Some people have to understand that it kind of was a color barrier thing. Keep in mind this was the early 80's. White people (stylists) weren't familiar with African American hair or skin back then. The skin they didn't know the foundation or makeup to match black skin tone back then either. Now they are much better with both for sure.

Yeah this would have been one of the first times he had white folks work on his hair. It had been his own specially picked barbers who were always blacks. In the Motown days all of the hair stylists were black. "Thriller" was the first time he decided to go all in on multicultural appeal, which meant he had to work on looks that would have broad appeal and songs that would do the same.

Race doesn’t have a damn thing to do with what’s happening here. To begin with, Micheal no longer had his natural afro at this stage in his life. Probably the last time we saw his natural hair unprocessed by chemicals was around the time of his Off The Wall album. By the time of the Thriller album, Michael had a Jericurl perm, and that’s what we see in this video. It basically wrecked the natural kinky coils of black hair and made it much more limp than usual. One would then apply curl activator to give it the appearance of shiny spirals. With such a perm, a black person’s hair would behave more like a that of a white person with curly hair. A white hairstylist was probably the best choice with that perm, if we’re being totally honest. The Jericurl was a hideous choice by black people, male and female, in the 80s and it was good riddance when we finally ditched it. It left oily patches on headrests, pillows, couches, cushions and anywhere you might lean or lay your curly head. It was no wonder that Michael’s head got burnt so badly when his hair caught on fire. Those hair products made all of us potential torches. Even after Michael moved on from the Jericurl, he never went back to natural kinky black hair. For the rest of his life, he would use a chemical relaxer, so he certainly didn’t need a black hairstylist or one who knew how to handle black hair textures. True - Michael doesn’t seem too happy at this styling session, but that wasn’t unusual. We’ve seen him with this vibe on many occasions when a team is working either his hair, his makeup, his clothes, or his posing for a photo shoot. Celebrities and even heads of state often compromise between the look their handlers are going for and what they might do for themselves if they could be ordinary people. Although Michael had many such uncomfortable sessions (even including some studio drills with Quincy Jones), he never threw fits at anybody, and treated the people who worked on him, with him and for him with gratitude and respect. If he saw the title to this video, he would say “What? What happens when … huh? I don’t get it. What does that have to do with anything?”
