I love 9 ball pool, but in competition it's so easy to just watch one player dominate the whole thing whilst the other just sits there. I love both games but in snooker there is often more tactical battles between the players, which I think makes it better as a spectator sport. Really enjoyed this tournament though.
@Piterixos

Yep, snooker is definitely a better game in every way. The only thing pool has going for it is the fact the table is smaller so it's more accessible. The fact the winner of one rack starts the next one and can continue after potting any ball is just stupid.

Trump didn’t “just sit there”, he blew the easy out in game 1. If you don’t run out wide open racks when you get the chance in pool, you’re gonna get steamrolled.

So.... Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump don't do this very thing to people all the time in Snooker? I'm not saying there isn't a bit more back in forth in Snooker..... But don't act as though players don't sit on the sidelines and watch for entire breaks and matches.
@Arrica101

Running an entire frame in snooker is virtually impossible. The opponent always has at least 1 chance usually off the break. Clearly that is not the case in 9 ball when it could very easily happen that your opponent doesn't even take a single shot the entire match

For people wondering who's better pool players or snooker players - consider this: the best snooker players are competitive with the best 9-ball and 8-ball players in the world with a little training. They can do a pick-up match any day after an hour or two of practicing and be genuinely competitive. The best 8 and 9 ball players don't stand a chance in snooker - that's why they're never in snooker exhibition matches. They'd have to train for years and still might not crack the top 100.

All these people talking smack about pool players not being able to play snooker at a high level. When I was studying in London, me and my mates had the fortune to witness the American Pool Team practice for the Mosconi Cup in Hurricane Room. One of my mates even got into a money match with Jayson Shaw in snooker and he was making 80-90 breaks no sweat all night. With a bit of practice, these pool players could be really competitive in snooker if they wanted to. They just choose not too with the restrictive uniform, long drawn out gameplay of snooker, and the long qualification process it takes to even join the World Snooker Tour and main professional tournaments that get broadcasted (do some reading on the Q School qualification) and many other factors. Also English pool and American pool are very different. They have different pocket shapes making some shots the optimal one in american pool but completely unplayable in english pool. The two shot rule in English pool rather than the free ball gives rises to so many different strategies and gameplay. Just because someone has played English Pool and snooker growing up doesnt make them automatically good in American Pool. Just appreciate the beauty of pool and snooker as different forms of cue sports. Snooker is meant to be a gentleman's sport and y'all really aren't giving snooker followers and fans a good name by bashing pool players for no good reason. What do you even gain by bashing down pool and claiming snooker is superior? Its just shameful behavior. I love snooker and I think Judd Trump and Ronnie the Rocket are just geniuses out of this world in Snooker, but likewise Efren is just magical in Pool and the brilliance of Shane van Boening and Joshua Filler brings a different side of cuesports that is just mesmerizing to watch as well.

How does entry work for competitions like this though? The pool lot would have to commit a year or two of their life to Q school and then try to qualify for everything. It would cost a fortune for very little reward because they’d be unlikely to progress far in any tournament even if they managed to qualify. I’d like to see some attempt it but it wouldn’t be as easy as hopping on a flight and playing a bit of snooker.

