have nothing, absolutely nothing on a Midwesterner. On the other hand, I'm quite direct and it's taking a lot for me to get used to Midwest Passive Aggressive. That and "ohhhhh they'll figure it out in their own time...." instead of actually proactively giving folks info about what they're supposed to be doing. That aside, I love my new home. Right down to the insane weather, wide open skies, and terrible roads (that get that way because of the insane weather). Could do without the skeeters, biting midges, and chiggers, though.
Los Angeles county alone has 15 million people in it. It’s just a totally different rhythm in California. We work hard and we have very little space to ourselves so we need it. It’s nothing personal. It’s just a different dynamic.
As a Minnesotan (as nice as Midwesterners get), I can confirm that the people from the West Coast tend to be rude because of culture differences. They’re more cautious with people, and Midwesterners tend to be polite. And yes, we do speak like that ;)
@@cat_city2009 Minnesotan here - can confirm. I hate it. A lot of people here are "fake nice" to people not in their social group, but legitimately friendly to people in their social group. I have a personal theory that it's been established through generations of poor boundaries and passive-aggressiveness. If you don't like someone, just don't spend time around them. There's definitely a difference between being polite, and being passive to get through an interaction.

I'm from down south, but I live in the midwest now. I've learned that aside from different accents, we actually got a lot in common. Not so much with most of the west coast folk lol.

I don't know, Missouri is a real mixed bag. You get a lot of everything, pretty much. I've lived here my entire life and met a huge variety of different people.
I mean the grunge makes sense, since it came from Washington and all. I don't the rock or metal ones do though aside from the previously mentioned grunge, or rap is infused into it. At least Linkin Park and RHCP are from California. Though as a Floridian, you're welcome for Limp Bizkit.

I come from Iowa, moved out further west, and people do indeed get scared when I say ‘hi’ to them on the street. And when I say ‘sorry’ or ‘let me squeeze right past you’.
