I'm in my 4th year of beekeeping and I'm curious why you run one versus two brood boxes? Here in Illinois/Missouri area and in most books I've read, I typically see two brood boxes followed by supers when they fill up the brood boxes. Great video - curious to hear the answer!

Hi, I'm in Virginia and run two deep brood boxes, but I get a better spring build-up with one deep plus one med brood box. I tried single deep boxes but it became a swarm frenzy in May. The Double brood box allows 1/3 honey storage for winter reducing the need to feed sugar bricks or candy boards in early spring.. If you are a honey producer, you can capitalize on a reduced brood cavity or the Damerie method to maintain a very strong hive.

Where do you stand on inner covers or top covers that have a single bee sized vent ( or upper entrance ) ? Pros/cons?
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees Год назад
I personally like screen innercovers with upper entrance notch

Thanks, I think the two things that freak new beekeepers out the most is trying to identify swarm cells and when to add a super.
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees 2 года назад
Well this hopefully helps explain our approach to one of those, we will do a swarm cell video one day. Bee sure to subscribe and hit alerts

I love the idea of using the too screen - great idea! How do y’all feed during the winter??
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees 2 года назад
We don’t feed during winter but we do feed after our harvest and in the fall. We use both bucket top feeders and inner frame feeders. Naturally removing screen inner covers when using too bucket feeders.

Hi my hive has one empty frame and a couple of frames are still full of honey after winter. About a third of the hive is packed with bee's and brood. When do I add a super or will they draw the empty frame and use the frames with packed honey?
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees 2 года назад
Sorry for late response. It really depends on time of year and bee volume.
@saramccoy3936
@saramccoy3936 2 года назад
So when you say 80% of a 10 frame box should have bees on the frames, does that mean there can just be bees literally crawling on the frames but they haven't done anything visible with them yet?
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees 2 года назад
Sort of. The 80/50 rule I use is 80% of the frames being worked with >50% coverage on the frame. A few factors such as # Brood, resource, undrawn/drawn comb, and time of year. All will definitely shift the decision a bit. But 80/50 is a quick way to determine if those other factors matter.

Can you Another super on top of that one and can you add a brood box 1st before the supers
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees 2 года назад
Yes you can do both, but remember to manage the hive bodies to the volume of bees. Too much space too soon creates opportunities for pests to move in, too little space and they may swarm. Its a balance. The good news is there is not hard fast rule, you need to watch your bees and add boxes when it makes sense.

🛫📖🛬 Hello Jason, I'm really curious brother, How many jars of comb honey did you harvest this year. I was hoping that you would do another video and I also wanted to ask if you have used the Ross Rounds yet? Looking forward to seeing your next video keep them coming please. 📖🛐✈️🐆🐝🐝🐝

Thanks for the comment Chuck. I harvested about a doz or so of those mason jar comb honey 🍯 we primarily focus on regular extraction honey but do like to make a few jars of the Mason jar comb honey.

@@BohemiaBees 🛫📖🛬 Right! But you taught me something in that first video that you put up about mason jars honey; It sure does sale good at the flea markets and at the produce stores along the highways. I mentioned the ROSS ROUNDS; HAVE YOU TRIED THAT YET ❓ I have not but quite a few people online have tried them. I imagine buying the whole kit would be on the pricey side ❓ I think I'll always go with your idea and the mason jars. It tastes so good coming out of that glass jar and pretty too. GOD Bless 📖🛐✈️🐆🐝🐝🐝

the other day the skinny bee man put a queen in a cage and then some worker bees with her...she was unmated and was wondering why wouldn't you put drones in there also...you might get lucky? she might?...could you get a mated queen that way?...I don't have a clue....
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees 2 года назад
Honeybee queens don’t mate with drones from their own colony. They must mate outside the hive at something called Drone Congregation Areas (DCA) and usually at a distance with many drones (8-13) to ensure their is genetic diversity.