Just like to add some perspective as a snooker player switched to 9 ball many years ago. What I found was rarely mentioned which is that side spins in snooker curves every time in opposite direction due to the distance and we practice so much that we compensate without thinking about it. It’s kind of like the bowling ball curves. When I first played on pool table with larger and heavier balls, the curve isn’t as much and side spin kick action is different. I was missing all those shots Judd is missing. In 9 ball I literally relearned to curve and kick with much slower speed, the cloth doesn’t reverse the curve and fast shots don’t react much, so all that instinctive compensation in snooker actually was too much adjustment and shots are missed. It was very frustrating. Today I play in 9 ball with much less power, leaving more angles to run around the table rather than using power and spins as I do in snooker. Not sure if I explain this clearly or if anyone else experienced the same. Great games both snooker and 9 ball. :)
@hpe-eo4ce
@hpe-eo4ce 2 года назад
I know exactly what you are talking about. I learned to play snooker first as a kid but later got into 9 ball as a 20 something, and now I've gone back to mostly playing snooker but I still play 9 ball from time to time. Sidespin is completely different because the balls have different masses and different angular moments of inertia (angular moment of inertia is a physics term describing how much force is required to spin a round object about its axis). So the bigger pool balls have a larger moment of inertia so it's more difficult to make it change direction as a result of spin. That's why you have to play the cue ball slower to make it swerve the same amount in pool compared to snooker: the frictional force exerted by the cloth that makes it swerve is small compared to the inertia of the ball. That's in addition to the fact that pool cloth is much smoother than the nappy snooker cloth. There's also the fact that larger balls have more surface area contact with each other. So in snooker compared to pool, with the same amount of left spin and at the same speed, you get less right spin throw on the object ball after contact because the balls are smaller and there's less surface area contact. So for that reason snooker requires a little bit longer of a backswing, more follow through and smoother acceleration of the cue on most shots because you need more spin on the cue ball to get the same throw on the object ball. I've found that keeping my backswing in pool much more compact helps tremendously with cue ball control on fast tables. I have to really extend my backswing quite a bit more in snooker on traditional cloth. It's worth pointing out here that this trend in snooker is changing towards becoming more compact with players like Kyren Wilson because the professional table cloth is much faster than it used to be.

One thing not mentioned much here, and that is the different pocket geometry. In snooker the cushions are rounded into the pockets, but in pool they make a sharp angle. It means that in pool you can pocket by aiming deliberately at the cushion on the other side of the pocket and it will ricochet in. In snooker aiming directly at the cushion next to the pocket will just not work. It means that a snooker player will not notice some pocketable balls that a pool player will immediately go for.

@@rickswords6346 Yes, potting is easier on the smaller table, but because the cushion angle at the pockets is different It means that a snooker player will not notice some pocketable balls that a pool player will immediately go for. So many people are arguing about which is the more skilful sport. This doesn’t really make sense. The argument is about which are more skilful players... Simple sports require higher degree of accuracy and completion, harder sports are more forgiving. Yes snooker is more difficult, but this doesn’t make their players automatically more skilled. That’s like saying it’s harder to score in soccer than basketball, so soccer players are more skilled. Sure, basketball is way easier, but unless Messi is putting out double doubles of goals and assists this doesn’t mean anything. It’s easier to score in basketball, but if you do so as a team 5 times a game you are trash. Either game, the difficulty is scoring more than your opponents, and they find it just as difficult as you, so despite soccer being objectively harder, it is subjectivity equally difficult to play. Regardless of how difficult or easy the skills in a game are, being better at performing them than the other professionals is the measure of skill. Snooker fans always go on about how the small table makes it easier to pot balls so it should be easier for a snooker player to pot out in 9 ball. It is… and it’s easier for your opponent who is a nine ball player as well. So on an open table people pot out more often… how did this make the game easier, if the object is to be better than your opponent who has the same advantages and disadvantages. Yes many of the skills required for snooker are inherently more impressive because they are more difficult to master from scratch, but some of the unique 9ball skills like jumps and power breaks are impressive too, and transitioning is incredible, even though the sports are similar. Kudos to the greats who have transcended more than one discipline or even attempted it. Davis, Ronnie, Earl, Efron, Selby, now Trump. Trump is the more skilled individual here, no question (although he had a bad day) but probably not better at 9ball. Meanwhile the best 9ball player probably COULD compete against the 100th best snooker player with a little preparation. At the end of the day the sports are different enough that you back the person on their home turf, and similar enough that the best of the best are competitors regardless. But arguing about if the top snooker players are more skilled than the top 9ball players is as pointless as arguing if the earth is rounder than Pluto is cold.

