12:01 "I just had this immense admiration for her" I remember when I was 12yo and I was in a sports summer camp. There were mostly 14-15yo girls and boys so I was the youngest girl there. But I was very tall and very good at sports so I quickly became friends with a 15yo girl who was THE best at sports. She was the coolesr girl I had ever met. She had Greenday and Avril Lavigne CD's in her portable CD player, she had black hair in a spiky pixie cut and wore sportish/chic clothes. She always picked me first in her team and trusted me when we were playing baseball, basketball or soccer, because I was fearless and she inspired me to be better at every game. We sat together in the bus when we had trips and she let me listen to her CD's as much as I wanted. I had never had a girl best friend because girls bored me to death, always sitting in a corner playing Barbies. So having a summer camp best friend was an exilarating experience for me. I woke up everyday eager to find out what we would do that day. I admired her SO much. When the camp ended we never saw each other again I don't even remember her name... Now that I look back, it was clear that I was kind of in love with her. It even sounds so gay "we met at a sports summer camp" haha It's funny how we sometimes fail to realize something so obvious about ourselves. I literally realized I'm bi a couple of months ago and I'm 27!

My wife and I had been friends for years, we lived together and went our separate ways. We lived together for a second time and within months it was totally different. It makes us laugh because it should have been obvious that we were interested in each other, but I guess a person can explain away all those little brushes of a hand or butterflies when they aren’t ready to face the feelings. 7 years later we have an amazing marriage and a truly beautiful life!

I'm with my best friend. We were friends for 10 years before we got together. I was smitten the whole time but she was with someone else. I didnt dare cross that line as I respected them. But when they broke up it was a whole different story. She came to me a said she had a crush on me. The rest is history. That is the cutest puppy you have. Sweet little family I must say. I think when all of them are added up is when the line begins to get blurry for me and that’s when I start to question my more intimate feelings for my female friends. I think your partner should be your best friend, regardless of gender. It's weird to feel like you'd hold someone else up higher than your partner in life. You can definitely have other friends that hit spots your partner doesn't, like enjoying things with someone else that your partner isn't into - but it's weird being married to someone and they aren't t he one you want to spend the most time with. Makes me shake my head when people are not looking forward to spending time with the one they married.

I have pondered this same idea of where is the line. I believe that you need many people in your life as friends and that line of intensity is something that everyone has to work through. I have had a couple "friends" where we never crossed the physical intimacy so I thought we were just friends but later I realized she was basically my partner in my mind (I was in denial of my feelings). It goes to show that relationships are so intricate and the physical boundary is not the only boundary to skew the line of relationship vs. friendship. Such an interesting topic. Yep. All very familiar. We would speak to each other in Dutch in front of non-dutch speakers or in references to geeky things we knew nobody else would understand. And following each other around. I made it to a protest just after she had had to leave and we were both totally bummed, like the protest suddenly paled into insignificance. And we started checking on if each other were going to things as part of deciding if we would go. Idk how we didn't realise this before. And we were happy to get texts from each other even at 3am when they woke us up. Lol. Maybe we were never really just friends. Mind blown. Saying goodnight too. And how much I thought about how she is so great. One time she happened to come into the vegetarian cafe while I was in there. I waved and she asked if she could join me. That night I texted her and said "for the record you're always welcome to sit with me"! Can't imagine why people thought we were already together.

Yeah this is very relatable I think I'm demi bi romantic. Kinda in love with my bff though I'm stuck on what to do about it because I'm scared.

Regarding the line between friendship and relationship that you mention in the beginning, here's my two cents. As a straight man, it is very, _very_ , confusing for me, that women in general have friendships that are very intimate. And you know, it is fine, as long as it is only friendships between women. But apparently for women that also extends to friendships with men, and they insist that those are platonic friendships. At that point I become incredulous (the "uhh, no no no, this is not platonic at all, you are mistaken" kind of incredulous). I become incredulous, about how aware everyone is of what's actually happening, about the sexual orientation/sexuality of the guy, about if the girl knows what "platonic" actually means or not. None of that makes sense to me, because if I get close and intimate enough with a female friend of mine to the point we are comfortable cuddling for example, I know that it will eventually lead to me having intrusive thoughts, to me eventually having an erection, and if she notices and takes action, it will lead to a sexual relationship. I realize that women can dissociate the two most of the time ; for men it's generally not so clear, and I'm not talking about some chauvinistic mindset here, but about biological drives that we, men, have. So I know that for me personally, there is some voluntary and necessary emotional and physical distance between me and my female friends, because if there isn't it will lead to a non-platonic, unhealthy friendship of some sort in the worst case scenario, or a sexual or emotional relationship in the best case scenario. Because if there isn't that distance, I know I would be ok having a physical (at least) relationship with any of them, she'd just have to open the door to it. I cannot remember of an exception to this in my entourage. The girl says "he's my best friend", I think to myself "yeah, sure", and let it go, next thing I know the guy is trying to have something more, or, had feelings for her the entire time, and I am not surprised. Happened with myself, happened with friends, with exes' friends… Sometimes it's the other way around, but it somehow always end up like that, short of a few exceptions, main exception being : the guy is gay. I saw that recently with people that are older than me, around 40-50yo maybe. She didn't claim that they were best friends, but they are friends like best friends are, you know. So I thought to myself "well that's… uncommon, but okay, we'll see", and sure enough a couple of months later, he lost his boyfriend during lockdown from some heavy disease (not COVID, but I don't know what), which put the pieces together for me : he's gay (not a surprise), and that's how that friendship with her works without turning sexual. Suddenly it made sense. There is also a difference, I've noticed, between how men view friendships and how women view friendships. Men, when we spend time with friends, the main reason, by far, is to "do things". The secondary reason is to talk about stuff to important people. More or less. What I've noticed is that women spend time with friends mainly to be with those important people, talk to them, provide/receive support and comfort, etc, and secondly only, to do stuff with them. In other words, for men : activities-people, in that order of importance ; and for women : people-activities, in that order of importance. What that means is that when you gals think "he's my friend, I'm gonna be close and intimate emotionally with him", we see that, and see "uh… she's interested in me ? This could be more ?". Because for us, being friends means we basically just do stuff together, but we rarely talk just for the sake of talking. If you constantly try to cross that line, you're trying to get with us is how we see it because this is not what our friends do. We can, just talk about stuff, but most of the time it's about the activities we did together, we are doing together, or we will do together. The focus point is the activities we do, whereas your focus point, is the people you do activities with. So when we try to be friends with you our way AND you try to be friends with us your way, at the same time, there is a confusion, because either way, this is not how this works for both people. Where you guys would give each other emotional support, we would instead tease each other and give each other the tough love. This is how you bond, and this is how we bond. And this is why when my ex told me that she regularly cuddles her "male friends", I was not okay with it, and then later learned that her "best friend" confessed his feelings for her, which again was not a surprise. I had to teach her how to be friends with guys without things turning that way. She whined at the time, ignored, and ended up leaving me for some other guy who was her next "best friend", which only proved my point. The line is confusing, and the only way to make it less confusing is emotional and physical distance.
