When to Replace Brush Cutter Blades

There are four situations where it's necessary to replace your brush cutter blades, and I discuss all four in this video. I've seen people try to sharpen blades until there's almost nothing left to try to put off buying new blades, and there are times when it's just not worth it.
The first scenario requiring blade replacement occurs when the tips have been worn past a certain point, and that will vary from cutter to cutter. Check your owner's manual. On the cutter discussed in the video, once you've worn off over 1/2" from the original cutting edge, the manufacturer recommends replacement. Of course, they're trying to sell new blades, so I take that with a grain of salt. Most blades turn up on the opposite side from the cutting edge...you MUST replace the blades if your ever into that point. Once you try to sharpen the part that tips up you'll get a very uneven cut that you won't like.
The second scenario that requires blade replacement is if you bend a blade. This happens when you encounter some obstacle at full PTO speed and something has to give. It's easy to bend a blade, and you'll know it when you engage the PTO after the impact. The whole machine will shake like a banshee and you'll feel it in the tractor seat. Occasionally, shaking of that sort could mean the blade just got tucked up under the stump jumper, check that first, but if the blade had been bent it's time to replace both blades.
The next situation where blade replacement is necessary parallels the last one. That's when the blades have been sharpened unevenly and one weighs more than the other. If you start seeing the machine wobble, that could be the problem. Always try to sharpen each blade the same, and that's easier said than done when you're operating an L-head grinder underneath a machine (ALWAYS WITH JACKSTANDS HOLDING IT UP!!!). Once one blade weighs a significant amount more than the other, you're going to get excessive vibration when you operate the cutter and it's time to replace both of them.
The final scenario when you need to replace the blades is if you're hiring someone to sharpen the blades for you. Most mechanics charge at least $60 an hour for their work (most much more than that), and it doesn't take long when paying someone to use a grinder, a slow process, to sharpen the blades. At the time of posting the video, new blades on a 5-6' machine cost somewhere around $125-$130 to replace, including new blade bolts, and you can quickly burn that up in labor if you're paying a guy to sharpen really old and worn blades.
In my next video we'll look at sharpening blades. That's something that a lot of people probably do too often, and wrong, and it could accelerate the wear on their blades. We'll tell you when to sharpen and how to do it so the blades last a long time.

I ran my OEM blades for 15 years, mowing 10+ acres 2 - 3 times a year. Those early years I clobbered a lot of things not meant for brush mowing! I never sharpened the blades. A couple years ago I realized my fields are getting into pretty good shape so I took a look at the blades - YIKES! I replaced them. What an improvement - now the mower actually cuts instead of just blungoning. From here on out I will remove the blades every year to keep them sharp and balanced.

Thanks for the information on the blades Mike... I a new owner of a Land Pride RCR 1860 and the manual is great but learning from the Pros is even better... Just setting that unit up to cut rough trails is an experience... Appreciate sharing your knowledge...Chief{NYS/ADK}

Great video, I don't run a tractor but even on my lawn mower I keep an extra set of blades on hand, its nice to throw the fresh set of blades on the mower and keep going, and sharpen the dull ones when I have spare time rather than having to stop and rush through sharpening or run to the store and buy another set in the middle of mowing. Most of the time though I just swap blades in the fall, put the new ones on, and sharpen the dull set sometime during the winter and put them on the shelf so its all ready to go come spring. I understand a brush hog is far different but still having a spare set of blades and bolts is a great idea.

I've seen a blade get stuck under the stump jumper because of grass getting stuck on the swivel. When starting the bush hog it's unbalanced. You have informative video's, keep up the great work!

You may cover this in your next video, but I've read that the cutting edge of the rotary cutter blade should be about 1/16" thick at the cutting edge so as to "whack" the material rather than slicing it like a finish mower should. All good points made in reasons to change out the blades.

I have a John Deere 513 cutter and it came in a package deal and I have only sharpened the blades twice and they still work fine on the cutter. The bush hog is a 6 foot unit and well built too. I have seen some which was about the same size, but you could tell that they was cheaper bush hogs. I am looking for sockets, and other tools which I can use to remove the bolts, and have to get a tool from the local hardware store to aid in removing the blades, and stump jumper on the bush hog, and other equipment which require being lifted up off the ground in spots.

