Hi Jeff, questions regarding tomato seedlings: it feels like Christmas morning everyday … I just can’t wait to get to the gifts, but instead of gifts it’s seedlings. Growth is happening and very soon it’s transplanting time. Two questions: is there a method of strengthening the stems? (2 wks. old) and is there a change in soil composition? I thank you in advance for your answers, Blessings!

I am curious to learn why you say tomato plants "thrive" from up-potting. Thank you!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Год назад
All nightshades (including tomatoes) send out adventitious roots from their stems. By burying the stems, you can increase the root network exponentially, causing the plants to grow remarkably faster and stronger. Its a common practice.

Here we are near the middle of March in South Carolina and I still can't plant anything in the garden like before when I could plant in late February. Night time temperatures will not go above 40° F until mid April this year. So much for "global warming/climate change". Not looking good to plant outdoors this year until May 1st. Tuesday 3/14 the low will be 32° F. and several days below 40° F.

@cuznclive2236
@cuznclive2236 Год назад
You describe climate change perfectly! Your climate changed; did it not? This is what people fail to realize about the fact that it is happening. The cause is debatable, however. Since this is a gardening channel, I have no interest in a debate over why. All we can do as gardeners is adapt.

I just came in from covering my tomatoes and peppers with tulle. I figure every barrier I put up, is one mare chance to get a harvest. The squirrels have already been scoping out the area. I think they were taking notes on which beds to hit first. But, they were not expecting me to have a barricade, this year. I'm hoping by the time they figure it out, I will have my load, already on the shelves. 😆😁🤣

Question I have tomatoes growing back in my garden and I was wondering if I should put them in pots I have a few really tall wide large pots. They are a unique plant that I got at a special master gardener sale that keep coming back every year but they look crowded. I think they’re small little six plants. I think they need to be spaced out how tall should they be remove them?

Tomatoes are from the Nightshade family? Would this also apply to others in the same family? I tried something new, grew "chits" from spuds, planted them out, and they do seem to be content. I am just about to start tomato seeds, any specific info I need? I put the pots on a slightly warmer surface, basically that's it. Warmer summer coming after La Niña and La Niño switching places. Maybe I will get a decent harvest. 🤞🤞

100% it would apply. Peppers, eggplants, even potatoes....although potatoes are biggies, so there' no point in seedling trays for them.

A couple of my plants have bumps on the leaves. Not stems, leaves. Are they fine? Or is that a bad sign? I did have the light a little close since they’re probably ready to transplant now... idk hoping it’s something silly like that that’s fixable. Also don’t think it’s on any true leaves. But will check again.. but A couple have a bunch on the other leaves

I start my tomatoes, peppers and aubergines in seed trays, then prick them out when they only have the seed leaves and transfer to module trays. I sink they right down in the compost, so that only the seed leaves and 1/8 inch of stem shows. They will stand this treatment when other species don’t. There is less root disturbance and they make stronger stockier plants assuming good light is provided. They then stay in the module for a month before I pot on into 3” pots. Another month later they go in there final place in the allotment garden.

I can't remember where on RU-vid, but he was using red party cups, one stacked inside the other. The inside cup had holes plus soil, and the outside was basically blank and sometimes filled with water; it sorta tricked the plant into continuing root growth without it being to root bound. I tried it and it worked very well. It's my go to method now since the frost can creep in even in April at times.
