Being raised on a farm I don’t know chicken squat about chickens. I’m learning now. I’m thinking about getting some hens so something would bow to me. We do have a wild peacock running around in the is area. I need to tell the story on that one day- and the crazy neighbor who is associated with it.

Great tip with the ceramic eggs! We put those in our nesting boxes before they started laying too, and we only ever had one egg laid in the coop outside the nesting box. It’s definitely true to take breed guidelines with a grain to salt too - we were so surprised when the first of our mixed flock to lay was one of our buff orpingtons, because we had always heard that they lay later than most breeds. She was the first to squat for us though, so we should have known she’d be the first to lay!
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 года назад
The Buffs are very good Moms, so they bow down easily. It's amazing how different girls from the same breed, and the exact same age, will lay different. They will lay when they're ready to lay! Our girls have started and we're getting more & more each day! A fun time!! Thanks for watching! Cheers!

I prefer fall hatched chicks. Because, they do all of their growing over winter when they wouldn't be laying anyway, then when spring comes they ramp up and lay. Where as spring hatched chicks spend the majority of the summer growing then start laying in the late summer or fall, then stop for the winter, so their first year of production is short.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 года назад
We have lights on in the outside coop from 6am - 10pm all year. Our hens will lay year 'round. I just don't want the little hens without all their feathers when it's -20f. Thanks for watching Gwen! Cheers!

@BroqueCowgirlHomestead 2 года назад
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Yeah I keep a light on in the winter too. Most stay laying but some do stop. Chickens don't molt until their second year, so the Littles raised in the fall don't lose their feathers.
