The classic song from the 1860s performed by Mark McNeil in a video presentation. See The Hamilton Spectator “Flashbacks” column at bit.ly/39nW0Xo to learn more about the sad story behind the song.
When You and I Were Young, Maggie
I wandered today to the hills, Maggie
To watch the scene below
The creek and the rusty old mill, Maggie
Where we used to go long ago.
The green grove is gone from the hill, Maggie
Where first the daisies sprung
The old rusty mill is still, Maggie
Since you and I were young.
A city so silent and lone, Maggie
Where the young and the gay and the best
In polished white mansion of stone, Maggie
Have each found a place of rest
Is built where the birds used to play, Maggie
And join the songs that were sung
For we sang just as gay as they, Maggie
When you and I were young.
They say I am feeble with age, Maggie
My steps are less sprightly than then
My face is a well written page, Maggie
But time alone was the pen.
They say we are aged and grey, Maggie
As spray by the white breakers flung
But to me you're as fair as you were, Maggie
When you and I were young.
And now we are aged and grey, Maggie
The trials of life nearly done
Let us sing of the days that are gone, Maggie
When you and I were young.
Lyric by George Washington Johnson

I sang this to my wife at our 40th wedding anniversary. One of my daughters in law played keyboard with 2 granddaughters on the flute for accompaniment. It was the last of our anniversaries that we celebrated as she passed away from cancer just over 2 years later.

I am still young, but this makes me cry. So many generations have come and gone. I wish I could have known them. I don't want to lose my friends, who are all growing so old. Thank God for the salvation he has given my friends and I. I can only wait till we all get to live forever in heaven. How sweet that will be.

Very nice archival photos to accompany your storytelling. You've added a lilting feel to the song which, all too often, is sung as a dirge. Very nice my friend. You've captured Johnson's thoughts.

Yes! Refreshing and unique interpretation! Have always wondered if I'd ever hear this song again, since a friend of my Dad's who used to sing and play it passed away. Was too young then to ask him who had written it. Thank you so much! :^)

After reading lyrics... I then enjoyed the song, heard it twice but not until reading lyrics, I understood ! 😂 As age gets more acute with the dropping of more hairs off my head, I'm beginning to feel the wrinkles and calluses on my body. ARGH ! Quoting SONNY TROCKMORTON "I wish I was 18" 😂

and in actual fact, there is an historic plaque that states the following, placed by the Ontario Historical Board near Binbrook, Ontario, Canada. "This is the childhood home of Maggie Clark, subject of the famous ballad "When You and I Were Young". Its author, George Washington Johnson (1839-1917), wrote the poem shortly before his marriage to Maggie in 1864. Published in his volume of verse entitled "Maple Leaves", it was set to music as "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" by J.A. Butterfield, in 1866. It is believed that the mill referred to in this ballad was situated about 1.6 km north of here on the bank of Twenty Mile Creek. Johnson was born in Binbrook Township and taught at Glanford school where Maggie was one of his pupils."
