I appreciate that the passive agresive roommate has been made more extreme, petty, overreacting passive agressive and hopefully a more cartoonish represenatation of people who are passive agressive as a survival mechanism. Of course the moral of the story shouldn't be "let's stoop to thier level" but I guess whatever fires up the masses.

I know this is humorous and enjoyed it. That said, here are some actual tips from my roommate experiences. 1) Do clean up after yourself; it shows respect for others who live with you as well as for yourself, and it will improve the sanitation of the place and mental health of everyone there. If you occasionally don’t have time to clean up right away, just communicate that and get to it later, and don’t abuse the exception by making it the norm. It’ll make it difficult for others to get along with you if they often have to clean up your mess in order to use the facilities. 2) It can help to address things head on in a kind and respectful way; in one apartment the 6 of us met briefly each month to discuss what we liked about each other and to make requests. Just having that communication helped to reduce feelings of annoyance and provided a structured place to express desires for change so it wasn’t an attack. 3) If someone is passive aggressive to you, it helps to address it face on and kindly, understanding that they’re coming from some some kind of misery or hidden injury that probably has nothing to do with you or the situation. Recognize that, and recognize ways that you might be able to improve, but also be firm in setting your boundaries because you still don’t deserve to be treated poorly. I had to do that once with a roommate who was old enough to be my mom, so out of respect, I initially shouldered her passive aggressiveness, until it finally turned into outright aggression. I took a day to cool off, and on my way home in the evening stopped to write her a kind but firm note recognizing the trials I could see that she was experiencing, apologizing for not having been more supportive, and explaining that I would not tolerate being treated that way and what she’d demanded of me was not something I could reasonably provide. I kindly explained how I expected her to interact with me, finished the note on a positive and gave her some earplugs as a middle ground (one thing she’d complained about was noise), and after that she was nice to me. (She remained aggressive toward others, though, so when her contract expired and she wanted to renew, the landlady refused.) Being passive aggressive gives people a false sense of power and control, but neither they nor those they direct it toward are improved by it and left as is the situation would probably deteriorate. By addressing the issues with clear, direct, healthy communication (like “I feel” statements), together you actually take control of the situation and make it better for everyone. Let’s make healthy communication the norm.

My nightmare roommate story is me cleaning on Sunday and forgetting the duster in the living room and she waited until Sunday before letting me know, in order: she left the duster there on purpose, there was a smidge of tomato on the kitchen backsplash after I cooked and I left a mug with leftover coffee in the sink for a day (namely from 8:30am until 8pm when I got back home). I offered to use her bananas for a banana bread instead of throwing them away and she threw them away.

Nah that laundry one hit hard. My old roommate ripped my laundry out of the washer when she needed it and rather than throwing it in the EMPTY dryer and running it, she threw my clothes on the floor. So as soon as hers was done, I threw her wet clothes on the floor and put mine back in to run again. I sat in the room until mine were done in both machines and she still hadn't come down to switch hers. Her clothes ended up on the floor for almost 24 hours before she came yelling at me for ruining her clothes... as if she didn't do it first

Had to explain to a roommate that you cannot wash a pot that is too hot to touch (in the plastic sink, no less) and I would come back in 20 minutes when I had finished eating and it was safe to wash it. Nope, not good enough. But then again, she had many issues with reality not going her way, and this is just the tip of a very immature iceberg
