Maybe you dont understand how snow works.If you fire up some tank engines it might melt some of that.There are no new tanks, just some underground stuff brought up.Shipping tanks round the country just to collect them somewhere else is nothing anybody would do.either you refurbish or you test them on site.Sometimes russia stores tank underground. surprise

Highly likely they’re consolidating at certain bases because those tanks are either being harvested for parts, selected for refreshment/restoration or even being used as a school for mechanics, restorers. As much as I’d like to say they’re empty, it’s more likely most of the garages are full.
@paulwilliams667
@paulwilliams667 2 месяца назад
You’re almost certainly correct they’re full. The interesting question is /full of what?/ Are they functioning tanks or long cannibalized shells and what generation of Soviet armor?
@d3nza482
@d3nza482 2 месяца назад
@@paulwilliams667 If garages were used for storage of functional tanks, or tanks in better condition, easier to refurbish - we wouldn't have been seeing decreasing numbers of tanks left sitting outside, exposed to the elements. Garaged tanks would have been sent to the front - not T-55s.
@shannonkohl68
@shannonkohl68 2 месяца назад
Speculation here, but I would think it more likely that the answer is that they are running out of qualified mechanics to fix them, so they consolidate at a few bases in order to not have a small number of mechanics at all the bases. The idea of it being a school seems unlikely, you would only need a few to learn on, and that number would not grow but would be related to the class size. Obviously as those tanks are fixed, you'd want to bring in more broken ones, but that would still the same number unless the class size is growing. As to harvesting the parts, it also seems unlikely. Cheaper to take the part off the tank where it is, and ship it to where ever the recipient tank is located than ship the whole tank. But who knows, these are Russians we are talking about. For all we know the commander of the base is amassing tanks so when Putin goes down he'll have the biggest tank force in the Russian Civil War.

One other reason for this depot increasing in numbers of tanks in storage is its proximity to the Uralvagonzavod tank factory at Nizhny Tagil, only 130km away. It makes sense to gather all the tanks that you will be fixing up in one place, then ship them at one time to the factory. Especially if you don't have sufficient storage space at the factory itself. It also enables you to be close to your supply of spare parts.

You can imply activity in the garages by the snow melt on the roofs. You will have to allow for some tree cover which will disrupt the amount of snow on the roofs. Some of the garages have zero snow melt and it could be implied that there has been zero activity there either because there is no need or more likely there is nothing there to work with. A few of the sheds do have some snow melt implies activity inside such as engines running or other sources of heat.
@peka2478

Their are a few reasons imo. 1, yekaterinberg is a major transportation hub and could be a stop along the route from russias far eastern reserves to ukraine. 2. It is very close to kazahkstan, which has been helping russia bypass sanctions on electrical components, and this is where theyre processing them and equpping older tanks. 3. Kazakhstan is sending vehicles to russia ans this is their entry point(although nato would likely call them out on this.) 4. A combination of all of the above

Decades of corruption, bad storage and illegal sales have lost hundreds of tanks. Then most of the former tank factories are derelict. In the 1990s we cut up dozens of russian tanks for spares for collectors in the West. We learnt that most of the storage yards arent gaurded and the tanks were getting cannabalised for scarp, / vodka. Some yards never got beyond muddy field status and some "yards" just sent everything to scrap with maybe a half dozen fronting the entrance to the field for show / hold the sign up!

Well, Ukraine is more corrupt than DRC

They're losing 2-3 tanks a day but no one mentions how they're losing many more from damages. They're experiencing a shortage of both spare parts and qualified mechanics so many of these tanks take months even years to return to the battlefield. Thats why they're using Desert Crosses. Tanks dont magically come back after taking damage. Its not 2-3 years but way less than that.

I think, one of the reasons why we see this base grow, that most likely most "easy-to-refurbish" tanks have been restored and shipped to active duty, and majority of remaining tanks require complex repairs that hard to performed in storage facilities with available resources - skilled workforce/equipment/parts. In situation when Ruzzia runs low on skills/equipment/parts It is easy to run single super-repair center, rather shuffle resource between multiples repair facilities.

Russia went from producing 400 tanks a year to now 1200 tanks a year and are sending 100 new t90’s to the front every month. They can’t get French optics anymore so they use slightly less advanced local optics but since there is very few tank battles in this war there is no real need for advanced optics that are over engineered and fail on the regular. There is much more to Russia than just the Ukraine front. They are preparing two new armies for posting in the northwest now that Finland has joined NATO so there will be a lot of armor allocated there. All the other areas of the country need to be kept stocked up as well. As far as the sheds, I would think any tanks in the garage were driven into them and they may not be modified to the latest standards . Of course that does not help anyone know if there are tanks in the garages in the first place either.

When the SMO started there were rumors of Russia needing to use T-62/64 and even T-54/55 tanks. I heard from a friend in the Donbass that these old tanks were placed at road intersections behind the lines and manned by "older" soldiers familiar with them. A 100 millimeter cannon would do wonders to a pickup truck speeding through to do hit-and-run attacks on logistics hubs.

It's probably 2.5 years only if they stop building tanks at all. They can also increase the build rate in the future. Overall this war is only making Russia stronger. They have become incompetent after the fall of the Soviet Union, but they are changing, this war is making them more competent. Stalin and his generals were also incompetent at the start of WW2... at the end of the war Soviet Union had the strongest ground army ever.

To be clear, when he says they have 3 years left before "running out of tanks" doesn't mean Russia would have no tanks anymore, it means they'd have no tanks to *spare* for the war without weakening their forces committed to guarding the country. Russia has many tanks in storage that could be refurbished and put back into the fight, BUT it's debatable they'll have the resources to do some in 3 years time because of sanctions.

The Russians never intended to take Kiev, this statement was made by the American General Milley, the plan was to gather troops and force them to sign a peace treaty, in return the Russians would withdraw their troops and this was successful in Turkey, after which Prime Minister Boris Johnson came to Ukraine and banned this document. this has been confirmed many times by both the Turkish and Israeli sides.

Seeing in what condition most of Russian bases are I doubt there is any meaningful underground storage facilities for military equipment, especially tanks.
@josephshreeves8192
@josephshreeves8192 2 месяца назад
Its a very good point, but its basically a giant grey zone where people usually just don't know. Doubly so for large and secretive countries. And due to the expense, underground storage is typically for CBRN, specialised factories, and C2C. Storage for standard military equipment is usually above ground for conventional militaries. North Korea is a notable exception though, in particular with their artillery
