When To BET HUGE With CONTINUATION BETS! [Poker Strategy]

The days of continuation betting small every time and winning are over! Top poker professionals are using various bet sizes to maximally exploit their opponents. Learn how to do the same in this video!
In this poker video you will learn:
o When and how to put maximum pressure on your opponent’s right away.
o What type of hands to use when you’re continuation betting (c-betting) using a huge bet size.
I talk through the strategy that you must be considering when deciding on what bet sizes you should use.
We want to start using slightly larger bet sizes as the flop is more dynamic. This means that the board is likely to change as the turn and the river come.
When you are very deep stacked, if you start to use larger c-bets you will end up getting to stack your opponents with your premium hands!
Remember that calling stations are not often looking at the size of the bet and will call regardless. Against these types of players you should always size up your bets with your value hands! (And stop bluffing them too much!)

11:25 I hear you but would you please go into a little further detail for this specific scenario? When we face a 3-bet we just let go? And when we do get called but -as in most cases that K doesn't show we let go hoping to get a free river? Maybe occasional a small barrel when a heart comes? Greatly appreciated!

Very useful video. Thanks! A video on "give-up hands would also be useful. For instance What to do with 78s or 22 or even A2s or K7s etc on KAJ rainbow. (should you bet anyhow, because of your nut advantage?) I think most low stakes players have problem with just checking and giving up - betting too much and too frequently - leading to too many (almost) zero equity bluffs. Therefore it would be useful not to only know when to bet (range- and nut advantage, backdoor draws with overcrds etc, but also to know when you should check and give up and award the pot to your opponent.

Thanks Jonathan. at 60nl zoom on acr, I fold top two if opponent breathes on the pot on the turn and fold kings pre to the cold 4. But live, I station the river routinely with ace high. I recommend to the viewers that if you are going to call someone down with king high, or if you think the opponent has a shit pair, you need to rebluff him by jamming the river when he triples. No one ever does this so he is not going to call off with ace high or 33 even getting 8 to 1. it is worth it to do this because you risk maybe a third of the pot to make a small raise but he may show up with bluffs that have equity 30-50% of the time. If the opponent is not bluffing, then, well, you are screwed, but you shouldn't be calling turn barrels in live games in the first place unless you are pretty sure villain is bluffing.
@ivanthepro309
@ivanthepro309 2 года назад
sorry, wouldnt you risk more if you jam to catch a bluff? It might be a case he has the nuts. you could just check call to induce a bluff, or just call to catch. Or even just raise instead of jamming.
@hymnofashes
@hymnofashes 2 года назад
@@ivanthepro309 It depends on how much money is behind, if you want to min raise or if a jam makes sense. Obviously the drawback of jamming is he could have the nuts and you could lose your stack. The benefit of it is, occasionally he will actually be betting something for value that is not the nuts, and he will actually muck it, thinking river raises are always the actual nuts (which they usually are.) If you're worried he might have the nuts, and you have ace high on the turn, you can probably just pitch your hand on the turn and wait until you have an actual bluff catcher. This is specifically for situations where you are pretty sure based on live reads that he is bluffing.

That's tricky....A queen could also be part of your range...but it could also be a part of his (ex. K-Q, Q-J, Q-10, Q-9 can take a very similar line). I would say either bet it large or check.

It seems to me the J10 hand was just lucky to be up against aces up. If opponent has a lone ace (more likely) you will make more money by betting smaller on the turn and river. It's easy to get full value in a cooler situation, but more often than not, as played, you will be up against a worse hand than aces up. I'm not questioning Jonathan's knowledge, he knows a million times more about poker than I will ever know, but in a video about getting max value it's a bit convenient to use an example where your opponent is at the top of their range. Hands like A9, A8...even AJ or A10 are probably folding to the turn overbet.

Appreciate the info. It makes more sense to use bigger bets when you explain it this way. My question is does this work most of the time and does your table image affect this. This looks like it will work on line, but does it work in live cash games? And do you use the same strategy for tournaments, live and on line.

I’m mixing between cbetting 30% and 80% on the flop and it works well for me. I definitely agree that 1) Cbetting small doesn’t work well as a bluff, unless we’re setting up a multi street bluff. 2) We lose EV in many spots if we always cbet small.

how is range determined? is it mainly due to who bets or raises pre-flop? So i bet under the gun and bb calls, that determines that I supposedly have a good hand pre-flop? What if bb re-raises my preflop bet? would that mean that by re-raising bb now has good hand range?

What do you think about blockers. The hand where you had K10 on a K 10 7 makes our opponent less likely to have something worth calling. Don't we want him to stay in the pot with rubbish? Also noticed you didn't mention sets. Can we ever put our opponent on pocket 10's / 7's as i believe they would have played simular.

Turn. I think BB has 8s 5s and 76 mostly or 43s to call off the flop. Shouldn’t have too many Qs but will have Q8s, Q5s, and Q2s. Could also have some QJs-Q9s he decided to flat preflop. And some KQo. So actually definitely some queens too. Check behind and plan to call the river. Check back. Plan to call several rivers, but maybe not a J, 9, 8, 6, 5, 4

Now I have a poker hand I would like to ask you about..I was in a big tournament online I basically had 90 bb some one before me raised I reraise with pocket jackets and another player reraises me all in covering me. There were 62 players left out of 1,700 I usually fold in these spots but in this spot I called he had AK Off the flop was all hearts turn was a blank and the river was a heart. I was trying to find out if I was supposed to call there. What is the correct play? I’m thinking I should of folded. Also when calling an all in bet for all your chips what hands do I call with besides AA’s also what percentage of my stack should I be investing when calling an all in bet. Thank you!

I would bet half pot (30). I don't think the queen changes much, unless he specifically has Q8, so I think I am still well ahead of his range. But my nut advantage is now smaller (I have more sets, but he has more two pairs) so I don't want to bet as big. The board remains dynamic, so I don't like a small bet.

For the KT hand (and specifically asking when you hold top two or top set), since you double block strong hands that can call several big barrels, is there a case for betting small on flop, and then slowing down to induce with check call turn, and then check raising river line on brick runouts? You still get these value hands like KQ to bet for you on turn/river from competent players and the river check raise will also be a shove for similar value, or is that line only more profitable if you think villain will overbluff most of their bricked draws?

Hallo Jonathan In the TT hand, i think a thin value bet would work, because i don‘t think that people are calling a 5 on the turn, so imo they are kind of capt on a 8. I was experementing with 20% bets on the river for value in this situations, and people call this bets veeeery wide, I get called even with A-highs. What do you think about it? What also happens sometimes (but rare), that people raise over a 20% cbet as a bluff an you get even more value, inducing a bluff from the villain. Excellent topic - I have been thinking a lot about adjusting my typically cont bet sizing. Another question and I am curious on how you would adjust. I regularly play a 100-300 no limit live games with blinds of 1-3 If you raise 5x the big blind you typically get multiple callers. Even a raise to 20 is getting multiple callers. Kind of ridiculous considering the stack sizes. What kind of adjustment can I make? Start limping? Or raise 35-40 preflop and then occasionally run into a stack size of 100 that ships? Gets complicated - if you have any thoughts that would be great.
@PokerCoaching
