Hello Herr Antrim. Thank you for responding to my comment. Honestly, both my husband (who watched as well) and I are amazed that we got feedback. Good for you! You are very good. We are both trainers for English so we are always looking for interesting videos to help us learn German - which is amazingly challenging. Thanks for correcting the links. Now we can try your exercises. One thought for the future - it would be really great if contrasts and alternatives were presented that really were in fact Alltag language. Not funny catchy phrases that no one really uses or distracts you from the learning. For example, when we use 'zu', first of all why? Is it simply an alternative way to talk? Then, could we see the way we have learned sitting next to the new way? Then truly basic sentences that will build confidence in the learner. Then the Übung that starts easy and becomes more challenging. This build up helps build confidence and is very often lacking in the videos. Nevertheless, your videos are worth watching. Thanks! Amy and Gabriel Barreiro

Hi Levi! This is one of my weaknesses about german learning... Therefore when must we use this word, ZU in the german language! I'll say 2 examples. Your job will very simple! As u r a teacher, u must decide which is da good sentence! So: Ich möchte eine Freundin haben. The otber is: Mit Behinderungen ist schwer zu leben. Are these sentences right? I tell one mo example! (Ich) eße zu Mittag, Abend.

Your first one is correct. Your second sentence needs "es" behind "ist".

@@MrLAntrim Why must we use ES in ZU-sentences please? I saw a sentence in a german learning book. It was In Deutschland ist verboten, sein Kind zu schlagen.... i think the word SEIN would be MAN.... Y is this word, MAN masculine? It is he and she in english!

If you don't have "es" in the sentence, you don't have a subject. You need that for it to be a full sentence. I don't really understand your new question, as there is no mention of "man" in the sentence. "Sein" means "his". Since it is not explicitly stated in the sentence we assume the masculine possessive as a sort of generic possessive pronoun.

@@MrLAntrim Sorry but as we hungsrians say, "question gives a birth to an other question." When i learnt german in hungarian online, online german lesson based on hungarian language, it means that there was a hungarian woman, so when i learned german in hungarian, she showed us 3 sentences: Ich kan das nicht glaUben, AS I REMEMBER, N THE OTHER SENTENCES WERE : ES IST NICHT ZU GLAUBEN, AND DAS KAN MAN NICHT ZU GLAUBEN. THE QUESTION: CAN WE REPLACE THE WORD ES WITH DAS OR MAN?

But we also go without zu when there is no modal verb in the sentence. Ich gehe ins Kino Film schauen. And ich gehe in die Bibliothek lesen. What about that? I have heard that a lot.

That's because gehen is often used as a modal.

Do not copy and paste the link. It is shortened by RU-vid. This is why it ends with ... I cannot change this. If you click the link, it works just fine. I think RU-vid just wanted to clean up the links in the description to keep them from being too long.

From what I know you can't use 2 verbs in one sentence unless they are modal verbs or gehen/lassen so you'd say something like ich liebe Schokolade, weil sie mir hilft, mich zu entspannen. Ps:im still a learner I'm not sure it's right

It is there now. I apparently deleted the old page that had only the zu + infinitive worksheets on it and didn't add them to the free worksheet page. That error has now been fixed.

Does anyone know, at 9:06, why does it qualify? Is not "sich", a reflexive pronoun, subject of the clause? And therefore the clause does have explicit subject?

Reflexive pronouns can be used in either the accusative or dative case. It cannot count as the subject, as the subject requires the nominative case.

So the sentence "Kommst du mit zu essen"? Just a lilttle confuse with.. "Ich gehe jetzt zu essen" that you said is not right.

These are very slightly different. The first one includes "zu", because the first three words are actually their own sentence of sorts and the "zu essen" is an infinitive attached to this without a subject. Kommst du mit? - Are you coming along? Ich gehe jetzt essen. doesn't need the "zu", because "gehen" is being used as a modal verb. The subject is attached to both gehen and essen.

You are correct. The link in the description was outdated. It takes you to an error page. The old link only took you to one free file. Yes, but this isn't the kind of usage explained in this video. That is simply a normal preposition usage.

@@MrLAntrim I think by your 1st example that saying something like: ich versusche Deutsch zu lernen. Would also be wrong. I suspect it should be written without zu: ich versusche Deutsch lernen.