I seldom sharpen my blades maybe once every three or four years and I replace when the corners are worn beyond the original bevel, if that makes sense. Most of the wear will occur on the front corner of the blade. When that wear goes beyond the factory bevel it's time for a new set. Thanks

Golly, I sharpened my blades after mowing the 16 acre pasture. They were way rounded over. I guess I don't need to do that. That's kind of a relief. It's a pain to do all the crawling and groveling to get them on and off and on the mower. The sharpening is the easy part. I guess I'll wait a few years before I do that again! I just mowed most of the 6 acre hay field. They're cutting just fine...

Hey mike I just sharpened my blades on a 6 ft Bush Hog brand cutter. 1st time in 5 years. Took a grinder and barely touched up the ends. Took about 30 minutes. As long as you don’t hit anything too rough too much, at least for my purposes, I think that is often enough. I mow about 15-20 acres twice a year depending on rainfall.

I have an old Massey Ferguson 1051 brush cutter, and it's hit an awful lot of rocks. Some of those rocks were up to 20 inches across, and they were broken into big chunks when hit. Still, I never ever bent a blade, and I'm still using the originals. Yes, they do need sharpening badly, and yes, I'm rock-free now.

Hey Mike! I’m replacing my 5 foot cutter blades now. I’m replacing the blade bolts as well, mainly because they were so hard to get off and they’re about 6 years old. Any other reason to replace them?

My bushhog did great the first day but the next day, well its been driving me crazy since then!. It bangs like its constantly hitting something hard even in semi high grass. Its like it's the blades are hitting the bushhog itself.. I dont know but I can free spin the blades and its smooth or with it running its smooth. Just start moving and mowing and it sounds like hell!..

What is the best way to keep blades freely swinging? Mine get stuck to the stump jumper over time. I'm getting ready to install new blades and have never seen information on this. Lube the bottom of the pan where the blades make contact, or not?
@brandoncaldwell95
@brandoncaldwell95 3 года назад
Just leave them be. Typically its the junk, grass, sticks, dirt etc, that get between. I never had an issue and the will still move if hitting something.

HEY Mike, I have had a problem with excessive vibration on my 6" rotary cutter. It did it the first time I hooked it up new . The vibration is worst when I first turn on pto then it plains out and is normal . I greased the areas where the blades attach to the stump jumper. I had a 5' cutter and never had any problem. the vibration is only when I first turn on pto or if I turn the pto on a grade. any thoughts? thanks
@TractorMike
@TractorMike 3 года назад
Randy, it's probably normal. Some cutters are worse than others. The extra weight of the 6' blades is one culprit, there's a pretty abrupt change from being still to being engaged and it takes just a few seconds for them to get spinning and they can shake you up on the tractor seat. What RPM are you engaging at? I usually engage about 1500-1600 RPM and then gradually move the throttle up. You might experiment with different RPM's. As long as it's smooth when it's running, you're fine. Now, if it were an older cutter, I'd be advising to be trying to wiggle the blade pan up and down to see if the shaft is worn, but that's unlikely on a newer cutter. I think it's just normal.
@russellparrish5745
@russellparrish5745 Год назад
I've had blades break off the blade bolts. Talk about throwing your cutter out of balance, that really will! I'm sure that is caused by metal fatigue from hitting stumps and hard objects over time. Here again you need to replace not only the blade that broke off but the other blade as well.

I remember the original blades on our brush hog were so worn the end of them came to a very sharp tip. If we kept using them they would start to become shorter and shorter. The previous owners sure got their money's out of the original ones. Lol.

Yeah, I've seen that many times when I worked in a dealership. A lot of customers trade machines when the blades are gone and they don't want to hassle with trying to replace them.

The main reason they are not sharp is so they don't cut the brush clean leaving it pointed allowing the small tree brush etc. to puncture a very expensive tractor tire.
