BTW#2, your windlass wiring is coroding from seawater in your anchor locker. Get your wiring up under the deck for protection from chafe, damage and corrosion...cheap and easy....even zip ties will get 'er done
@martynobs6970
@martynobs6970 2 месяца назад
BTW, you need to rig up a windlass switch at the helm so you can motor up on your anchor chain for slack and quickly flake your rode to ease the load on your windlass. [ use a DPDT switch with 2- 12V relays .... cheap wiring and reliable] Cheers bro !

I was going to say the same thing. Get a remote switch. The windlass was never designed to pull a 9000-20000 pound boat along.

@@TheCornucopiaProject-bd5jk I've seen a windlass literally ripped off the deck from incorrect use. The load should be on the cleats NOT the windlass

Great shark shot! About the windlass, I was taught to take up a bit of the chain and then wait for more to go slack as the boat naturally rides up over the remaining chain. In other words, pause for a minute every time the chain is pulled too tight and is taxing the windlass. Takes a few more minutes to get the anchor up but usually eliminates the need to use the motor for us. Pull the anchor out from straight above it. Not sure if it would work in the conditions you were in, but it saves a lot of stress on the windlass. I never pull chain in when it’s to the side of the roller; I always wait till it’s slack right in front of the roller. Good luck and keep the videos coming. Love to see your hard work pay off as you walk those gorgeous beaches.

Thanks for the kind words! After thousands on Nautical miles and anchoring in all sorts of conditions I think it's the design of my hull? I often use the skack chain wait method.. in this instance the chain was tight even with some throttle on the engine in forward she still was tight. Maybe I need a bigger windlass? Things to think of during my next refit.. Thanks for commenting

Got to love a discovery like that where it’s simple to fix and be ready and safe at anchor once again.

Well that looked like fun. Without the windlass you’ll always be in good physical shape.

That is not how to use the windlass in heavy wind. I mean this in the nicest possible way. If you are alone and have no one to work the helm, then you have to go back to the helm, motor up a boat length, then run up and pull up all the slack with the windlass. Then when the chain is under load again, repeat until the anchor is free. Then it should come up fine. The helm switch is a good idea, but I like to see the chain coming up. I do this with my 47 foot catamaran. And, if you have to do it manually, then you especially have to motor up on it, or you will just kill yourself.
@narrowescape81
@narrowescape81 2 месяца назад
I was glad to see you stop trying to do it manually in those conditions. I don't have a windlass and lost the tip of my finger in the bahamas doing what you were doing. All it takes is a quick pinch between the chain and cleat and you'll wish you slept in 😂

Everyone keeps commenting this. In high winds you put your vessel in gear and it wanders.. my vessel does anyway. I'm out here anchoring everyday in all sorts of conditions. Do you think I just missed something? I'm assuming you mean wait until it's calm..

@@sailingEV888 in your circumstance you need a windlass switch in the cockpit. Could be wireless. Using an anchor bouy is helpful to know where to steer towards.

@@sailingEV888 You motor towards the anchor, then go back to neutral before running up to the bow to take in as much chain as you can. Repeat.

When pulling up your chain, the chain needs to be vertically, not on a angle, they are not made to pull your boat , you need to drive up to the anchor and then pull straight up

I would think you need very strong cleat or Sampson post, Used to raise anchor under sail always, Main sail definitely not jib. pull in as boat moves forward when vertical cleat off and momentum will release from sea bed.! had about boat length of chain and 150 ft nylon.Always 2 anchors overnight.
@martynobs6970

Mike, you're anchored too far offshore. Don't be afraid to get to under a foot of water under your keel at low tide...even a few inches will do. You're getting beat up by the winds and chop. Likely your draft is 5ftish. You should be able to find a spot within 200ft of shore and be snug as a bug in a rug. BTW, Bond Cay which is the SE corner of the Berrys has ZERO surge on its W shore....super comfort and only 30 NM from Nassau when the winds are right for supplies, more rum and a fresh Conch salad at Potter's Cay

Although I have a windlass on my 48, I run rode to a winch in the cockpit. If you have touch chain to use the winch, you can attach rode to it closer to the anchor. Also, gotta have a good charge on the battery to handle the load?

Does your windlass have the ability to use manually with a winch handle? My windlass is just a simple manual device. I keep a long winch handle for situations like yours. Stay safe out there.
@sailingEV888

I have the winch handle option however it would take like 30 minutes to wind in 180 ft of chain. Maybe I should test this?

A wimp eh? So what happens when your dragging anchor in a blow with out a windlass? What am I going to pull up 200 ft of chain by hand? Just the tension alone in 25 knot gusts makes it impossible with an 11 ton vessel. Sure you can day sail a 36 with rope Rhode and no windlass. You would be a fool not a wimp to go 1000 nm with out a windlass there armchair captain😂😂