Although your football and basketball argument is clever, it’s not taking into account how dissimilar those two sports are and how like each other these two sports are

Pool is a lot more about have an arsenal of shot types to 'escape' situations. The skill is when to use what 'trick'. that's the inexperience that shows in the snooker players. I think what us Brits don't explain well is that Snooker is more about control of your body and mind in tandem (every shot is a ritual, you don't just get down and you don't just lift your head - the whole thing is an art form and the match length is a measure of consistency at that art form). With such a huge table in snooker and tight pockets the ability to keep the control is something you have to be devoted to and few can master it. With Pool there's a different skill required, but I think a Snooker player with a years focus on pool would be lethal, but a pool player with a years focus on snooker would still be a 1 in a 1000 chance of getting anywhere - the fundamentals are such a big part of it and once you're an adult it's too late to master the fundamentals.
@michaelcake3186
@michaelcake3186 2 года назад
I disagree, you can't say that a master chess player can be the best poker player if he spends time playing poker.. snooker and 9ball are two totally different games. Also, for any sport that has a pre-shot routine that routine is a ritual. Theres no comparison, stance, grip, pace, eyesight are all different, yeah 9ball doesn't have the prestige of snooker and its marketed a bit hilly billy but its super hard. To add to the differences of the game, just imagine that in 9ball the opponent might not have a single opportunity for a whole set. So what you say about getting out of tough spots is much closer to snooker, 9ball is a very very aggressive game. A 9ball player wants that opponent to stay sitted the whole set, in snooker that simply cant happen.. different games, bot immensely difficult to master! No reason to compare, just enjoy these 2 giants :)
@Eddy0042
@Eddy0042 2 года назад
@@michaelcake3186 Thanks Michael. I find your point interesting. I don't agree with it but that's what makes the world go round eh? I'm not saying one is better than the other, my comment is more to explain why snooker players feel there's a disparity. Truth is there is. I simply think a snooker player (e.g. Trump or O'Sullivan) could be a force in pool given enough experience, whereas the fundamentals required for a pool player to do the same in snooker make it very unlikely. Snooker is so demanding, physically and mentally that you need to live it from a very young age. I agree that pool is also very challenging, in a totally different way. I like pool, wish I was better at it. But 2hrs on the snooker table and I can often clean up on the pool table - It's like shooting at buckets after snooker.

They’re a different set of mechanics… billiards, Russian pyramid, snooker, pool they all have different set of fundamentals that emphasize certain aspects of the game…
@Eddy0042
@Eddy0042 2 года назад
@@0Caracalla That's an interesting thing. I actually think the fundamentals of billiards carry into snooker (billiards is very hard for a pure snooker player, but billiards players are generally great snooker players), and the fundamentals of snooker carry into pool. But jump shots and massive breaks don't really help in snooker, in fact jumping is a foul shot in snooker and seen as cheating. Its not entirely a one way street but I think this is why snooker fans get upset, it's because snooker is so much more disciplined. It's not to take away from pool, it's a great game. I still struggle to understand a pro game though where you could break off, clean up and win the match without the other player getting a shot. That's weird... not really a match is it? But hey I'm a Brit we frown at not requiring dress shoes in snooker.
@longvu59
@longvu59 2 года назад
your point is invalid. Michael's understanding of the game is pretty accurate. what is invalid about your point is that it will hardly ever come true, if a snooker player wants to lose his grip of his snooker game, maybe he'll get somewhere in pool, and if you think that take a year then think again. another aspect of pool that is crucial at the very top level is the mind game, and the mind game in snooker and pool are just two different worlds. these elite pool players have been playing the game at the very top level for years and years, you think someone with only a minor part of the fundamentals can achieve that in 1 year? cut me the crap mate, I've heard this snooker/pool comparison countless of times and grown tired of it. they are different games, have different constraints and require different skills. just accept the fact and enjoy

@@Isuc_at_poolgolf Probably because winner breaks is an advantage full stop, but it is more so to a full time pool player than a full time snooker player trying his hand at pool at this level for the first time. Jayson was still the obvious favourite here, just as Judd would be if they were playing snooker.

@@seanscanlon9067 Yeah that’s my point If Jayson can run all his way out but Judd can’t, it just simply means that Jayson is better at pool than Judd. Winner break is fair in long races in my opinion, since running out plenty of racks isn’t easy at all.

Is this a usual procedure to have this loud rock music in the background while the pros carrying out their matches? The music is not in the commentators room, is it? Is that a specialty in the US Open?

It helps the players not get distracted by the sounds from the crowds making noises and at the different tables. They don't play music during the semis and finals when only one table is used.

@@shardanette1 Thx for you answer! Truly, I don't appreciate those conditions. I'd put plugs into my ears ... pity.

Watching Jayson play Trump after hearing him commentate for the Trump vs Patel match is dope.
