Regardless of politics, Wittman was and should be forever acknowledged as one of the greatest tank commanders in the history of tanks. He also showed extremely outstanding leadership skills and an unselfish concern for the welfare of his crew. An amazing figure to study and read about in WWII.

In the early 2000's, I secured a copy of Wittman's wedding photo. After much research I found out where his wife was living under her new married name. She autographed the photo for me and sent it back to me a nice letter (in German). She was a very nice woman who appreciated my correspondence and interest in her late 1st husband.

Looking at these videos and seeing how young these soldiers were is eye-opening. No matter the ideology they fought for they were basically just kids who were called up to do a dangerous job in defense of their families and neighbors. Spewing hateful rhetoric at some teenager who died 80 years ago doing his duty is truly without class.
@matty6848
@matty6848 2 года назад
Agreed Don. We think as them as men in their 30s and 40s but most were mere kids, 19/20/21 years old. Even the U boat captains were considered senior if they reached the grand age of 30. Imagine a U boat captain probably in his mid to late 20s commanding a U boat full of younger men, most who were barely into their 20s. As that famous line in the German U boat Movie “Das Boot” when the captain speaking to the war correspondence “innocence snatched straight from mothers gown, it’s like a kids crusade” then he tells him to wait and take photos on the return mission as they would grown beards by then and not look so young. And that “Churchill would be embarrassed to see the shaven faces of his enemy” just young naive kids who prior to war had never left Germany in their lives and worked on the farm owned by mother and father.

I'd really like to see a full length movie on the life of Michael Whitman. A movie without the political BS and just about the soldiers life. But, unfortunately they can't make a movie in Hollywood without showing the atrocities of Nazism. Even when the soldier had nothing to do with the atrocities, they'd still have to throw in Mass executions or something along those lines. Michael Whitman was a hero!

You mean not telling that he was a member of the SS? Wehrmacht soldiers also commuted atrocities from day one! In France they murdered French colonial troops from Senegal. Murdering POW's is considered a war crime! Wehrmacht was not "clean" when it comes to war crimes and atrocities.

Most war crimes committed by the SS weren't carried out by frontline combat unit's. Also the allies committed quite a number of atrocities but those get glossed over because well we won. I'm a Czech and the Germans are the reason why my family has to flee to the US after the British betrayed us and made us give up the Sudententland so I got no love for the Germans. Great day to you all and God bless you all, thanks again for your time and your work into your videos of documentation for and of the hard fighters of the German army and services to which Patton said the world would never see a great army of their status and quality ever again in the history of armed conflict. Wittman didn’t die as a result of a defensive action. He died as a result of a foolish charge on the Allies with several other Tigers. The British had 17-pounder anti-tank guns and Fireflies with those guns that could easily knock out Tigers.

Even at close range It took several shots to take out Whitman's tiger and that was from the side from the video that I watched

Obviously, you do not know what you are writing about. A Firefly, which was a Sherman modified with a larger higher velocity gun and modified turret, could possibly kill a German Tiger tank, but it would not have been "easy" as you say. When i was at any Allied cemeteries there was always buses coming and going with tourists, lots of people walking around talking smiling and a sense of pride honor and victory. At The German cemeteries its very very different almost spine chilling. Walking around there's no one and i mean no one, the only sounds are the wind in the trees. When leaving i felt like something was holding me back from going it was weird as. When getting into the car i sat and the second i closed the door i had a feeling to look left and my eyes were directly at a photo on a German grave. I got out walked over it was a young boy soldier killed in 45. I took a picture of his grave in memory of that experience. When i say sad im saying there's no one there probably ever.

Swap grazed his cheek......for grazed his lower lip between his chin when Soviet jumped on his Tank ! ,the scar on his lip seen in that photo was a totally different incident where Michel smashed his face into the interior of his cupola that knocked his teeth out of his head, and knocked out of his seat onto the turret floor, his crew thought he was dead, but that was to come later !.... and then that's correct buddy ! No he received the Ritterkreuz/ Knight's Cross on the 14 th January 1944 and then the Echenlaub / Oakleaves on the 30th January 1944. The Schwerter/ Sword's was awarded on the 22nd Juni 1944. His last Tiger l was a SDK fz 267 a company kommand vehicle with a mid productions turret with a late model hull..mount 007..his Tiger l was hit in the rear on the 8th August 1944.... .his body was found until the March of 1984.

Judging by reports of the engagement in which he was killed, they committed suicide together, the crews of that tank unit. They were in an open field, in a tight line one behind another, and kept there when each got hit and knocked out. That is bizarre behavior for the ace of ambushes to be caught in the open. They knew all was lost, and died for Germany rather than surrender. The words are all there in" panzerlied".
